2016 Oakland Raiders thread (1 Viewer)

I am kinda warming up to the idea.

Las Vegas Raiders.  Has a nice ringer to it.

Let's update the logo so it has the vegas swag to it.
Imagine what the Raiderette squad will look like if we recruit from the...eh-hum....appropriate LV gentleman clubs.

Don't let us down now Reggie!

Depending on the medical and assuming good to decent news on that, if Jaylon is there in the 2nd we would be dumb to pass on him. The only reason you don't take him there is that the medical recheck is bad or still unknown.

I think another ND guy we should think about if still there is Will Fuller. I didn't think he would fall that far but it is looking more like it is a possibility. He has the speed to compliment Cooper/Crabtree well, good route runner and a big playmaker. The knock on him is his hands... being an Irish fan and watching almost every game last tear, I think that is overblown.

Seems like people want to see the Raiders take a WR later in the draft. I thought Seth Roberts made and impact as a rookie on offense, I'd like to see what he can do with a year under his belt. Plus he was injured too. Is WR really that much of a need? I hope this draft is all defense (unless Zeke falls or an OL falls they can't pass on.)

agreed. I like the Cooper/Crabtree/Roberts/Holmes combo, plus our TEs. Let's let these receivers develop and spend our draft picks elsewhere (defense, please).

I'd be shocked if Fuller was there in the second when the Raiders pick.  I could see him being the first receiver taken in this draft.

Rankins.  I keep coming back to Rankins as our pick.

Regarding the WR position, and even RB position, I think we have a WR we love, one we like, and one we think we like.  Holmes is a guy, IMO.  I think after let's say....round 3, that a WR or a RB would have a better shot of making the team and helping than a OG, OT, DT, or CB.  I think we need starters at the latter positions, and depth at the former positions.  Does that make sense?

That's exactly what I'm saying/thinking as well. It's just talk of WR in the 2nd makes me think "don't we have bigger problems to solve with that pick?"

But that's a very un-BPA way of thinking, I know. Guilty as charged.

Titans trade #1 to Rams.

Implications for us?  Well, no one will be looking to trade up to our spot in front of Rams to get Paxton Lynch.  But now maybe Lynch goes in the top 13.  QB going 1/2 seems very possible, and Tunsil to SD seems like the next mortal lock draft pick.

I think it could set up a run on the QB's which could end up good for us.

I'm pretty sure as a result of this trade, Ramsey will fall to 14.  Right?  ... come on, it can happen.    A guy can dream a little ok.

Two weeks!

I wouldn't be surprised to see talk about Lynch to SF and PHI.

Never made sense to me that he wasn't talked about up there.

talk about a best case scenario for us...3 QBs going in the top 13 picks. That would be amazing and not at all surprising.

Fun read.  Give me a safety instead of Henry, and I love it.
I'm warming up to Henry behind our line.

Wow, that's about the roughest way the draft could fall for us.  Elliott, Hargreaves, Rankins, and Lee are all gone in the first.  BPA looks like a toss-up.  I don't think it's Jackson though.  Whoa just noticed Lawson, I think that's the pick there.  Prefer Butler in the 2nd to Henry too but if he's gone I could get behind Henry.

I would not be surprised but I think there will have to be more movement to make that happen. Teams worried that they can't sit where they are and get their QB and then making deals to move up to make it happen. I think that this deal will create more anxiety about that as a QB will come right off the board where as before- there was full confidence that pick #1 would NOT be a QB. If you are the Browns- do you go with Tunsil or do you feel you need to take your QB there because there will be a run on them? If they go QB then I think other teams that before were not as worried will try to make moves to get in to the top 10 and take their QB before he is gone. If that happens, I think there is a very good chance someone freaks out and makes a deal to move up 3-6 to get ahead of the Niner/Eagle picks to get their guy. If not, still a good chance of that happening. I would put 3 QB's going before getting to us as more likely than not... say 65% chance of it happening.

Love that Rams trade. Firstly, it increases the odds of 3 QBs going before pick 14.

Secondly, there's a historically good chance the QB they take will bust and set them back for years. At least, here's hoping. Eff Kroenke.

Thirdly, I think this greatly decreases the chances of the Cowboys or Ravens taking Zeke, as I now see QBs going 1 and 2, dropping so called elites to them (Ramsey/Jack probably), leaving only NYG and Chi between us and the chosen one.

