Why? After finishing Dungy's job in his first season in Tampa Bay[SIZE=14.2857141494751px], with a team he had very little to do with constructing, [/SIZE]he went 45-51 over the next 6 seasons while going 0-2 in the playoffs.

He may be the next **** Vermeil but that is asking a lot.

Certainly but that is a long time ago, when he wasn't setting the table, and the track record on his own, or at least with far more authority then in Oakland, is pretty average.

Cowher, I hear ya. When he said he's done, I believed him. But Gruden is still young and he seems far too competitive to be satisfied sitting in a TV booth for the rest of his life. Whether it's Oakland or some other team, I'd be shocked if he doesn't come back.

Eh, Madden was pretty young by head coaching standards when he hung it up, and he never returned.

In any case, one of the reasons for Gruden's downfall in TB was that he insisted on playing mediocre veterans over young talent. Is that really the approach the Raiders need?

Absolutely!

It helps teams get higher picks because they usually lose the rest of their games. So at least Oakland will have the #1 pick.

But for real, firing Allen and not McKenzie is bat-crap crazy. McKenzie let their only two franchise players go in free agency when they had $60M in cap space to use. And he's had atrocious drafts. Pretty unreal. Laughingstock of the league right now.

I'm sure Allen will catch on pretty quickly as an assistant coach or coordinator.

I think Reggie needs to go as well, but to say his drafts have been atrocious is just ignorant. Sio, Mack, Carr and Gabe Jackson are all solid picks. The jury is still out on Hayden, and I think McGill could contribute. Quite frankly I would trust Reggie over Al to make the correct picks.

Reggie has to go because his body of work as a whole is absolutely atrocious. He looks like he got a couple picks right this year, but there is also Hayden (when really good DTs were on the board) Watson and Wilson, etc. This team needed players not projects like Hayden and Watson. He traded Palmer and traded for Flynn and Schaub in back to back years. He burned the place down for two years to bring in the likes of Tuck and Woodley. I'm sorry, but being able to cut everyone he signed this year to start over again without cap ramifications is not the great thing a lot of people make it out to be. Yeah he signed a bunch of guys that are past their prime and suck, but hey we can just get rid of them and do the same thing next year. He fired Hue and replaced him with Allen who brought in Knapp and Olsen after him. I still want an explanation as to how in the hell Knapp was ever allowed to be on the Raider sideline again. I really can not see even the slightest case for Reggie staying.

Darrell Bevell, Seattle offensive coordinator: He will be a hot name, but may get better offers.

Jack Del Rio, Denver defensive coordinator: The Bay Area native has head coaching experience and is doing well in Denver.

Vic Fangio, San Francisco defensive coordinator: Understated 49ers coach gets the most of his players and he is a stable force.

Adam Gase, Denver offensive coordinator: See Bevell.

Jon Gruden, former Oakland and Tampa Bay head coach/ESPN analyst: Top choice of the team and the fan base. But it would take a lot of stars to align for this to happen.

Name not listed there is Jim Harbaugh. If he and SF part ways, I am sure he would be in the mix, although I wonder about a successful team that doesn't like their coach.

Jim Harbaugh is on that list. He is about the 7th name down the list.

 
Jim Trotter saying it's Sparano. Glad that Mark seems to be letting Reggie run stuff.

I would be shocked by the Gruden thing, but really, who knows? I am guessing it comes down to his relationship with Mark, and his desire to leave broadcasting.

Pat Schurmur: Has previous head coaching experience, from the WC offensive system and well verse in Chip Kelly's spread offense.

Hue Jackson: Previous success as the Raiders HC, appears to be developing Dalton and having strong success in Cincy.

IMO, bringing back Hue would not really give us the fresh start we need. Outside of Gruden and Madden, I think we need to look forward from the past, and not relive it with the same staff.

I like bringing on someone from a division rival like Gase or Del Rio (who has HC experience though not exactly successful experience), and Reich is a good mention given the development factor he can have for Carr (or any other QB we bring in via the draft next year). Other potential candidate in this vein may be Dave Toub (KC ST coordinator -- John Harbaugh proved an ST coordinator can jump in and coach).

What about Ray Horton? He built solid D's right away in Arizona and Cleveland before joining TEN this year. Todd Bowles (DC in ARI)? He has experience working with Sparano.

As far as college coaches, how about Kevin Sumlin out of TX A&M? Bob Stoops in Oklahoma or Bo Pelini from Nebraska?

Flores was on Sirius with Kirwin today and both of them laughed at the idea of Gruden returning to Oakland. They also added that no high profile coach would even talk to the Raiders at this point given the franchise's condition: run down stadium, very little talent and no franchise QB. As I said previously, people need to get over the idea of Gruden returning.

FYI, Hue could leave the Bengals at the end of the season if offered the HC position with no compensation required.

 
While it may be harder to recruit blue chip free agents and draftees that pull an Eli, I don't believe that the Raiders sucking so bad is going to detract too badly from recruiting a HC.

There are only 32 HC jobs so scarcity makes it a valuable commodity no matter how bad the team is. And the team is so horrendous that any minor uptick in performance can be perceived as a huge turnaround that a HC can parlay into more money or opportunity elsewhere. Wouldn't former HCs who are coordinators or position coaches under some other HC want to be back in teh driver's seat regardless of team situation?

I don't think the only guys who will take the job are those vested in the poise and pride of the franchise -- though bringing in Madden, Tim Brown, Howie Long, Art Shell, Daqve Caspar, Van Eeghan, Lamonica, Gannon, and whoever else is still alive to help kick this team back to its commitment to excellence would be great.

 
I liked what Sparano was saying. Sounds like it won't be status quo in Oakland. Sounds like he is going to look at schemes etc... He said something to the effect that it wouldn't make sense to keep on doing what wasn't working. Things need changing.

Sparano mentions something about forgetting how to win. I always felt that DA teams were never coached to expect to win or step on other teams throats. Very passive hoping to just compete and steal a game from the enemy. The polar opposite of Hue Jackson's bully campaign. At least we had an identity back then. At least victory never took us by surprise. Look how far we have fallen under Dennis Allen. Let his name be stricken from the record, never spoken, never mentioned, no memory worth preserving. So let it be written...so let it be done.

 
LOL. I am pretty much resigned to the fact that the Raiders are gonna suck until Tommy boy divests himself of the team.

The only intrigue left is whether the team can secure the overall #1 pick. They will prolly screen that up too. :cry:

 
2 QB league with no starters on waiver wire. Mark Sanchez currently my QB4 and have 2 QBs on week 9 bye. So some value to any starter for a couple weeks..

Try the new starting QB up in Buffalo. Or monitor who is starting in STL or ARZ. If last resort, have McGloin/Schaub on speed dial. And remember they are in bye this week.

 
Orton, Manuel, Palmer, Stanton, Hill, Davis, Carr all owned. Schaub and McGloin available. That's why I'm trying to figure out who would be worth the pickup. Don't need anyone right away, so sort of leaning Schaub.

Anyway, back to calculating all of the available Raiders' salary cap room . . .

Schaub has been away from the Raiders for awhile now, tending to his wife who just gave birth to a 6 month preemie baby. Who knows his time table for return?

Shanahan. Al Davis is dead. If the franchise apologized to Shanahan for ripping him off of a quarter of a million, and for lacking patience with him, he might return, but they would probably have to tolerate him pissing on Davis' grave each day.

This works because Shanahan is a genius, and because nobody will employ him and nobody will agree to coach that mess. They need each other.
