2016 Oakland Raiders thread (1 Viewer)

Here is my top 5 wishlist for FA. It is not a fantasy wishlist but one that I think is reasonable considering the money we have to spend and the needs we have.

  1. Re-sign Penn. I am not seeing a better option right now. I would like to get younger there as Penn is getting long in the tooth and it may be costly to keep him as he is looking to cash in on his improved pay but we can't take the hit of a downgrade at LT.
  2. Trevathan. I would love getting him. It will be costly but he would be a huge upgrade for us as a 3 down LB to plug that middle for us. He has tremendous speed and can cover which is something we need for our MLB. Gives us insight on a division rival.
  3. Weddle. Coming off a down year but I think he is coming away from SD with some strong emotions that might refuel his tanks. Would provide veteran leadership that we are need for the defense and the young DB's. Provides some intelligence on a division rival.
  4. Sean Smith. Would shore up our starting CB slot opposite of Amerson. Only 28 and has been good at what he does. Hey- also helps us against the last division rival.
  5. JPP. Adds veteran leadership missing from Tuck and even with the clubbed hand was good when he got back last year. With the big question mark hovering over Mario's kneck, this moves jumps into my top 5. I considered Mario Williams here but I am not sold on Mario being an addition to the locker room where I think JPP would. Not that I would be unhappy with Williams but still.
I would add that I would have put re-signing Aldon Smith in the top 5 but since we can not do that until well into the year for his suspension, I will just make this special note here.
Agree, except for JPP. I want a DE with 10 fingers. I prefer Mario, although he will be more expensive.

Penn's status is the most disconcerting to me. Maybe they feel like someone on the current roster makes a suitable plan B if they cannot sign Penn.

the bruised and battered Raider fan in me can't see us making such a big splash but I have allowed myself to imagine a scenario like the above...resign Penn NOW, sign Trevathan, sign one of the top Safeties, one of the top CBs, sign Mario.

Could you imagine going into the draft with those 5 pieces added to the puzzle. Take BPA available throughout. Still have cap room, I believe, for depth where needed (more DBs!!!!).

That would be a STATEMENT to the rest of the NFL.

ok, back into the basement, chained to the radiator...

I don't know who that would be. Maybe Menelik Watson? He has shown promise, unfortunately he can't stay healthy.

Right, which is why this is disconcerting. Maybe they think there is another FA tackle on the market more worthy of the kind of money Penn is asking for. I like Penn and hope the brass don't regret not getting him locked up earlier.

All will be revealed shortly!

I believe JPP has a few years of youth on Mario Williams and I am not sold on Mario being a good locker room presence (he may be but his discontent- though perhaps understandable makes me just a tad worried). I wouldn't be upset if we got Mario though- that is for sure.

We can not go into this season with a downgrade at LT. Penn is not a Pro Bowl tackle but there are not Pro Bowl tackles we can go out and get and I don't think we have someone on the roster right now that we can plug in there. I am not seeing the option outside of Penn right now.

You guys should be all over tackle Kelvin Beachum when the Steelers let him walk. He isn't a powerful OT. But he always stays between his man and the QB.  And he is smart and savvy as hell. At 26 turning 27, he can protect Carr for several years. The Steelers don't think he is willing to be a RT and save on our cap as such. And frankly, he shouldn't have to. He changed our entire outlook the day he hit the line-up. Steelers just happen to have a proto-type that took the job via injury.

Sounds like a younger version of what we got our of Penn. Solid pass protector but poo for run blocking. I am all for getting younger in most spots with some select high character respected veterans to provide leadership.

I just want that LT spot filled with someone we can count on and not be a downgrade. We do that and then we have the complete freedom of doing what we want to do in the draft with BPA. We are not going to get a LT to start in the draft this season where we are picking and I don't want to trade up to get one. (I say that as if I own the team... :D )

Raiders free agency outlook: Status of Edwards will affect how McKenzie, Del Rio look at acquiring D-line talent

Posted on March 5, 2016 by Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer

Jack Del Rio talks with Malik Jackson as defensive coordinator of the Broncos. John Leyba, The Denver Post
The Raiders have a cornerstone edge player in Khalil Mack and the kind of beef coach Jack Del Rio and general manager Reggie McKenzie love on the interior with Dan Williams and Justin “Jelly” Ellis.

But the unanswered question remains second-year defensive end Mario Edwards Jr., who sustained a neck injury early in the 14th game of the season against Green Bay and finished on injured reserve.

The Raiders, particularly Del Rio, have been tight-lipped about Edwards’ status, saying they are still gathering information.

