I think you are underestimating the amount of psychology that goes into coaching NBA level talent. Each situation is different, so the job Phil Jackson did in Chicago was different that that job he did in LA, which was different than the job Pop has done in SA, and Kerr in GS. The myriad of personalities that have to be managed and blended together is a constant finesse, and I don't think that you just do it once, and then it is a cruise control situation.I don't really think the second thing would matter, all the key pieces on that team have been together for years and with Durant for two years. Hard to imagine the wheels coming off in terms of personality conflicts or whatever. It would just be a question of whether/when the loss due to the inability to make adjustments, design out of TO plays, etc would overwhelm the talent gap.
I think you're right on the three different buckets. I think a capable high school coach would be closest to being able to master the Xs and Os first, but the other two they would be in over their head.I also think Kerr has more than a little institutional knowledge on a bunch of nuanced resting, how much of different sets to run to keep guys healthy, stuff like that, that isn't fully appreciated by the general public (and that goes for most NBA coaches which is why I said that initially) if that make sense. There's the 3 big buckets in my mind whole X and O issue, managing players emotionally, and managing their overall health. I frankly don't think a high school coach can do any of those 3 effectively nor the vast majority of college coaches (and frankly I think K,Williams, Self, etc. would have problems as well). I think it gets overlooked that playoffs are a 2 month slog and you have to get your guys healthy to the end.