The 2015 Oakland Raiders took many steps in the right direction, witnessing the emerging superstardom of edge defender Khalil Mack, significant growth offensively, and the maturation of players like PFF’s most-improved player, David Amerson (83.4), rookie Mario Edwards Jr. (80.9), and Denico Autry (76.1) on defense.

After making upgrades to their offensive line and adding cornerback Sean Smith (83.8), edge-rusher Bruce Irvin (78.0), and now safety Reggie Nelson (84.2), the 2016 Raiders appear poised to contend in the AFC West and, quite possibly, beyond. In this article we take a deeper look at the re-vamped Raiders’ defense.

While there’s still some work to do, the Raiders boast a front-seven to be reckoned with, with the cornerstone being Mack on the edge. The addition of Irvin, who played a hybrid 4-3 outside linebacker/defensive end role with the Seahawks, gives the Raiders a formidable duo of edge defenders, who combined for 120 total QB pressures last season. While Irvin has never quite lived up to his first-round draft position, he has been at his most productive when in more of a part-time role (11 sacks, 12 hits and 24 hurries in just 533 snaps in 2012). The retention, and possible reinstatement, of Aldon Smith (79.7) and the emergence of Edwards should eventually spell Irvin enough so that he can approach those productivity levels again in 2016. The presence of Irvin and Mack should also allow Edwards to play more defensive end in his second season, a role in which he shined prior to the suspension of Smith last season, posting the 12th-best run stop percentage among 3-4 defensive ends. Nose tackle Dan Williams (88.0) was one of the better offseason pickups last season, finishing third among defensive tackles with a 12.1 run-stop percentage.

The big question mark for the Raiders’ front-seven is at inside linebacker, where former Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith (58.6) struggled in his first full-time role, allowing the 11th-most yards per coverage snap (1.09) out of qualifying inside linebackers. Curtis Lofton (33.7) played so poorly that he was replaced by a combination of 2015 fifth-round pick Ben Heeney (64.4) and journeyman safety/linebacker Taylor Mays (64.6) on passing downs midseason. Lofton and Mays are gone, leaving Heeney, John Lotulelei (no snaps last season) and free-agent pick-up Darren Bates (64.9 overall grade on just 39 career snaps) to team with Smith. Luckily for Oakland, there are many solid options at inside linebacker in the draft, headed by Jaylon Smith of Notre Dame, Reggie Ragland of Alabama, Su’a Cravens of USC, and Scooby Wright of Arizona.

Smith and Nelson bring a professionalism to the Raiders’ secondary that will help replace that of the retired Charles Woodson, whose coverage grade was the best among safeties last season, and build upon the unexpected bright spot that was Amerson. The acquisition of Sean Smith to pair with Amerson gives the Raiders a formidable pair on the outside, who combined to surrender only 54.6 percent of passes into their coverage to be completed last season. Two of the Raiders’ other corners, former top pick D.J. Hayden (37.4) and safety/corner hybrid T.J Carrie (46.3) struggled mightily in 2015, with Hayden surrendering the most yards after the catch of any corner in the league, and Carrie finishing third among corners in missed tackles. The signing of Nelson, who led the NFL in interceptions last season and surrendered just a 61.8 passer rating on passes into his coverage, in many ways makes up for the failed signing of Nate Allen (41.3), who struggled with injuries and in coverage, surrendering a 118.8 passer rating in just 227 snaps. The Raiders still need to address the other safety position, with T.J. McDonald (48.8) and Allen currently poised to battle for that role, as well as slot cornerback, where Carrie figures to start if they don’t add someone like Leon Hall (78.4) in free agency or improve via the draft.

The Raiders both had and used significant resources this offseason in free agency, and have appeared to allocate those resources wisely. While there are still weak spots along the defense, a solid draft coupled with the continued development of young players like Mack, Edwards, Autry, and Amerson should elevate the Raiders from the 11th-highest graded unit in the league in 2015 into the upper-echelon in 2016.

Like to see all three QBs go in front of us.

Like to see three OTs go as well.

6 positions I don't care about.

let's get some WRs in there too.

Philly and Miami are big threats for EZE also.  I'm prayin' but I'm not expectin'
Yea, I think Philly is going to draft a QB but they very well could have previously thought that they could get one in the 2nd round. Now? Maybe not. They may feel that they need to take that QB or forever hold their peace. I think it decreases the likelihood of Philly taking a non-QB but on the other hand they may not like the QB's left there and not want to reach meaning it actually increases the chances of them not picking a QB. Good golly draft season can play with your head.

