2015 ACC Basketball - CLOSED (use 2016 thread now) (1 Viewer)

Nope, Duke wins and loses with integrity. I'll take the winless years with Ted Roof over a dirty program like cheating hill any day

State won by 30+.

Admittedly Jacksonville may be the absolute worst team in the country, but whatevs. ;)

I like our depth so far this year. I feel like everyone can contribute something good, and Gottfried is letting everyone get some good playing time. It will be interesting to see how the team performs against better competition. I would like to see a big improvement on free throws.

Pitt lost to Hawaii last night. Can't say I'm overly surprised. I didn't see the game, though. This just feels like an NIT year.

You could hear the Davidson crowd chanting "cheat cheat cheat" when the cheats were shooting free throws today :tebow:

Top 2 players from last year's team graduated. 3rd best is sitting with a broken foot. 4th best is suspended for the year. Lots of freshmen, inexperienced sophs and transfers seeing serious minutes. Clearly a team that isn't going to make waves early. March bubble discussion, here we come.

Anyone else stuck in the office today and planning to watch UNC-Butler at noon?
My office was empty and the snow was starting to stick, so I bailed.

Haven't watched a full UNC game yet, so I'm looking forward to it.
Let me know how they look- can barely make out ESPN2.
Apparently the picture is even worse than I thought, because I thought I just saw a UNC player make two free throws in a row.

UNC did a great job keying on Dunham, but other than that, UNC doesn't look great. They're giving up a ton of 2nd chances and not getting Paige many looks (Barlow is guarding him).

Butler just really isn't that good on offense if Dunham isn't getting shots. Jones is an awkward matchup but can't really shoot.

To me, UNC is playing too many guys. I know this is part of Roy's philosophy, but I just don't quite get it with this group. Just seems like it would make it hard for guys to get into a rhythm. Barring foul trouble or injury, I don't think Joel James should be playing. He's basically useless. I also think Berry is much better than Britt. I've never been a Britt fan and now he's switching shooting hands? That's bizarre. I guess Roy doesn't trust Berry yet and doesn't want to burden Paige with being the primary ball handler.

Britt is also an excellent defender. But I pretty much agree with this. They have enough solid big men that James doesn't need to be in the rotation, and I'd like to see more of Berry.

That and they're giving up a ton of good looks, Butler just isn't hitting them. More than anything they look potentially exploitable on defense.

Both of these are unusual for this year's team, at leas from what little we've seen so far. They're awful at shooting and always will be, but they've been making up for it on the board and defense. Hopefully that wasn't just the quality of opponent, because if they're merely decent on the boards and D they will lose a lot of games.

BTW this tournament is absurd. Butler is #57 in KenPom. That would put them in the top half of the ACC. Not sure how/why Roy scheduled his team into this November/December minefield.

Ah, there's the UNC team I know and love. Impressive interior defense and rebounding, unbelievably awful foul shooting and offensive execution.

That says more about the bottom half of the ACC than anything else though. A lot of sub-par teams this year.

57th is 57th, regardless of the quality of the ACC. A top ten team playing the #57 team in the first round of a holiday tournament is not normal.

Wow they are awful on offense. Absolutely incredible to have so many highly regarded recruits and only have one guy who can shoot beyond ten feet.

The cheats better learn how to make free throws and make baskets outside of the lane or their final four dreams aren't coming to fruition. Their size is impressive but their ability to shoot is not.

Tokotos shooting is hilarious
This is the team I remember from last year and assumed they would be this year. Two field goals in 11 minutes. Tons of trips to the line, most of them wasted (9 missed FTs this half).

You tell yourself that there's just no way a collection of well-regarded basketball players at the high major level can all be worse shooters than the average high school shooting guard, but here we are again.

That's surprising? That was their problem last year.

More than anything they just look slow. Tall and methodical (I keep waiting for Tokoto to make a quick move and he never does) with no great athletes to cover up any of that slowness. Butler seemingly can turn the corner at will and once that happens their defense just breaks down.

Not surprising, just amazing, considering their profiles. It's as if they combed through the Top 50 recruits the last three years and hand-picked the 3 worst shooters each year.

I guess it's possible that something goes wrong once they get there, but this isn't really an ongoing problem, just the last two seasons.

Paige can shoot  I don't understand what Tokoto's problem is though since he was supposedly a decent enough shooter in high school.

Yeah he's the exception.

I'm gonna have to remember how I enjoyed watching this last year, because I remember that I did. Maybe I just laughed a lot.

Clemson and FSU are bad. Really bad.

0-2 at home to start the challenge.
Bottom of the ACC (BC, Wake, FSU, Clemson, Va Tech) is atrocious this year. Should help the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th place teams though in their attempts to get bids.

It was a little depressing that this started with Rutgers-Celmson and Nebraska-FSU. Had the feel of tourney play-in games. Then it got worse watching Clemson and FSU play. Also mildly annoyed that UNC-UVa-Duke games will overlap a little Wednesday night.

And this concludes my brief - "in my day"/"get off my lawn" rant.

how did those teams get so bad?
I'm not sure about FSU since I thought they'd be better. I expected Wake, BC, and Va Tech to struggle some (though I thought Wake would be a touch better).

The one that gets me is Clemson. I thought they'd at least be middle of the road, but they're flat out terrible. I doubt Brownell survives if they continue like this.

On the positive side, Miami, State, and ND are better than I expected. I'm also mildly surprised UVa's been able to keep on going, but it's not like I thought they'd be bad, just not top 10. So it's not like it's been all bad, just that the bottom's been much worse than I was expecting.
