That seems like a big assumption to me, but I would agree that knowing the longer term trend is key to getting a better idea of the full picture.
The assumption was based on how it was characterized, a four year downward trend. I tried to get the info over a longer term but the site I tried (mangameslost.com) wasn't working.

Could be selective use of statistics to back up a point of view.  Could have been a one year blip in an overall downward trend, so they used the year after the blip.  You could be completely right.  I don't know, and I'm mostly talking out of my ###.

Sure, good point.  But it's a four year trend that almost perfectly coincides with when teams started using DNP-Rest regularly- you can pretty much pinpoint the start of the trend to the 2012-13 season, when Stern fined the Spurs after they did it for a national game but then he retired the next season and everyone started doing it because Silver took a different approach. And I assume the data isn't a steady downward trend over decades, which would mean we can't just attribute this to general improvements in technology or travel or whatever.

I'm open to any other theory, but at first glance this seems like more than a coincidence.

have to include the "tough guy" factor by which players either played or were forced to play so as to save face. fans want to moan & groan about players being soft now.. maybe they're just smarter? players can't be forced, under threat of losing their job, to play at all costs.

it's the old brag that your grandpa worked 3 jobs every day, 7 days a week and never missed a minute, or took a vacation for 45 years. then he retired at 60 and died a week later of exhaustion. well, yeah, he had to because he was getting paid 6 cents an hour and couldn't afford to miss a day even if it was killing him.

Phil Jackson must be playing 4D chess or something, because otherwise, continually trashing a star player while saying that he shouldn't be playing for your team anymore seems like a really dumb thing to do if you want to get something in return for him. Especially when you even say that the trade offers you received in the regular season weren't good enough.

Porzingis skipped his exit meetings because he's upset at management as well. The Knicks have overcome some stiff competition to be the most dysfunctional team in the league.

If they rest every game they'll never get injured

Just some 1st round playoff predicitons:

Golden State over Portland in 5. (If Nurkic is healthy and plays--I expect it to be a hard fought 5 games)

Clippers over Jazz in 7

Houston over OKC in 5 (I wouldn't be surprised to see OKC win 2 at home and push it to 6)

Spurs over Memphis in 4.

Eastern Conference:

Boston over Chicago in 5 (I do think that Chicago has sleeper potential to push this to 6 if they play their hearts out)

Cleveland over Indiana in 6 (I don't think this series will be the steamroll that most people predict it to be. I think Cleveland will win a game or two in a big fashion-but I do think Indiana will scrap together a couple of wins)

Washington over Atlanta in 6-  (I just like Washington as a team, Wall is playing great, Beal is legit, Porter is shooting great from distance, and Gortat is a big that can help against Howard).

Toronto over Milwaukee in 6--(I think that this series has sleeper potential all over it.  I would not be surprised to see this series go 7--and I would actually have picked Milwaukee to win this series if Jabari was healthy)

We made it!

GSW and Cleveland please.

ETA: Cavs are soft

Just a terrible last shot and play from the Pacers. Miles should have either driven that to the basket or at least taken another moment to get his feet under himself before shooting that.

Banged knees setting a screen. Unknown how serious (don't know if they've updated since). He had to be assisted off.

Hope it's just Game 1, sounds like a MRI, etc. could be warranted though if he's unable to return, and had to get help.

Utah seems to be a team on the rise, Clippers have peaked. Will be interesting to see how this series plays out.

You think?  Sucks that it didn't fall, but if you tell me the next 6 games will be decided by CJ Miles wide open 18 footers, I bet the Pacers would take that.  It was a great look.

Left knee sprain. Won't return tonight
Damn. Probably an MRI and some time missed in a best case scenario. Middle ground is that his season is likely over if it's an injury that takes a few weeks to recover from, but hopefully it's not long-term.

Utah has enough pieces to be annoying without him, but the Clipppers should take this series in 6 games.

Blazers playing surprisingly good defense early. GS with 7 turnover already and the first quarter isn't even over.

Kerr played the death lineup for about 30 seconds...we'll see more of it if this game is close methinks.

:lmao:  Nice phantom call on Portis on that Thomas 3 point play :lmao:  Not only did he not touch him, he wasnt within 2 feet of him. Man that was as bad as it gets

it is funny to me how much i have gone from liking the dubs to not really liking either curry or green any more i am just sort of tired of their act they were so much more likeable when they were not flexing and being punks blah blah blah anyhow on to the bucks i never want to say anything about what will happen in a series after 1 game because teams are hot cold and so on but after one game in the east it seems more open than it has in the past i will say that at least so lets go bangos beat those short eatin dinosaurs from the dinosaur capital of the world toronto take that to the bank bromigos

The Dubs have been flexing and celebrating the whole time. It's just people like it when you do it as the underdog, but when you keep winning people just hate it when you dance.

Love the Bucks BTW. They'll be the finals within the next 3 years. Giannis, Middleton, and Maker are keepers. If I were the Bucks I wouldn't hesitate to trade Parker if they can get a 3D player in the return. If they could add James Johnson it would be awesome.

Green has been making my transition into being a Warriors fan exceedingly difficult.

true about green always flexing and that type of crap but he was never a nut kicker and curry was never a guy that would try to pull stuff with no name guys like pushing them off of the line on a tipoff thats not stuff that i remember them doing when they were an underdog i just remember it last year ramping up and then become full blown this year i hope that they cool it and get back to bball instead of whatever that is take that to the bank brohans

Two pivotal moments for me and I assume may others on the Warriors:

1. The PC after Game 4 last year.  Two guys who grew up with every possible advantage as wealthy children of NBA players crapping on a guy like LeBron about toughness in the NBA was off-putting. Didn't help that their teammate who was already famous for nut shots had just punched LeBron in the nuts.

2. Durant, obviously.  He of course has every right to play where he wants and the  Warriors obviously should do everything they can to build a dominant team, but fans also have a right to reject it if it negatively affects the game, and IMO it does. The regular season was great and the playoffs are still gonna be awesome and fun, but those things are obviously way better if the champion is unknown.  This championship was decided last July, and barring an injury or another crazy development next year's championship is decided too. That's not appealing to anyone and it's reasonable to dislike the people responsible, even if they're not doing it just to be #######s.

Fair points Tobias, though I'd argue that Curry and Thompson both seem to be good dudes who have their priorities straight.

GS's style of play and Steve Kerr are everything that's right about the NBA, and to me that overrides a couple of ill timed comments and Durant's bandwagonery.

I loved the NBA in the 80's when the Lakers or Celts were predestined to be champs.  MAde the exception years all the more compelling.  Ditto the 90's with the Bulls.  Watching the Knicks and Pacers scratch and claw only to come up short was great theatre even though the outcome was obvious from jump.  Warriors being the dominant team this season is interesting only if they win. Sorta like watching Tiger Woods in his hay day.
