The Giants are in a different league literally and financially. They have high enough revenues to not have to worry about arbitration years and free agency. They value and in some cases overpay for continuity. They kept Huff, Scutaro and Lincecum past their sell-by dates where a more ruthless organization would have turned the page. The organization has gotten much better in scouting, development and in keeping their young talent. They have traded prospects for veterans but few have come back to burn them badly.

The Oaklands can't do this because their payroll is half that of the team across the bay. I thought Beane was absolutely right to go for it last summer. That club had enough talent to win even though it didn't turn out that way. Win or lose, they would have had to blow things up this year or next. Beane characteristically began the rebuilding process before most others would have. It's too soon to tell if the returns for Donaldson, Kazmir and Zobrist will pay off eventually. But the lineup on the field right now isn't particularly young or good.

Well they've just traded off 3 of their best players for minor league help, that put a pretty significant dent on their ROS outlook. Puke for Puk. I like the bones of what they have for 2016, but how they look right now (which, for a low-budget team that has traded off its expirings, is relatively not bad) isn't really relevant to next year. Beane's said he's going to try and build a "dynamic" farm system a la Houston.

I thought Kazmir's signing and trade can be considered a victory, even not ultimately knowing what's going to become of the prospects that he was dealt for. But I think he gave them about 4-5 wins over a year and a half, which isn't bad for the 15-16mm he collected, total. Zobrist seems good. Donaldson, like I said, probably bad but dunno how bad. It could be CarGo bad.

 
Royals acquire Jonny Gomes for a minor league PTBNL.

If the Royals shoved all their chips in the middle when they acquired Cueto, adding Gomes means they just splashed the pot with their car keys.

 
This is making my head explode. Can someone explain how Brad Ziegler gets a hold AND a loss in this situation:

Enters the game in the bottom of the ninth, D'backs up 4-1 ...

Descalso 1B

Blackmon K

Reyes 2B

Arenado 1B, drives in two, lead now 4-3

CarGo L7

LeMahieu inf 1B, Arenado to third on Ziegler E

Hundley BB

Now Ziegler gets pulled with the bases loaded and still a 4-3 lead, but having given up two runs.

Ben Paulsen 1B, drives in two, game over.

Obviously Ziegler gets the loss, responsible for all four runs in the inning. But a HOLD??? How? Because Arizona still was ahead when he got pulled, despite his best (worst) efforts.

This makes no sense at all.

Yeah, I know that's how it works. Just pointing out that this particular example shows how dumb that part of the rule is.

It just doesn't make sense that you can get a hold and a loss, just because you were fortunate enough to get an out (in this case, two) and not completely throw up all over yourself before the manager has the good sense to get you out of there.

He makes sense as the other side of the platoon from Kendrys, and KC will obviously have plenty of room for him when rosters expand. I'm also assuming the guy KC gave up for him is a non-prospect/factor. But is a guy who can only hit lefties and terrible defensively worth a bench spot in a playoff series? Certainly not in the WS, where he'd have to pick up a glove and you have to sit Morales or Hosmer in NL parks.

Assuming KC hangs on to the "1 seed", they'll play the wildcard winner, who could be NYY, Toronto or Texas. NY's rotation for the playoffs right now would probably be Tanaka Flocka, Pineda, Eovaldi, and guessing Severino gets the nod over Nova. Either way, all righties.

Toronto is going to assuredly have Price lined up for the WC game or game 1, which means if they face KC, the Royals won't see him until later. So you're probably looking at some combination of Buehrle, Dickey, and Estrada/Hutchinson alongside him, so at least they have two lefties in Buehrle and Price.

Texas, like Toronto, is probably going to line up Hamels for WC/G1. They do have Holland who almost assuredly will make the rotation, Perez is another lefty but his spot doesn't seem assured. I think a Martin Perez vs. Yovani Gallardo decision comes down to the matchup.

Houston, who they probably won't see in the LDS but maybe the LCS have lefties in Keuchel and Kazmir, who will likely be joined by...I dunno. Feldman and Fiers? Fiers and McHugh? I'd probably go Fiers and McHugh.

So Gomes probably makes the roster for two series, and (I would guess) no WS. And as long as those series aren't against NYY, unless they decide to basically use him as a PH. But who knows, Zobrist gives them some nice flexibility and they have plenty of defense, maybe they lug him along as a PH?

 
Actually true: Word had gotten out that the fix might've been in before the 1919 series, I think Chicago went from like -400 to almost even for the series. This is because, obviously, that it was clearly evident that a lot of well-coordinated and smart money was coming in on the other side.

It was pretty dumb on the part of the players.

Kelvin Herrera and Alex Rios have it for sure, out for two weeks minimum.

We are putting together an 'Always Game' Award, which will be announced at the PA award dinner. I'm lobbying over the top hard for KK...sending daily tidbits to the rest of the committee putting the candidate list together. He's in for the Rays...but now it'll partly come from a public vote. Stay tuned.

 
I'm officially in favor of extending the netting a bit farther down the line. Managed to get some really good seats to Mets game last night and almost got drilled by a line-drive foul. Hit a seat or two behind us with one of the loudest "crack!" noises I've heard. Got out of the way and all, but someone looking away for even a moment could be totally ####ed in that situation.

 
Yea, definitely.Throwing guys out trying to tag up. Accuracy throws from certain spots on the field. Slick double play combos.

 
Kershaw at 100+ pitches, up 1, Mattingly lets him hit in the bottom of the 8th (1 out, none on) instead of pinch-hitting and going to arguably the best closer in the game. #DonnieBaseball.

 
Kershaw hangs a breaking ball to Duffy 2-2, who lines it for a base hit. 120 pitches. Lets him pitch to Posey. Another single.
