2016 Oakland Raiders thread (1 Viewer)

These are two very different players as well.  Nelson is more like Allen, a free safety.  Whitner clearly is a SS.
Whitner and Allen might be serviceable safety tandem. Whitner apparently can't cover but is a thumper. I still am not convinced Nelson will be a measurable upgrade over Allen but wouldn't be opposed to signing him and letting them fight it out then having some depth. All are one or two year at the most stop gaps.

Yeah.  Whitner did a better job in coverage than I thought, looking back at it.  I think if you have a Whitner, you just don't ask him to do what he cannot do.  I'm OK with vet stopgap safeties.

Supposedly there are "multiple sources" around the league saying that the NFL is 'warming' up to the idea of Las Vegas.

I really do think that this is by far the best option we have. I think it would be a huge win for us in so many ways to move out of California and to Las Vegas. Close enough to both the Bay area and LA fan bases while creating another fan base in the Vegas market. Should be attractive for FA for tax purposes. Stadium wise it could be beautiful. Being able to go see a home game would be attractive for out of town fans like me (while now.... who wants to spend a weekend in Oakland? And SF is been there and done that for me). I really don't see the downside other than being a fight to get it through with the NFL. And much better than being someone's tenant (L.A.) or somehow leftovers (S.D.) or a broke area with no real options for a new stadium not fully funded by the team/NFL (Oakland) which wont happen because our team is broke. What else is there? San Antonio?

Vegas makes the most sense to help return the Raiders to glory.

I have always liked Whitner.  Not an all pro but he seems to be a legit physical presence who has gotten smarter over the years.  I think he would make a good compliment to Nate Allen and may be a good locker room presence.

I think I prefer him to Nelson, but YMMV.

Nelson is more of a FS- so he would battle it out with Allen most likely. Whitner is a SS for sure.

LOVE Aldon back on board. That is making up to be a scary front.

Nelson in for a visit is good to. Certainly can use the depth for sure in that secondary.

now just add a report that Donte Whitner is visiting Oakland, and my head will explode.

If they can go into the draft with Aldon Smith, Donte Whitner and Reggie Nelson all under contract, it would be the best off-season ever and the best we've looked heading into a draft in a very very long time. Then making a move to snack Elliot would be amazing.

Getting harder for even the most pessimistic fans to be unhappy.

Going to guess any delay with Nelson had to do with money.  'Sign before the draft, or we can't promise the deal is there in a month.'

You don't win in the off season but dang it....

From the core we have. Adding top notch guys that look like scheme fits AND retaining our guys of note. I can't remember an off season that had me this pumped up. Honestly, I can't. Maybe..... before the 2001 season?

"snack" Elliot?

sure. or we could snag him as well. ;)

Even in the Gruden/Gannon hey dey, I don't recall an off-season like this. I feel like it was mostly old re-treds in a great system than us building a young core.

I mean, heck, Al Davis was drafting KICKERS in the 1st round in 2000 and we still somehow stayed a perennial playoff team in the early 2000s.

Just searched and found out draft history from those years. Not a Derrick Carr or Khalil Mack in the bunch to build from...

2002
1a. Phillip Buchanon, CB, Miami, Fla.
1b. Napoleon Harris, LB, Northwestern
2a. Langston Walker, OL, California
2b. Doug Jolley, TE, BYU
5. Kenyon Coleman, DE, UCLA
6a. Keyon Nash, DB, Albany State (Ga.)
6b. Larry Ned, RB, San Diego State
7. Ronald Curry, QB, North Carolina

2001
1. Derrick Gibson, S, Florida State
2. Marques Tuiasosopo, QB Washington
3. DeLawrence Grant, DE, Oregon State
5. Raymond Perryman, S, Northern Arizona
6. Chris Cooper, DE, Nebraska-Omaha
7a. Derek Combs, RB, Ohio State
7b. Ken-Yon Rambo, WR, Ohio State

2000
1. Sebastian Janikowski, K, Florida State
2. Jerry Porter, WR, West Virginia
4. Junior Ioane, DT, Arizona State
5. Shane Lechler, P, Texas A&M
7a. Mondriel Fulcher, TE, Miami (Fla.)
7b. Cliffton Black, DB, S.W. Texas State

1999
1. Matt Stinchcomb, T, Georgia
2. Tony Bryant, DE, Florida State
4. Dameane Douglas, WR, California
5a. Eric Barton, LB, Maryland
5b. Roderick Coleman, LB, East Carolina
6. Daren Yancey, DT, BYU
7. JoJuan Armour, LB, Miami (Ohio)

ETA: to be fair, we snagged Woodson in 98...but Darrell Russell the year before that. Call it a wash? :)

Raiders agreed to terms with OLB Aldon Smith.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports it's a two-year contract. Smith is suspended until at least November, but the Raiders apparently didn't want to risk missing out on him for a potential stretch run. It's also a vote of confidence that he's turned his life around. Smith has only 5.5 sacks over his past 16 games, but remains five months shy of his 27th birthday. He still has the potential to be one of the best pass rushers in the league.

I'm so excited and I just can't hide it
I'm about to lose control and I think I like it

Aldon Smith only wanted to go back to Oakland, and his biggest advocate is #Raiders owner Mark Davis. They view Smith as family

They're going to be the pre-season "It" team that every pundit will choose as their surprise playoff blah...blah...blah...

That sucks.

Which is usually a kiss of death.

