2016-17 NBA Thread: Finals are over, please go away (1 Viewer)

My fondest Todem memory was when Lebron left the Heat.  Weeks leading up to the departure we had to hear how Miami was superior to Cleveland in every way and there was NO WAY Riley would have Lebron leave on his watch.
What was I supposed to say? I am a massive Heat homer man. We went to 4 straight Finals and won two titles. It was a gut wrenching kick in the balls by Lebron (which lasted about a week lol). Wade leaving is not even close to when Lebron left. But Wade was the reason he left......the irony. And Waded opted out of a massive payday because his BFF could not even tell him to opt in....so much for friendship and loyalty LOL!!

Anyway....it's all fun for me. Glad we can entertain with some homer posting and hyperbole.

Your right if only Dolan would have been smart enough to say "the plan" as an excuse for being worst the team in the league the fan base could sleep better at night.
And you know, there actually is a plan. Seems the Sixers are in pretty good shape going forward. Knicks will be entertaining but in a reality TV kind of way.

:suds:

Ethan Skolnick reporting that Pat Riley did not even make a phone call to Wade during the process, :oldunsure:  that's cold and says an awful lot about the situation. Whether you agree with it or not, clearly Riley was not trying to actively retain Wade. They made it look like they were trying to the fans $40M/2Yrs but the reality is they wanted to part ways or limit any long term financial obligations. Bosh got $118M/5 yrs just 2 seasons ago, Wade carried the team on his back through the playoffs.

It means that Riley and Arison are not feeling that bad, they have some sort of plan.

if Wade were coming back to Miami, he would still be the best player on the team, yes/no? If you say yes then it is understandable why Wade wanted to feel appreciated by the Heat. I'm stunned Riley didn't reach out to him and I think I'm going to hate more and more of the details.

Arison was not going in to mend fences, he went to say good bye and thank Dwyane Wade.

Miami will be trying to stop Bosh from getting on the court. If they can keep him off until Feb they start getting cap relief. I know folks are saying Bosh will play but I am not 100% sure of it now that Wade is gone. All bets are off IMO, I expect Bosh and Dragic to be moved along, they total over $40M. Miami could easily have over $50M, maybe a lot more to go hunting next summer.

If they go this route I would expect a strong backlash so maybe that pressure will keep Bosh around but at this point Miami should be trying to to get a high lottery pick the next 2 seasons while they can.

No words necessary.  Everyone here is really great about remembering when someone makes a bad/homer prediction.  Has happened to me several times.  Im just playing along.

It's called a divorce. Never pretty.

Only this upcoming season can we have a protected lottery pick (1-7) the following year we have to fork it over no matter where it is to the Suns for the Dragic trade.

MARK YOUR TIME GSW...

Jennings + Willy + Thomas + Kuzia + Plumlee = Championship.
As if the Knicks weren't already dominating the NBA FA period:

Marshall Plumlee's 3-year deal with the Knicks is fully guaranteed in the first season, sources confirm. The 6-11 Plumlee played on the Knicks' Summer League team and should give the Knicks depth on the front line. His brothers are NBAers Mason and Miles Plumlee. Newsday first reported that the first year of Plumlee's deal is guaranteed and Sheridan Hoops first reported the length of Plumlee's deal. The Knicks now have 12 players under contract. Summer Leaguer Ron Baker also received some guaranteed money from the club and is expected in training camp.
ANOTHER GOOFY PLUMLEE IS GETTING MONEY FROM AN NBA TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111111

Losing every game and alienating yourself from signing any decent free agent is a surefire recipe for success.  Similar to an obese person on a cookie only diet who says they don't need to exercise or cut back on caloric intake because they are on a "diet" and "trust the plan"

I thought you all posted 2018 protected and 2019 Unprotected so I thought maybe we had a 2017, guess not. The news just gets worse.

Then yes, Miami has to push Bosh into not playing and take his paycheck, that's not going to be easy or fun.

So they have one in 2017 and could have one in 2018 if they can tank it enough...honestly its what they need for the next 24 months.

This will be a tank type year, get a high pick (hopefully) and go to town in free agency. We shall see.

 Sorry the team you don't root for made you so mad. You can jump on the bandwagon in 2 years when we start our title runs.

I'm indifferent to Sixers.  Happy to see them on the schedule because no matter how bad the Knicks are its a winnable game.  I'm questioning your blind faith in a "plan" that has continuously seen Sixers fail year in and year out.  Fail so badly that the commissioner had to step in behind the scenes.  If anyone should be mad it should be you the fan having to watch the dumpster fire, or the owner who now owns the (or one of the) lowest valued franchise(s) in the league.

