2015 ACC Basketball - CLOSED (use 2016 thread now) (1 Viewer)

Too little too late?

Not sure what other teams can claim two wins against top 10 teams though. One on the road nevertheless.
Definitely not too late. The bubble is pretty weak this year, which improves State's odds.

I doubt any other bubble team can claim this resume (data from RealtimeRPI as of midday yesterday):

- 2 top 10 RPI wins, including one on the road

- #5 SOS

- 4 top 50 RPI wins, 7 top 100 RPI wins (by end of season, hopefully 10+ top 100 RPI wins)

- Worst loss to #139 Wake on the road

State's remaining regular season schedule: VT, @UNC, @BC, @Clemson, Syracuse.

If they win 3 or more of those games, including @UNC, they are in, as that would be 18+ wins, including 3 top 15 RPI wins, with 2 of those on the road. If they lose at UNC but win the other 4 games, they are in, as that would be 19 wins and no bad losses against a very tough schedule. Otherwise, it depends on the details.

State needs to treat all remaining games as must win games, but that isn't really true of the UNC game. Winning that would virtually clinch a bid, but that isn't required. Virginia Tech is particularly crucial, since that game is at home and a loss would be State's worst loss of the season by far.

If they beat Virginia Tech and Syracuse, lose to UNC, and win 1 of the other 2 games, I think they will be in, but that will make it very close.

:wolf:
The problem is that the losses have just piled up.

I *think* there has been only one 14 loss at large team in the NCAA, a 16-14 Georgia team a handful of years ago.

State has 11 losses. Add one loss in the ACCT. That means they can only lose one of the remaining five ACC games to feel comfortable going into the selection process with 13 losses. At MOST they can lose 2. Assuming a loss @UNC then at MINIMUM they need to win 3 of: VT, @BC, @Clemson, Syracuse. Tough task.

At-large selections since 1985 with 14 losses:

Arizona 2008 19-14 (.576)
Georgia 2001 16-14 (.533)
Villanova 1991 16-14 (.533)
Kansas State 1990 17-14 (.548)
Villanova 1990 18-14 (.563)
LSU 1987 21-14 (.600)

It is definitely rare. But it is also rare for a team with 14 losses to have the resume State has.

No team has ever been an at-large selection with more than 14 losses. So I agree that the team needs to finish 3-2 or better in the last 5 games.

Fortunately, the team is playing well. They are 4-6 in their last 10 games, which doesn't sound good, but that includes wins over Duke and Louisville and close losses to UNC (by 2 points), UVA (4), and Notre Dame (3). They really only played one bad game in that stretch -- at Clemson. (And even that was really just one terrible half.) They had 8 days off before the past two games, and they just played their best game of the season, and now they have another week off. Good timing for extra time off.

They have proven that they can play well enough to beat any opponent. I am optimistic they are going to finish strong and make it in.

Good Lord, how did they pull that off? I thought he was life-timed in.

This team could be having a great season, but I think its youth has been the biggest factor in the majority of close losses. Even with the close losses, I have been impressed with how well the team has played against good teams. I really don't think there are any superstars on the team, but there are several solid players, and that can really be a plus for us next year since not many will be leaving, and there aren't many seniors. I think the team is good enough to win the remaining regular season games, but I also think the team has enough flaws to lose some. Hopefully the win over Louisville on the road has pumped some confidence back into the team. :wolf:

I've always liked Vitale.

Boy, I'm not sure that Roy and the boys can make the 8 mile trip to Durham tomorrow night with all this icy weather. Maybe they should call off the game?

Other than some black ice it should be fine, but if not, I'm sure Fats Thomas can hook up Roy and the team with a ride.

Probably be better to just call the game, you know, to make it safer for the kids.
Unless it it dumps snow and ice tomorrow late making the road conditions horrible like last year, it will probably be fine.

Maybe I'm alone...but he's always been fingernails on a chalkboard to me.

I love his enthusiasm and obvious love for the game and this rivalry but I've just been tired of his "act" since the second time I heard him say, "Diaper Dandy, baby!"

I also hate Chris Berman with a passion.

And hated Madden with a blazing hot fury...so take all that for what you will.

Apparently I hate America.

There was a time when **** Vitale was one of the most insightful and most prepared national announcers in any televised sport. He was great for the game and was a big contributor to the growth of the sport when ESPN started televising it 4-5 nights a week.

That time IMO ended a long time ago.

I think he still does a good job at age 75. He can be obnoxious, but that's him. I love his joy for college basketball. I'm disappointed that he won't be calling tomorrow nights game. He has been the voice of that game for decades, and I think it sucks that ESPN told him he wouldn't be doing it tomorrow. Booooooooooooooooooooooooo

FWIW, usually in the Carolinas there is a local broadcast. I feel like I haven't had to/been able to see Dukie V call a UNC/Duke game in a number of years. Is that just in Charlotte, or do you triangle folks have that too?

I'm in the Triad, and that game is usually on local broadcast and ESPN.

I feel like they always black out ESPN here and I have to watch the local broadcast, with G-Man and someone else.

