2014 Oakland Raiders Regular Season Thread (2 Viewers)

Hindsight is 20/20. Going into the 2012 draft Sheldon Richardson was just another name and Star Lotuleilei was surrounded by whispers of being lazy and having a heart condition. The DL I wanted was Sharrif Floyd and he hasn't done anything of note through 1.5 years.

Beyond all that, Hayden still has a chance of becoming an impact player. All we've seen of him is an (albeit crappy) injury shortened rookie season. Still too early to call him a bust IMO.

If Reggie is fired it should be for dumping Hue Jackson for Dennis Allen and Greg Olsen. Not for his drafts. 2012 was nothing but late picks. 2013 is incomplete (though Sio Moore looks good). And 2014 looks spectacular so far.
I agree with you as far as Reggie's draft picks are concerned. Its too early to grade out his drafts yet. But what about his free agent moves? Honestly, the only free agent pick ups that have been solid IMO have been Woodson and Carlos Rogers. And I'll give him Howard, I think he's an upgrade at guard. But everyone else has been garbage.
James Jones has been good.

I actually don't mind Reggie's FA strategy. Fact is no one worth spending real dollars on wants to come here. At least not yet. He's filling the roster with bodies on cap friendly deals while he builds through the draft. The FAs that work out, he either resigns or gets credit towards the compensatory pick process. The FAs that don't he cuts without cap hits.

It's painful to watch, but the roster is slowly turning over and we are in position to continue building and to make a competitive (even overpriced) offer when the right FA comes along. Until Reggie busts on a true big time FA signing, I won't hold him to the coals on his FA picks.

Ron Wolf and Ted Thompson signed two big time FAs over the years (Reggie White and Charles Woodson). Reggie is waiting for that kind of player to come to market, and until he does, he's building through the draft and setting us up nicely in terms of salary cap.

I can agree with that. And yes, the Raiders will have to over pay for quality players until the team starts to win. While the defense has been a big disappointment for the most part, I think the issues on that side of the ball can be resolved (or masked) with an upgrade at DE and DT. The one FA that may be available that the Raiders should over pay is Suh. Then upgrade DE in FA or the draft.

The bigger concern is the offense. The offense has scored over 20 points just once in the first 7 games. That is flat out pathetic. An impact RB and a true WR#1 will be big steps forward.

So has Donald Penn.

I pretty much agree. The Raiders should be targeting either the best WR or the best OT in the 2015 draft. With a strong OL and a legitimate passing threat it should be relatively easy to find a RB who will perform well...Mark Ingram anyone?

my optimism died about the time they canned hue. it went to the ER when norv olmos came aboard and had a massive failure when shell was rolled out there, and it had been on like support ever since that #### weasel kiffin was hired

new ownership, new stadium, new team and pRobably a new ciTy

I don't think Hue Jackson was the panacea some of you believe him to have been.

I like his demeanor but he was a gunslinger and more then a bit of a wild card when you put him behind the podium. I am not sure how long that kind of stuff plays favorably in the locker room, board room or with the media. He played fast and loose with draft picks and the salary cap too. I like Carson Palmer but a first and a second for a 32 year old version of him with questionable health and motivation? Come on.

I liked Cable better then Hue.

Can we move on from the belly aching around who Reggie 'should have signed'.... This isn't Madden '94 where there is no logic or other factors outside of simply adding a player to the roster. It's silly to hold a guy to the players he couldn't land. We have no idea what players a.) didn't fit the scheme, b.) refused to play for the Raiders, c.) refused to even take the call from the Raiders, d.) didn't want to move to the California area for fear it it falling into the ocean in the next earthquake, or e.) who knows!!

It's exactly the same as holding yourself at fault for not landing that amazing girl at the bar who wouldn't even look your way, and would never talk to you. Not that any of us have ever had to deal with that situation, just using it as an example.

/end rant

great analogy. I blame Reggie for turning the Raiders brand from BMOC to nerdy geek.

Yeah, they were pulling tons of talent prior to McKenzie.

Reggie has had some big misses and a few good picks (like many GM's). The veteran's he signed were all cap friendly with

no long term deals.... that's smart. I think the team has played better under Sparano but is still struggling on both sides of the ball.

At this point I would really like to see them showcase some of the rookies/new guys like Latvius Murray instead of continuing to

hand it off to MJD so we can really see what this kid has. Bryce Butler is another guy that we need to see more of.

