Not a bad haul for the Phillies. Love Williams, kid has transformed this year into a guy that looks like an above average long-term asset. Alfaro is a known quantity, top 25ish guy.

ETA 2: Rangers also did well to not give up Mazara or Thompson. Mazara is the next great power prospect IMO.

Not sure how to feel about this trade from the Rangers perspective, if they can sign Hamels going into next year it'll make me feel better, and they unloaded Harrison without giving up Gallo or Mazara, but I dunno it does seem like a pretty big haul we're sending back.

DD talk to me about Thompson, I don't really know much about him other than the Rangers got him last year in the Soria trade, he was somewhat highly rated but has scuffled a bit this year..

DD talk to me about Thompson, I don't really know much about him other than the Rangers got him last year in the Soria trade, he was somewhat highly rated but has scuffled a bit this year..

Not one word of Thompson's story changed with his introduction to full-season ball: future quality mid-rotation starter in, future quality mid-rotation starter out. The 20-year-old's slider is his best pitch, and makes it easy for him to rack up strikeouts despite work needed on his fastball command, changeup and nascent curveball. Thompson projects as more of a groundball machine, eventually. Early returns on the 2012 second-rounder are appealing, and while the upside doesn't wow, he's headed for a future as, well, a quality major-league starter.

Top 50 prospect, plus fastball and slider. Needs to develop a third pitch but he has #2 upside and probably a #4 at worst.

Rangers kept Chi Chi and Mazara and the system is still one of the better ones in baseball. I like the trade for both teams. How can you not love getting Cole Hamels? He's a beast who doesn't care about park factors or anything else.

Hamels has a very friendly contract for a pitcher who has put together what he has over the years vs. what other similar pitchers are commanding in FA, and that's under team control through 2018.

This is basically a cross post from the Phils thread, but I'm really going to miss Cole but the Phillies had to do this deal and start the rebuild in earnest. Best pitcher in my lifetime to grow through the Phils organization. Rangers fans are going to love him, good team guy and all too and just fun to watch work. Just the 1/2 of Yu/Hamels is kinda dirty for the next few years if Yu comes back 100%.

This would be Reyes' 7th straight year with a negative UZR, his range has tanked and has never really recovered. I think it's pretty safe to say that he's not a good defender at this point. Tulo's always relied more on his sure hands than his range, but it's absolutely not out of the question that he's hit his wall, defensively. But I don't think it's early enough to tell.

Both are better than Ian Desmond who the Yankees are gonna give a 9 figure deal. Reyes is probably a 2Bman at this stage, no argument there. Tulo is solid but age is creeping into his range. Can't wait for the fielding fx to come out, I heard they were gathering data is 2015 but haven't heard a thing since. I think we will finally have reliable data points once we see those metrics. Until then fielding is still the great unknown in sabermetrics.

Because of my fascination with Moneyball and how that whole draft played out, it's a bit ironic that Blanton was drafted only seven picks behind Hamels and both were traded tonight.

Yeah the Colorado end would look a lot better if it was just the three prospects. Reyes (only because of his contract) has negative value, but Toronto likely doesn't do it without Reyes going the other way to make it mostly salary neutral for the next couple years (post 2016, Jays only major commitments are Martin/Donaldson/Tulo).

I think it makes sense. Moss hasn't been great this year but fills a need with Holliday being out for however long. Kaminsky is a good prospect but is still in A ball. Seems like a fair deal to me.