Maybe that changed recently.

I'm in the triangle

I think they use to black out the ESPN broadcast here and just show the local but now I can see both

Yeah, usually Brando and G-Man are doing it on the local Jefferson Pilot (I know they don't call it JP anymore but I can't keep up) stations. Speaking of G-Man, he's not doing the game this week because his fiance passed away the other day.

OK, I guess I was "lucky" and just never noticed that they stopped blacking out ESPN, lol.

Great plays by Jones at the end of regulation, but the Heels just ####### gave it away. Disappointing. Congrats to the Duke guys.

hope Jones sticks for 1 more year, but he's proving he's a baller. Best PG we've had for a full season since Hurley IMO.

And I hate the cheats obviously, but give them credit, they looked WAY better tonight than they have the last 5 or 6 times I've watched them play. If Tokoto could play like this against teams other than Duke (he has played big in all the matchups IIRC) that would help their team a ton.

Aren't you allowed 13 scholarship players? Why did Duke only have 10 prior to losing 2 guys?
K rarely uses all his scholarships. He just hasn't gotten in the habit of getting guys in the 75-100 range to fill out the bench.

They also had offers out to a few other bigs this past year. (Reid Travis and Kevon Looney). I think they thought they'd get one of them for sure.

Next year's gonna be ugly if Jones and Winslow leave. They're in on a few really big time recruits, (and probably get Brandon Ingram if Winslow leaves) but no PG.

You forgot to mention how the refs tried to give it to NC and how Roy coached like a JV coach.
Huh? There was one missed call. There were several bad calls against UNC, but that's how it goes when you're on the road. And Paige got hammered by WInslow on the last play, although I know you can't really call a foul there.

Against Duke? One at the end on, I think Winslow. There were a bunch missed or bad against UNC. Did you even watch the game? Hell, Bilas mentioned several of them.

Is this a Ripleys alias?

Ok.

:lmao:

calls weren't a big deal for either team tonight. Duke turned the ball over a ton, was hurt by Oakfor's injury, and for most of the game was out rebounded by one of the better rebounding teams in the country. Like i said before the game, anything can happen. unc fans have to be happy with the effort they showed, most Duke fans are probably disappointed in ours, but we won, and we'll take it.

I'll wait for the intelligent Duke fans to check in. Thanks though.
Right. I notice you didn't even respond to my query about coach Williams. How big of a lead did he let slip away in the last couple minutes of regulation? How many time outs did he have? Do you think he made any mistakes by not using his time outs during that period of time while Duke cut a double digit lead to zero?

I'll wait for the intelligent Duke fans to check in. Thanks though.
That's the guy that spends most of his time following Tim around so I would just ignore him.

As I mentioned in the CBB thread Roy was horrible tonight - IMO.
Right. Tim follows a lot of people around. Having posts in the same thread as that ##### doesn't mean one "follows" him. How many posts do I have in his thread?

Ah, thanks. Don't recognize the user name.

Yea, not great in game work, although there seldom is with him. More of a recruiter and overall strategy guy than in an excellent in game coach.

I will say that I think people harp on the lack of TOs too much. I really think it make less difference than everyone thinks in the outcomes, although he certainly could/should call more. I was actually very surprised at how early K used his last TO.

This really was an absolute theft. UNC owned Duke for the entire 2nd half and then threw it away. Duke made some HUGE plays down the stretch, but that game is over if Britt's ### doesn't pucker up at the foul line.

You just know they stuck Okafor with a painkiller needle Varsity Blues style after he went down with the ankle. Wouldn't be shocked if he sees seriously reduced minutes on Saturday against Clemson. I'd say they could sit him, but then Ryan Kelly's 6'4 younger brother is their 8th man....

The TOs are one thing but he didn't double Okafor enough IMO or foul him enough.

It was painfully obvious that you CANNOT let Okafor go one on one with anyone...the guy is just unreal.

So...I'd definitely knock Roy there...pick your poison though...but damned if I'd allow Okafor to just do whatever he wants.

Hard to stop Tyus when he's playing like that though.

I can't knock Roy on the TO's...I'd have called one to stop the tide...but still...he lets them play...so that's his thing.

I was really impressed by UNC's ability to get to the basket.

I thought for sure Paige would have his way but damn...Tokoto was everywhere and UNC had a bunch of players cutting, juking and slicing to the basket with unreal ability.

I said it in the other thread...and I say it again here...I'd have Okafor start practicing granny shots at the line.

I've been worried about Duke's FT shooting all year and it's still ugly at times...which is odd when you have two of the nation's leaders in FT percentage on the court at all times...but that's how bad everyone else is...

I'll wait for the intelligent Duke fans to check in. Thanks though.

Sorry. Still waiting for you to total my posts in the "Tim" thread. Because surely if I "followed him around" I'd have a boatload in THAT thread. Or it could be that you're just a f'ing idiot and the fact that we both post in threads doesn't mean either one of us is following the other. So please enlighten us on how many posts I've posted in his thread. TIA.

D*ck.