Former Raider QB Rich Gannon's take on the primary issue with Oakland.

Charlie Casserly also chimes in.

Bottom line, lack of continuity creates a cycle but I think most people believe the Raiders had a good draft and found their QB to build around and Khalil Mack is getting rave reviews so he's a cornerstone to build on the defensive side of the ball.

Just need to keep building and keep a stable coaching staff so the players become familiar with offensive and defensive systems to stop that losing cycle.

Casserly said Reggie was put in an untenable position where he found himself in a salary cap hole and also lacked top draft picks but now has crawled out of that position.

You're fortunate to have found a QB so heading into next year's draft you may be a fantastic position of sitting on a prized QB prospect where you would have multiple offers to trade-down and pick up extra top draft picks in the 2015 draft and beyond.

Tough now but landing the QB could be a key to turn things around quickly now that you have Carr.

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2014/10/cleveland_browns_and_oakland_r.html

"... CBS Sports and Sirius XM NFL commentator Rich Gannon, who led the Raiders to their last playoff appearance in Super Bowl XXXVII. "Look at how many quarterbacks they've run through in both places. Look at the evaluation process. Look at how they've missed drafting players, signing free agency. When they get a good player they fire the coach so they don't properly develop players. That's no way to win."

Quarterback conundrums

The chain of Oakland quarterbacks since Gannon won league MVP honors in 2002 looks like it should belong in Jacob Marley's closet. The Raiders have had 18 start at least one game in that time – or one more than the Browns. Jason Campbell, Charlie Frye and Bruce Gradkowski own the dubious distinction of playing for both.

Lack of continuity almost always starts at the game's most important position and dramatically impacts the futures of franchise decision makers. Failing quarterbacks often get the men who coach and select them fired. New coaches and the men who select them usually contribute to the demise of the quarterbacks who got the previous regime fired.

Such is the cruel gridiron cycle.

"You draft a quarterback, he's there a year, and then you fire the coach and the coordinator," Gannon said. "The next group brings in an entirely different system and what happens to the young quarterback? We've seen it happen to guys like Sam Bradford and Alex Smith."

The Fresno State product has thrown eight touchdowns and five interceptions while suffering just four sacks. His quarterback rating (80.9) ranks near the league's bottom, but Gannon asks fans to look at the talent surrounding him.

"He's got a mediocre offensive line, not a lot of depth at receiver and they can't run the football," the analyst said. "But he's shown he can play fast and make all the throws. There's a lot to like about this kid."

The Raiders fired Dennis Allen after an 0-4 start. His replacement Tony Sparano is 0-2 with the toughest part of the schedule awaiting him. If the Raiders clean organizational house again in the offseason what will the new decision makers think of Carr?

Gannon believes the decision is an easy one.

"I think they've got their quarterback," he said. "They just have to build around him."

... The late Al Davis, whose renegade approach led the Raiders to three Super Bowl titles, lost his way and his patience with the organization. His methods became as outdated as the stadium his team inhabits. The Raiders spent themselves into salary-cap purgatory on the likes of Javon Walker, Larry Brown, Desmond Howard, DeAngelo Hall and Warren Sapp.

General manager Reggie McKenzie was hired in 2012 and charged with fixing the cap mess bereft of first- and second-round selections lost in the Carson Palmer trade.

"What Reggie inherited was an impossible situation," NFL Network analyst Charley Casserly, a former Redskins and Texans general manager. "He was buried under two years of cap problems. They were without top draft choices. It was going to take you two years to get to zero. You can't win in free agency when your team is not winning."

Casserly believes continuity leads to success. He points to the patience the Bengals showed in Marvin Lewis and Cowboys exhibited with Jason Garrett...

After years of poor drafting, the Raiders might finally have a promising class led by linebacker Khalil Mack, Carr and guard Gabe Jackson. But will McKenzie be given another year if the winless Raiders don't start producing?

If they get the #1and I was GM, I the would take Mariota. I would then try to repeat history and trade Carr to Arizona for a 2nd round pick ala Kevin Kolb.

The Jets are drafting at #3 and will definitely be looking for a QB. Trade with them and grab DE Leonard Williams plus pick up another pick

from Jets for the trade. Carr can play, we just need to have a defense that can actually put pressure on the QB and make some stops.

The Raiders need more than that and there are actually quite a few marquee defensive linemen who will potentially be available through free agency. I think they are best served with either the best OT or the best WR in the draft. If Carr is the future of this franchise then they need to invest in his success and safety.