Have you guys seen Philly's roster holes? No way they take Zeke top ten. I'll give you Miami, I don't buy the Iggles interest in him even in the slightest. I think the Giants are the biggest threat by far, but if three QBs go top ten, they will be hard pressed to pass up on Stanley if he falls to them and I think he would in that case.

I think the chances of the Eagles picking top 3 next year are high. Chip blew up their roster and then after trying to clean up his mess they blew it up even more. There are so few sure things in the draft. So many teams trying to make you believe they like one guy and keep under wraps who they really like. Trades change the landscape in an instant. One of the few sure bets use to be that we would take the guy with the best 40 time but now that Al is gone- that is not the case anymore.

I am not sure who I am hoping for. From the guys that will be around at 14 for sure, I don't think that there is anyone I would 'pound the table for'.

I can tell you that I don't want Ragland. He scares the hell out of me. I fully am willing to admit that it could be bias from McClain and that in a lot of ways they seem very similar players beyond both being from Alabama. I don't want a thumper MLB that is exposed on coverage. That is McClain and most recently Lofton. Maybe I am being harder on the kid because of McClain and obviously Ragland isn't the head case that McClain was but still.

I also can tell you that I don't want to reach for a CB just because that may still be the biggest position of need. Ramsey will be gone. Hargreaves might make sense but the rest of the Apple, Alexander and Jackson feel like reaches to me at 14.

Not sure. I am sort of leaning towards hoping we can trade down if we can find a partner and get some value.

Eagles were in the hunt for the #1 pick from the Titans, so their desire for their future QB isn't a stretch by any imagination. But seems like the Eagles have more of an immediate hole at RB.

Agree with Hank Moody on this one. Dolphins are primed for Zeke already, and assuming the Eagles don't move up, I think they go O-line (which I think is actually their biggest need) or take Zeke.

Liking guys like Darron Lee or Ragland at our spot, and happy to grab Hargreaves or consider Buckner or even Stanley if 3 QBs go before us and craziness ensues.

I could be wrong because teams do reach for QBs, but I just don't see Lynch going before us.

On a completely separate note, I keep seeing articles talking about how Malcolm Smith struggled last year.  Watching the games I was very impressed with his play last year.  He seemed to be all over the field making plays.

Week 10 Bye week is nice.

Beating Carolina will be tough. Other than that every game is winnable.

hate the At Chiefs, At Chargers, At Broncos finish to the year. Wish one of those could've been a home game at the end of the year.

Then again, At Chargers is like a home game ;)

damn it

1 -at Saints

2- vs Falcons
thats not good.

already slated for every home opener and to travel to New Orleans the week before just isnt going to work.  could have done @Hou also, but its in Mexico.  may look into going to that game, but the schedule Gods just werent good to me this year for a road trip added in.

I am definitely going to Mexico City for that trip.

I am definitely taking my best friend, a girl who grew up in Acapulco as my translator (her daddy worked for Pablo Escobar!)

I am definitely going to get a silver and black wrestling mask to wear to the game.

Viva Los Raiders, Cabrones!!!!

That's an awful lot of miles on that schedule.  5 trips to the East side and all in the 1st half of the season.  Makes a few of those easier games look a little less likely.  A "home game" in Mexico City.  Schedulers did not do any favors for the Raiders, IMO.  9-7

2 sets of back-to-back weeks in close proximity to each other, they will likely stay the entire week between games.  One trip for TEN/BAL and one for JAX/TBB - and all are VERY winnable games as of today, teams with the 1st, 5th, 6th, and 9th draft spots.  This is as good a schedule as they could have asked for.

I'll admit, I didn't think about the option of just staying the week.  That is still a week away from home and out of the norm and those are the games you are supposed to win.  It's the slip-up loss to one of those teams that comes back to bite you in the ### when you end up a wild card team instead of a division winner, or miss the playoffs entirely.  I don't doubt Oakland jumps out to a nice record before the bye, it's just that the end looks tough enough that a slip-up in the beginning could be costly.  I expect a playoff game, just not quite the 12-4 and first round bye some are already counting.

Agree that this year's schedule is very favorable. But that's why they play the games.

As always, keeping our composure on the road, winning the games we should win based on the paper match ups, and staying strong in our division is what's going to help the Raiders achieve expectations.

Most exciting season in a long, long time.

Most disappointed that the GB game is on a Thursday night. I was going to try to make it up to that game but Thursday night makes it not going to happen. Can't get away during the week.