Commissioner didn't step in because they failed. Otherwise there would be annual meetings for NY, Sacro, recently LA wondering wth is going on there. Commissioner stepped in because Hinkie exposed the game. They succeeded in exactly what they wanted to do.  Get so bad that you get high picks. Sell off aging or high priced assets for future picks and build it from the ground up.

This season, we'll have 5 lottery picks on the floor with 2 high firsts next year and another high first in 2018. Add to that they didn't jump into the spending spree this year meaning they'll be one of the top teams in terms of money next year to sign whoever they want.  We'll be ok.

I love the explanation.  Apparently the 107-8 figure baked in an assumption that teams won't spend enough this year.  That won't be the case, so they lopped off 5 million.

With cap holds, GSW is 10 million over the 17-8 cap now.  Previously they could renounce Livingston (6 million hold).  Now they will probably have to renounce Iggy (11 million hold).
I've seen Livingston's hold at $10M and Iggy's at $16M.  Thought it was pretty apparent that Iggy was going to come back on a (relatively) team friendly deal anyway so renouncing him was already in the plans. This is a minor speed bump at worst.

Yeah I think Iggy's going to enter the "ring chaser" phase of his career after next year, playing cheaply for only GS or another contender. Think they'll find a way to work around it, he's never struck me as a guy who's just gonna take the most dough no matter what.

Also, what tech geek in their right mind is going to leave the Bay Area. His Twitter handle is @andre for chrissake.

With Boban on board, Pistons clearly now title favorites IMO.

Big question though is whether they pull back that max offer to Drummond - that's a lot of money to pay a backup center.
He can shoot free throws, right?

Would be gobs of fun to see him and drummond on the court at the same time.

I've wondered about this several times.  How did this happen?  So I googled it and it says his business manager got it for him as a present, which I guess kind of explains it but not really.

I'd always thought that he was just using Twitter before everyone else but I'm dumb apparently. But if it was a "present", that means his manager probably gave the original @andre a decent sum of money to give up his handle.

#######IT.  Now I'm down the CARMELO Rabbit Hole.

Since insurance pays if a player can't play, why wouldn't someone trade for Bosh?  yes, he gets paid a lot but if he plays he's good and if he doesn't it costs nothing.  Is it because the cap hit would be prohibitive?

What team would benefit taking that type of risk let alone giving up anything out value for him?

I'm saying I don't see the "risk" except for the cap space.  If he plays you get a good player.  If he doesn't, insurance pays the bill.  So a team far below the cap could pick up a pretty good (when healthy) stretch 4.

Well the insurance doesn't kick in for a year or so, so you're on the hook for that money and cap space. If he's cleared to play, plays a month, another clot gets found then the insurance clock starts again. That is a lot of risk that a team with playoff hopes isn't going to take. A rebuilding team doesn't make sense because Bosh isn't getting younger and if he does play, he's costing you ping pong balls.

What team do you think would do this? And remember that Miami doesn't have any 1st to package with him.

We don't know the exact terms and extent of the insurance coverage, and he still has a pretty big cap number - $24 million, plus any possible trade kicker. If he comes back at all this year, the team will have to continue to carry his salary on their books through next offseason, precluding them from offering that money to a big time free agent. Even a team like the Sixers could probably find a way to use that space more productively.

Iggy's actually making decent coin through a lot of Lacob's contacts in regards to venture capitalism. I'm sure that got Durants attention as well.

Lacob is a partner in one of the biggest Venture Capital firms in the bay area. I believe it's where he accumulated a lot of his wealth.

Anyways it's been reported that he makes a point to introduce his players to a lot of the big shots in the business, allowing them to invest in

companies coming into fruition. He has been known to use this as a selling point to attract and hold players he's interested in.

but pop can't even give a player a bottle of wine?

Festus Ezeli signed a 2/15 deal with the Blazers. The second year is a TEAM option. Teams must have really been scared away from his injury history because he is worth more money than that, and I'm not really much of a Ezeli fan. The Lakers or Knicks would have been much better off giving him a 3 year deal rather than Mozgov or Noah's ridiculous 4 year deals.

Fun story about players and investors that I may have told here before.  My last boss was employee 16 or so at Rackspace.  He told me that when RAX was looking for funding Pop and Robinson each chipped in a million bucks. the payoff at IPO was more than either of them ever drew from the Spurs....in their entire careers.

But then they wouldn't be the Lakers and the Knicks.