The only light was shed by McKenzie during a Super Bowl event, when he said the condition might possibly be genetic _ something Edwards has carried around with him since he was a youth.

If the Raiders are unsure about Edwards availability for 2016 and beyond, a big expenditure in free agency or a premium draft pick would be fully justified. If the news is good and they’re keeping it to themselves, the needs up front aren’t as pressing.

Regardless, the Raiders will probably be more active on the outside, with a second pass rusher, than with space-eaters. Williams and Ellis fill those roles, giving Del Rio the kind of interior he had in Jacksonville with Marcus Stroud and John Henderson, and when he was a linebackers coach in Baltimore when the Ravens had Tony Siragusa and Sam Adams.

A look at some possibilities when free agency begins March 9, as well as players under contracts and their own free agents:

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

Ends/edge players

Malik Jackson, Denver: A  3-4 end, but can he be a 4-3 tackle? Doesn’t matter. McKenzie believes in “football players,” which can fit any scheme. The exclusive franchise tag to Von Miller may leave Denver out of the running and the 26-year-old Jackson should get a huge contract in the opening days of free agency.

Olivier Vernon, Miami: Given a transition tag by Miami, the Raiders or any other team with cap space can come up with enough up-front money to get the 25-year-old pass rusher aboard. The deal Miami made with Ndamukong Suh last year eats up $28.6 million in cap space. If Cameron Wake comes free in an attempt to keep Vernon, the Raiders could look in that direction.

Chris Long, Los Angeles: One of the top ends from 2011-13 with 30 sacks and ability to defend the run, the question is whether Long at age 30 can return to that form after playing 18 games in the last two seasons. The legacy factor of bringing in the son of Hall of Fame Raiders defensive lineman Howie Long doesn’t hurt.

Charles Johnson, Carolina: With a cap number of nearly $15 million and only one sack in 2015 (he missed seven games with a hamstring injury), release was a foregone conclusion. But Johnson is 29 and still could have some solid years left. He played well for the Panthers in the Super Bowl.  Would be a Justin Tuck-type acquisition for a respected veteran.

Mario Williams, Buffalo:  Williams, a former No. 1 overall pick, didn’t do himself any favors by complaining about scheme and making 19 tackles with five sacks in 15 games, essentially forcing his own release. Williams’ effort level was questioned, a red flag for McKenzie and Del Rio. Williams, 31, is presently visiting Miami.

Robert Ayers, N.Y. Giants: Ayers, 30, had 9.5 sacks for New York last year. According to profootballfocus.com, he was their best defensive player and had multiple pressures in every game he played. His 48 pressures led the team.

Jason Pierre-Paul, N.Y. Giants: Pierre-Paul, 27, had no training camp and his play was limited after a fireworks accident damaged his right hand, losing his index finger and the tip of his thumb. He finished with six sacks and 34 pressures, getting better as the season went along.

William Hayes, Los Angeles: On one hand, Hayes is 30 years old, but on the other, he’s an ascending player. Played better for the Rams than in earlier stop with the Tennessee Titans and had 40 pressures and 5.5 sacks in a part-time role. In four seasons with the Rams, Hayes had 21.5 of his 29.5 career sacks despite not playing full time.

Tackles

Jaye Howard, Kansas City: In his first season as a starter, Howard, 27, was an excellent run-stuffer and also had 5.5 sacks as a 3-4 end who would likely play inside in a 4-3. He was also a beast against the Raiders, and McKenzie and Del Rio surely took notice.

Brandon Mebane, Seattle: Primarly a nose for Seattle, the general consensus is that the former Cal star has slipped some at age 31. The question is whether Mebane could thrive with fewer snaps in a rotational basis with the tackles already on the roster. Has familiarity with defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr.

Nick Fairley, Los Angeles: Signed a one-year, $5 million contract to play with the Rams after four seasons with Detroit where the former first-round pick (No. 13 overall) never reached his full potential. Has quickness to be a nice counterpoint to Raiders size and power inside.

Paul Soliai, Atlanta : Was highly thought of by the Raiders as a member of the Miami Dolphins, but at 32 appears to be on the downside.

Haloti Ngata, Detroit: Ngata is now 32, probably still sees himself as a premiere inside player, but the Raiders’ interior strength could have them looking elsewhere.

Terrence Knighton, Washington: Rumor-mill had Knighton, 29, targeted for Raiders last season because he had played for Del Rio in Denver. Raiders instead went straight for Williams after Suh signed with Miami.

PLAYERS UNDER CONTRACT

DE Khalil Mack: Two years in, and Mack is an All-Pro at two positions, a Pro Bowler and one of the NFL’s premiere players against both the run and pass. A foundational player whose contract expires after the 2017 season _ just like Derek Carr.