I would argue though that the one difference is that we haven't gone out and just signed the biggest names on the free agency market but have made smart additions that really fit the scheme. We know Irvin fits the scheme. Sean Smith seems to be pretty close to a version of Richard Sherman. Aldon has time in the system from last year and I think he would have been more productive with more time/conditioning. Osmele is a road grater and it isn't like we are trying to make him a tackle or move him into a ZBS or something.

Usually when they do the "it" team, it is whomever signed the biggest names the most. That doesn't seem to work out very well in most cases.

2 years 11 mill for Aldon, up to 19.5 if he kills it.

I've read on another board that team has a 3rd year option.

It's back to Oakland for Aldon Smith.

The veteran linebacker only considered Oakland, and the Raiders -- especially owner Mark Davis -- viewed him as a priority.NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the pass rusher has agreed to a two-year deal with the Raiders, per a source informed of Smith's situation. The team later announced that they re-signed him.

It's a strong show of faith in Smith, who is currently serving a one-year suspension for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. He won't be eligible for reinstatement until mid-November.

The league-imposed ban came after Smith was involved in an August incident where he was charged with hit and run, DUI and vandalism. The arrest prompted his ouster from the 49ers after four seasons, but Oakland quickly signed him to a one-year pact last September.

Despite his troubles, the Raiders aren't giving up on a player who registered more sacks in the first two years of his career than any player in NFL history (33.5). Over 530 snaps last year, Smith teamed with star linebacker Khalil Mack for 62 hurries, nine sacks and eight quarterback hits before the suspension.

With free-agent pass rusher Bruce Irvin also on board, the Raiders are hoping Smith will return in time to pad Oakland's defense down the stretch. Considering where the team was a few seasons ago, general manager Reggie McKenzie deserves plenty of credit for building one of the AFC's most improved rosters.

This is one way that it's GOOD that Mark is following in Al's footsteps. Loyalty to players creates the same in reverse.

Bodes well for future signings too.

The road trips to Vegas for Raiders games would be.........epic.  Fun.  Really unhealthy.

I'd be looking for back to back home games.

Fly in on Saturday before game day

stay the week

go to the 2nd game

fly out of town

enter rehab

complete court-mandated counselling.

Plan for next year.

Glad to hear positive reports about Edwards recently. Neck injuries/conditions are usually career threatening.

The most concerning thing about it to me was the mystery of it all and the suggestions (not sure if it was ever confirmed) that it was a pre-existing or genetic condition. But keep hearing more and more positive vibes regarding him.

Basically, so far with the one miss on Weddle- all my "if's" and "want's" have been fulfilled on filling needs with smart FA signings (Sean Smith, Osmele, Irvin), retaining key players that were free (Aldon Smith, Penn) and a return of a healthy Mario (not there yet but looking better and better). Nelson (assuming he does sign today) will continue to bolster the secondary. I wouldn't mind bringing in Whitner but if we don't do another transaction- I am beyond happy with what we have done in FA. If we have a draft half as good as the last couple of ones then I really do think we brought together a SB competitive team- and not just for the here and now but for years to come.

That's the one thing I've seen brought up a lot.  There's no real "home field" advantage here.  It's expected many people will book Vegas trips around when their favorite teams are playing, bringing in a much larger visiting fan base than any other city is going to see.  At best it'll be 50/50 with bidding wars determining ticket distribution.  If you're a Chiefs fan from Charlotte, you may not see them for 10 or more years, or you can book your Vegas trip around that game and see them potentially every year.

LA is our answer.  We'd crush the Chargers attendance at the same time.  San Antonio would be my second choice.  I'd take Vegas if that's the only place we can make work (or the fastest/easiest/cheapest), it's much more important to get a first class facility than sit around waiting for the "perfect" thing to happen, but all things considered gimmie LA.

That's interesting.

I don't know if I really buy it.  I mean, I have no doubt that some opposing fans would travel to Vegas for games, but enough to matter weekly?  I dunno.

Still only a 4 hour drive from LA.  I would drive 4 hours 8 times a year, no problem. I think you'd see a lot of LA peeps with season tix.

I agree with this.

Not sure if Las Vegas would keep the "enter at your own risk" for opposing teams as it did in L.A. and does in Oakland but I am thinking it will keep a little bit of that nastiness where there is a reputation to not go unless you are a Raider fan. Sure, that is at odds with the "let's go to Vegas and then see an NFL game" attractiveness that other cities don't have but I think most of the fans for teams like the Chefs and Donkeys live near their teams- so a Vegas road trip to see a road game may not be as appealing. Now, for the random Chef fan living in Wyoming... sure. But as Mass said.... enough to really matter? I am not convinced.

There is a huge fanbase in L.A. that will never move loyalty to the Rams and HELL no to the Chargers. Vegas is only a slightly longer drive than going to SD and we know how we fill those Charger games up. Oakland is not all that too far either. So, a lot of the traveling fans will be Raiders fans. I also think you will build a fanbase in Vegas as well from the locals. It is not a huge market but it is bigger than several other markets without any historical ties to any other teams.

San Antonio is a horrible idea. First, the likelihood of two of the more powerful owners letting a new Texas team come is in almost non existent. Second, you think you can grab "Cowboy and Texan" fans away from people in SA? Third, it is a small market to begin with while having that uphill battle to gain new loyal fans. Finally, I think you will lose fanbase that you otherwise wont lose.

For L.A., I don't want to be a tenant as much as Davis doesn't want to be. I can't foresee getting terms anywhere near being 'good' from that bloodsucker Rams owner because he has not need to give us good terms and he ought to know that the Raiders back in LA mean that we own LA and the Rams become second fiddle even as they own the stadium. But, all in all, I would say L.A. would be the second best option from what I have seen (next to Vegas).
