2014 Oakland Raiders Regular Season Thread (2 Viewers)

To be fair Gruden would be better then a bunch of other retreads like Holmgren, Martz or their current head coach. Who knows? Maybe he could go all Vermeil and tear it up.

And despite the dysfunction you have to imagine that a new HC, if given the appropriate control (at least to get his guy in the GM spot) would love the idea of $90 mil in cap space to play with. That's gotta be some kind of draw, doesn't it?

I think as long as there was a respected GM or the coach could bring in his own personnel guy (obviously very few head coaches should be afforded this opportunity) this could be an attractive job. If Reggie remains GM I think it limits the potential coaching candidates significantly. Besides Reggie's horrible personnel moves any coach knows Reggie is on thin ice and if he goes the coach could be next.

from 2 years ago............

something isn't right in oakland. and it's more than just the roster. the wiznewski departure tells me that something just aint right. why would a man choose unemployment over a cush job where he would get to be with his son and attempt to create a bad ### legacy? the knapp hire. seriously, wtf? and finally, the apparent, lack of focus, #### it attitude. the coaches appear to have lost the team. the team seemed into the game when i at KC. our seats were 10 feet from the bench. it was great watching the guys that close. they were into it and seemed to be having fun. wtf happened in the last few weeks? all of these things point to the top. allen, mackenzie and possibly mark davis. if they don't can knapp, we're in for some dark dark days imho.
Last week Kirwin as well Brandt said the Raiders' starting QB for 2013 is not on their current roster. I believe it. i think Reggie is gonna get it turned around. It is just going take a couple of years.
I don't. The knapp hire. Probably the Allen hire. The wiz departure. opening the Season paper thin at wr and db. None of these things speak to great leadership. Give it time give it time........ I'm tired of that ####. Ive given it time Ever since the superbowl the raiders have been an absolute joke and I'm sick of it. Al's dead. So there's no excuse anymore.

Lots of valid posts.

 1. As far as Gannon throwing up 5 INTs in the super bowl, I would give my eye teeth just to be in the playoff hunt rather than the joke of the league.
 2. Reggie's biggest mistake was bringing in quality character guys way past their prime. The next GM should target impact players going into their second contract. Suh and Justin Houston are examples. Sure they will have to overpay, but that is the price of a decade + of ineptitude. Winning will cure alot of ills and bringing in quality players = wins.
 3. Tommy boy's biggest crimes are 1) Not having a pulse on qualified coaches and GMs. He had to seek out external sources to recommend candidates for GM; 2) Not having the financial resources to get a new stadium built. I recall the Giants having the same issues in the late 70's/early 80's and needing the league to step and help. Ideally Davis would realize his short comings and sell out to someone with deep pockets [Larry Ellison, you there?]

At this point Davis will settle for a new stadium anywhere. The current stadium is a pig stye. I have heard that on occasion the sewage even gets backed up and overflows. Do not know how true it is, but it perfectly captures the stadium conditions.

But only into the visitor's lockerroom, so that's a feature

So now the cries will be to get a defensive coach. That's what Allen's specialty was. And Jacksonville hired Gus Bradley last year; a defensive specialist. They are on pace to have the worst defense in NFL HISTORY. This is an offensive league. You need to outscore people... Seattle's performance last season was an outlier.

Al Davis was so ahead of the league in that regard. Always hired offensive minded head coaches and he basically ran the defense and special teams through his puppet coaches. He knew the deal about scoring points. Hiring defensive HC's is a sucker move. Good luck Tampa!

I would settle for Commitment to Mediocrity at this point.
I wonder if Gannon reads this board. :oldunsure: The very next morning, he uses this exact phrase.

The sad part is, we'd have to make enormous strides to reach the "mediocre" stage.
I thought you were Rich Gannon, RN :)

Side note - as a Bengals fan I don't expect compensation from the Raiders for him, I just expect more sweet deals like the Palmer trade :D

History says this is not true. OVer and over again, history says this is not true.

FYI, Madden was a LB coach before being named head coach. I believe Parcells was initial a defensive OC and as much as Davis tried Parcells new better than to take the Raider HC job. I just don't think it is as easy as hiring an offensive coach and all your worries are gone. First and foremost is the HC has to be a leader and motivator, not just a coach.

Do we really have to revisit Al's hires over the end of his life? Callahan, White, Bugel, Turner, Kiffin, Cable, Jackson. Cable and Jackson seemed to have the team on the right track. But he had a hell of a lot more misses than hits.