DT Dan Williams: More than consolation prize when Suh signed with the Dolphins, Williams is deceptively quick and was difficult to move on the interior.

DE Mario Edwards Jr.: A second-round draft pick who looked explosive and strong enough to be a first-round pick _ until a neck injury ended his season. Still no word on its severity.

DT Justin Ellis: A training camp treat is seeing this 331-pound tackle up close during drills and scrimmage situations. Expected to take a major leap this year and agile enough to do it.

DT Stacy McGee: In his third year, McGee rebuilt his game under the new coaching staff. Had an impressive rookie year before falling out of favor in Year 2.

DT Leon Orr: Undrafted free agent was called up from practice squad. A locker room live wire and raw talent with the kind of size the Raiders love.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

None

RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

DE Benson Mayowa: Strong enough to hold the edge and athletic in open space, Mayowa will likely be retained.

EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS FREE AGENTS

DE Denico Autry: One of the real pleasant surprises of the 2015 season, Autry played in 14 games with eight starts, had three sacks, a safety and will be counted upon for more this season. Potentially a major find, signed as an undrafted free agent in 2014.

DE Shelby Harris: Has displayed pass rushing ability and potential in going between practice squad and 53-man roster.

The options continue to increase for us and building the secondary. Dashon Goldson released and Dolphins expected to cut Grimes after restructuring talks broke down.

Also read a good take on Osemele being a great addition at RG and prob best option B if we don't sign Penn for LT.

Goldson is trash. Nothing to see there. Grimes isn't worth the baggage of his crazy wife. Keep looking.

Raiders making 'strong push' for OG Osemele

FOX Sports' Mike Garafolo reports the Raiders are making a "strong push" for free agent OG Kelechi Osemele.

Garafalo would "call (Oakland) the favorites" for Osemele, who is the top free agent guard on the market and can also play tackle. Garafolo expects Osemele to command over $10 million per year. Osemele could be a left tackle option in Oakland, where Donald Penn's contract is up. More likely, Osemele would bookend studly LG Gabe Jackson at guard. In Jackson, Osemele, and C Rodney Hudson, the Raiders would suddenly have an imposing interior line.

Looks like we signed Osemele. I like. I would love if we can have him at RG but if we don't re-sign Penn then I think we will have him at LT.

Love it, but we still need an LT option.  I'd rather pay a guy $10M a year to dominate at RG than to half-### it at LT.  I think the Raiders are letting the market set Penn's contract.  They have the cash to match/beat anything, may as well make sure you're not bidding against yourself in the process.

Does Dashon Gohston have anything left in the tank? I didn't see many 'Skins games last season. But I'm thinking he would be a nice veteran addition to the secondary.

And what about Bruce Irvin? Ken Norton connection anyone? If they don't go after him I'd assume it's character concerns.

 Osemele played LT all last year and was pretty damn good at.

Per Sirius, Osemele's deal is worth 12 million a season making him the highest paid player on the team. He is making LT money with this deal. Does this mean that Penn is history? Does it mean that the staff has determined Feleciano isn't the answer at guard? I like the teaming Osemele with Hudson and Gabe on the interior of the Oline. That will put a lot of pressure on the defense and possible open up the outside pass game.

Now get out there and sign some DBs and a playmaking DE!!!

Osemele's deal is reasonable for a LT, or blows doors off the guard market.  Gotta think he's paying LT.  I figure RG/RT is sorted among Feliciano/Hoard/Watson.

CB is the position I want.  Sean Smith would be amazing.  Getting him and the best OL out there would be a big start to FA.

Missing out on Malik is a bummer, that deal is a monster tho.  Would really be nice if Mario comes back.

4 games.  We need an alternate plan as a backup.  Hell I don't even care about how much we're paying him if he can dominate at RG.  What we can't do is pay a dude $12M a year to be below average at LT.  We could pay Khalif Barnes 1/4 of that to be below average (we have been for like a decade).

I'd be happy with Sean Smith or Jenkins.  Then add a safety and good defensive lineman.

The Malik deal is massive.  He's a very good player, but that's an overpay and I'm fine not paying him that kind of money and him signing elsewhere.

Glad that wasn't us getting Jackson for that money.  Too much to pay for 6 sacks a year.  He's gotta dominate in order for that to be a good value.

Posted this in the Derrick Henry thread but I thought maybe it belonged here too...

With Henry his landing spot will be very important but it likely won't be obvious to anyone outside the organization. Most of the time we (the FF community) look at landing spot in terms of opportunity and then OL. With Henry, he almost needs to go to a team that wants him not a team that needs an RB and just sees him as the best back available. I know I will catch heat for this but think about this, Oakland at #44. "He'll never fall that far" or "But Murray..." just hear me out on this one because stranger things have happened.