Busted, you are waaaay better then this brother...come on now

RIP Mo...he gave alot to Raider Nation and our last good years. :(

So repeat of pre-season vs the seahags?
Not bloody likely we'll see 2 TDs in 15 seconds, see Latavius Murray looking decent, and the Hawks turn the ball over like they did. We are facing a great team that is desperate and have more to fight for to get back on track in their division, trying to leave the 49ers behind them as they chase the Cards.

Seattle won't be looking past the Raiders, they will be ensuring that every series they put points on the board and take advantage of the Raiders' weaknesses.

Sure, there is a hope that Carr has another solid day as he did back in August. The one thing is that as shaky as our O can look, they can manage to give Carr some time in the pocket to throw. I just think SEA's secondary is too good, and Carr not seasoned enough to go through all the progressions or misdirect the defense, as opposed to locking onto a primary target, maybe checking down once.

All I am hoping for is the Raiders to come out and be competitive in one of the toughest road venues in the NFL.

I can see us having a "what the hell" mentality, and just playing a nice loose game and making SEA work a little bit.

Of course, I'm probably dreaming, and the Seahawks will win by 30.

My forecast for today's game is that I'm thinking about picking up Turbin or (and?) Michael and starting them.

#Texans are growing frustrated with No. 1 pick Jadeveon Clowney, I’m told. May miss today with an illness. Previously missed weeks with knee

Ian Rapoport ‏@RapSheet 2h2 hours ago
#Texans know Jadeveon Clowney has never battled through a serious injury before. They want their rookie to grow up, be more mature.

“@Borsilli: Merrill Hoge: "Khalil Mack is not only the best rookie LB in the league, he is best LB in NFL right now"” >> hmmm ... #Raiders

#Raiders: Rookie linebacker Khalil Mack living up to the hypehttp://www.sfgate.com/raiders/articl...twitter-mobile … via @SFGate

I'm glad that Clowney was drafted before us which allowed us to land Mack.

If the draft order were based on today's standings,Jets/Tampa/Titans sit at picks 3-5. Potential is there for a nice haul, and wind up with Leonard Williams or Randy Gregory.

Week in and week out, year in and year out.... the DUMBEST football team to ever to walk the earth!

Make a hard hit, then LOOM over the receiver like a bad-ass WHEN WE ARE GETTING F--KING KILLED!!! 15 yards.

DUMMIES!!!

The moral victories are piling up now, fellas! I was proud of the effort today though.

Let's recap DJ hayden's day.

- Flat dropped a SURE pick-6.

- Flagged for taunting when we were down by 3 TDs.

- Dropped an INT with 4:00 left.

I guess it's a start.

I didn't watch the, but isn't his poor hands the reason he's a CB instead of a WR.

Should we be happy that he's in position to make those plays?

You are correct about his hands, but the difference between 0-16 and a winning record is making those kind of plays. And that can be said of the entire defense.

I was just happy he was on the damn field playing football.

Not bad for a guy who, you know, almost DIED of a heart condition in practice back in college.

(nope. I will not let go that the Raiders picked a guy who almost died. There had to be at least one or two other players available at that pick who didn't almost die at practice).

As much as it sux to watch them lose every week imagine being them.Losing is like a bad disease...i couldnt imagine what it feels like in that locker room every week ...ugh

It seems like the Raiders are playing teams a little tougher, a little better, though of course they're still losing. You Raider fans see actual improvement under Sparano?

Also what do you see pegged as the best chance for a first win this year?

KC at Oakland is my 1st choice.

STL is my 2nd choice.

Bills is my 3rd if Watkins doesn't show up for the game.

"Not this year" is my second-and-a-half choice, between the Rams and Bills, I guess.

Playing tougher? I guess. But, boy, that offense just can not get anything done in any manner at all, besides a single first down catch by our TE, and then it usually leads to a stall and a punt. SO frustrating. The defense doesn't stand a chance with that kind of offense. And the defense is nothing to write home about anyway.

I think Sparano has the team more competitive. They haven't been embarrassed since he took over. They just do not have the playmakers on offense, and a weak pass rush on defense. The shining bright spots are Mack and Moore. A stud at DT and a pass rush DE would do this defense wonders.

Well said Joey. At this point it looks like Carr peaked in the Charger game. I want to see him duplicate that game. To be fair the oline didn't do Carr any favors last week.
