2015 NBA Thread: I felt a great disturbance in the trolls, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. (2 Viewers)

Bananafish,

Have you ever gone the other way on these long odds things.  Have you risked say $900 for a return of $100?  Seems that would be a difficult emotional choice, one much more likely to be made by institutions, not persons.  Almost undoubtedly it is the smart play to be going long to short, but it seems emotionally nearly impossible for the small time player just looking for some juice on a game or series.
Yeah, emotionally, betting big favorites sucks. Laying a lot to win a little leaves you with a pretty sick feeling if things don't go your way. Picking up nickels in front of steamrollers, or something like that.

A good bettor, IMO, should be fairly agnostic: You figure out the probability of x happening, compare it to the break-even %, and bet accordingly. But with a -900 favorite, you can only be so profitable.

I've been donk-betting boxing a lot, where you see massive favorites. -6000, -10000, things like that. I usually end up doing big donkey parlays.

So the 2016 NBA season starts tonight?

The Cavs are a different team now from a style and health perspective, and they've had enough time to adjust. Should be a better series than last year. When Love and Irving are involved defensively, the Cavs are tough to match up against. The problem for the Cavs, among other things, is when those two guys are turnstiles.

I know there's this whole playoff thing going on, but I was traveling for a while and this thread blew up.  Did people at least take the time to make the requisite, "Just when you thought James Harden couldn't play less defense" jokes?

Remember when others were spouting off about Love being better than Melo.  I guarantee you Melo's defensive rating would be better as well as PPG and assists.

Love's been incredibly efficient on offense this postseason and especially so from 3.  While Melo's more athletic skills would be a boon on defense(outside of rebounding, Love is much better there), his inefficient volume shooting isn't exactly something that would benefit this Cleveland offense.

Love is averaging 9.6 rebounds per game, I'm not sure 1-2 more rebounds per game would offset Melo's defensive contributions.  Also Melo would flourish in a role where he can camp out on 3 pt line like at the Olympics.  No doubt in my mind that he could match or exceed Loves offense.

Adonal Foyle sent him a note about how bad his defense is...

Love is averaging 10.6 rebounds per 36 in the playoffs(and over 11 for his career per 36).  Melo averages less than 7 per 36 for his career.  4 extra rebounds a game is big, especially in the playoffs.

Melo is not the same player he was in 2012.  He's shooting 34% from three in the last two years on about 4 attempts a game.  Love is averaging 45% in the playoffs on nearly 7 attempts.  Furthermore, if you look at advanced shooting stats, nearly 30% of Melo's shots are 2 pointers greater than 15 feet.  Love is at 10% of his shots being 2 pointers greater than 15 feet.  Long 2s are not going to fit into Cleveland's offense(really shouldn't be a focal point of any offense)  If you truly believe Melo would be as efficient or even more so then I'm not with you on that.  Melo would absolutely be a better play maker, but Cleveland doesn't need another play maker.

Going back a few days.  I didn't see the game where Lebron went stumbling backwards after being hit my Thompson's arm/elbow.  Two Raptors players were immediately T'd up.  Did those technicals stand, or was there a call reversal?

TIA

The tech on Carroll (I think it was him) was nullified.  I don't remember there being a second tech on Toronto on that scrum.

After Kyrie went down last year, I forgot about Miller getting <10 mpg.

Lebron with Thompson, Delly, JR, Mozgov, Shump, Jones, and Miller as the 8 man rotation.  Yikes.

I forgot Game 5 went to OT too.  Cavs almost got shutout.

What's a Lude? Like a dude? Edit - never mind just re-read the post.

They should just keep fouling the chiseled one. Not calling them tonight. Showed one going to the break on Bogut.

Are you going to whine and complain the entire series like last year?  You are off to a great start.

Cleveland's defense has been atrocious so far this game.  They are lucky GS is missing a ton of open shots.