Their GM (Reggie McKenzie) loves big, "country strong" OL, Mike Tice is their OL coach and Del Rio doesn't might some power run game. Picture this, Crabtree and Cooper on the outsides, Carr under center, a speed receiver in the slot, Murray and Henry in a split backfield. Either of those big backs could can be a lead blocker, both had decent speed coming out of the back field for passes. They don't need to be good route runners because of where they are in the formation. It would allow your OL to cheat inside because old Von speed rushing the edge would run into either of those waiting power backs. If you swap out Walford for the speed guy, your facing nickel. If they stay in their based and go zone, Cooper is going to rip them up. *In my option, Cooper is strongest against zone.* Plus, Carr is likely going to have time. It's likely the defense is going to go nickel. Now, Del Rio gets to whip those two hammers at your nickel defense. With the NFL drifting more to the coverage linebackers this thumping run game is going to take its toll. The best part is that if Oakland were to go with the speed receiver in the slot and the speed both backs have, they can attack all over the field in the passing game too which means you can run a slow, hurry up (rush to the line but don't snap the ball right away) to trap a defense on the field against the hammer brothers. The split backs also means that you can run a ton of different blocking schemes and misdirections.

I just nerded out really bad. It's so fun to think of what they could do. Gets me fired up. I'm not a Raiders fan but it's exciting to think about.

No Raider fan is going to say "but Murray".  We have a need, hell I hope we take Elliott at 14.  But Henry at 44 wouldn't be the end of the world either.

It really seems like they're trying to rebuild the team from the inside out. And making those positions the priority in free agency. Getting strong up the middle, with draft picks and particularly spending a lot of money on both interior lines in free agency the past 2-3 years. And then drafting the BPA. The Osemele deal is very similar to how they started off the free agency period last year by signing Hudson right away. If you pay attention, you see where their priorities are.

I remember people making negative comments when we signed Penn, Howard and Hudson. Now, the negative on Osemele is too much for a G and must be a LT. However, Penn is saying that the Raiders have the edge on re-signing him. Would he say that if they weren't still in contact? Imagine this lineup (assuming healthy).... Penn, Jackson, Hudson, Osemele, Howard. That ends up being one of the better O-lines in the league.

Who's saying it's too much for a G?
I am seeing comments all over the place- basically along the lines that we must not be interested in Penn and Osewele is already penciled in at LT. I think that they ideally want him to be RG and re-sign Penn as long as the market doesn't go crazy and we can get Penn back at a reasonable price for a tackle his age BUT if not, then Osewele is basically our back up plan. I think this signing also helps the negotiations with Penn in that now we are not stuck without many options at LT.

Malik's deal and details being reported all over the place. How is that not "tampering" but the Raiders/Oswele deal is?

I'm sure I'm missing something here...

It's all tampering.  We're in the "legal" tampering window now though, so everyone can do it.

Seeing reports we will sign Bruce Irvin
I had a feeling.... The Ken Norton and Malcolm Smith connection is paying off. He had some character issues early on in his career, but if the team is willing to bring in Aldon Smith, Irvin should be able to fit right in. I'm liking this move.

Sacks the last 4 years:  8.0, 2.0, 6.5, 5.5.  Hope they aren't breaking the bank or that Norton can get more out of him than SEA did.

Sacks aren't the entire measure of a player.  Irvin has talent and he's young.  I think this is a solid signing. Obviously it depends on money but Reggie has shown a knack for team friendly contracts.

Didn't see this coming. Am I wrong in thinking that this means we don't look to bring Aldon back?

The one thing I do like is he does two things we need:

SAM Linebacker and nRight end.  Irvin as mostly a right end on passing downs, and a SAM in the base.  We need both.  Really want to see this contract structure.

Williamson and Caplan also both said we in on Janoris.

We get a cornerback in the next two days....ooooh, baby.  Just Win Baby.

No, but they are a huge factor.  I'm not suggesting it's a bad signing, but until we see the financials it's hard to get too fired up.  He plays a lot like Mack's role was the previous years, lining up at SAM in base and DE in sub.  Lots of value in that and free up  Mack to play with his hand in the dirt full time.  As long as the money is reasonable I'm very happy with it.

Choo choo.  We don't even need a premium cover guy, just someone up to NFL snuff to make the QB hold the ball longer than 2.6 seconds and allow the pass rush to get home.

Both mentioned wit us, Janoris in the last hour or so mentioned by Williamson and Caplan.