I can attest to this. Last game I went to I peed in a mop bucket in the corner because the trough was backed up. Hate to admit it, but it true.

I agree with RN, the NFL is set up to score points, so an offensive minded HC makes sense.

I also just generally feel like offensive HCs are playing with their little offensive chess pieces, and are more likely to let a strong DC call his own game. Defensive minded guys I feel get more conservative, and are more likely to interfere with the offensive staff.

This is JMO, I have nothing to back this up, just a feeling.

What the Raiders are doing is the right way to build a team. Turning a team like that around is not going to happen overnight.

This is actually a great call, would love to see it happen.

When the Raiders brought in Allen I thought it was a bold and exciting move akin to when they brought in Gruden, many will deny it now but I know they agreed with me at the time. But that honeymoon ended when he settled on Knapp as his OC, a move that showed a lack of creativity or even a lack of will. When Knapp was #### canned the hope was rekindled for all of a cup of coffee before Olsen was brought in. Just terrible moves and clear indicators that the hope for success was over.

IMO the Raiders need to shoot for another Gruden, not the husk of the coach that Gruden was 12 years ago, and hasn't been since. Today's Gruden has grown soft on the fat of the booth and the mail-it-in three day work week and six month offseason. They need to go get a Chip Kelly or Mike McCoy type who can bring some energy and creativity to the team and not saddle the team with coordinators with outdated schemes and messages.
Great post!

Agreed!

Is there a stage of grief where you start to feel optimism? :-)))

Maybe between all the negatives--Gannon's rant, national joke, fired coach-- and Sparano's coaching style they become competitive and finish .500. Reece certainly sounded fired up. (Pssst, coach you might want to start using him more.) Some wins don't sound too bad, does it? I know, I know, the nation wants the house cleaned. For me, I want a competitive product. Counting on production from high draft picks is a crap shoot---don't need to tell you guys. To paraphrase sweetness, "The future is promised to no one."

I want Ws!!!

I don't think they have the players. I expect them to be more competitive, but as far as wins I think 4 is top of the mark.

I'll settle on just being competitive.

Have faith buddy. I am a SF Giants fan and was convinced that I would never see them win a world series after the Angels series. Fast forward to 2010 they not only win one, they do it again in 2012!

It's sports, if you have the talent you gotta a shot.

Holmgren’s name quietly emerges as potential Raiders coach

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/10/05/holmgrens-name-quietly-emerges-as-potential-raiders-coach/

Back in July, former Packers and Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren sounded like a guy who’d be interested in coaching again at age 66. Mark Davis ultimately could be interested in Holmgren coaching the team Davis owns.

Strong and persistent chatter has emerged in recent days linking Holmgren to the job. It’s a fairly obvious connection, given that former Holmgren lieutenant Reggie McKenzie serves as the General Manager in Oakland. McKenzie, who could be the next guy out the door in Oakland, has said he’ll hire the next coach. If McKenzie does, Holmgren could be the optimal Hail Mary option, especially since Holmgren likely would not be inclined to replace McKenzie — unlike other big-name coaches Davis may pursue.

While unconfirmed, multiple sources tell PFT that Holmgren visited the team’s facility this week. Hardly a precursor to getting the job, it could be an indication that Holmgren is in the mix, if Davis ultimately can’t catch a coach who cachè born more recently than 1948.

Most recently, Holmgren worked as president of the Browns, serving as the surrogate owner for Randy Lerner, who had no desire to do the things most owners do.

For his career as a coach, Holmgren has a record of 161-111 in the regular season and 13-11 in the postseason. During his three years in Cleveland, the Browns were 14-34.

If we could land Harbaugh for two 3rd round picks I would be good with that. I just wouldn't want to give up our 2nd or 1st round pick because they will be high picks this year.

Not sure how I feel about Holmgren. On one hand he brings a fire, no BS approach the Raiders desperately need. I just wonder if he is well versed in the spread game (i.e. Chip Kelly approach), which I believe fits Carr's skill set perfectly.

whats his history regarding bell cow RB`s...or is he a RBBC type of guy?

Whats up with James Jones?
In my opinion he is by far the best WR on the team at this moment with Rod Streater being on IR to return. That being said Sparano wants to run the ball a lot so I don't think the passing game will be high volume that's for sure.
He's scored well......on my bench. Im just thinking maybe I should finally put him in. (not that people care)

Anyways, I haven't watched any raiders games and wasn't certain of how he's being used. WR1 for them?
