That doest read well for State. They lose tomorrow and things get tight with UNC on deck for Sat.
And just the 29th in ACC history. If he stays healthy, he will live up to the hype and will be a high lottery pick in next year's draft. He is the real deal.
He played like a top 3 pick last night. He is incredibly quick for someone his size.
Teams can just clog the middle and force them to either shot a 3 or settle for a long 2. Johnson "solved" some of that last year since his 2-point shooting and Off Rbd was so good, but with 2 of Meeks, Hicks, Bradley in the game the lack of spacing causes problems.
Except they're much better at shooting the three this year, at 36.5%. And that's with a lot of forced shots at the end of the shot clock the last two games thanks to the aforementioned lack of activity in the half court early in the possession. So i think it's more that they're letting teams force them into taking bad threes instead of seeking out good ones like they did in the early season.
Yeah there's a couple other potential contenders I left out (KenPom has West Virginia at 2 for example), was just exaggerating for effect. This is the most dominant conference I can remember. Obviously the recent consolidations make things like this more likely, but this is next level because the middle tier teams are so good.
It's still the same problem though. The percentage is up since Berry and Jackson have shot better this year, but they're still basically playing with only 2 3-point shooting threats since the 2G isn't a threat now. They really need Williams to continue to develop and gets more assertive shooting since that solves the problem.
State played without Yurtseven and Rowan for several games each, suggesting their rotation is stronger now than it was for most of their season to date. State is also playing with 6 rotation players who now each have 2 games of conference game experience, suggesting they will get better as they get more experience. Gott's teams have also tended to get better over the course of the season.
KenPom is an objective system, based entirely on performance at this point I think (early in the season it obviously has to incorporate projections to some extent, not enough data). So to the extent that a team has more as-yet-unused or underused assets than the average team, or can expect to improve more over the course of the season than the average team, that team would presumably be underranked.
State looked good. I feel cautiously optimistic. There was a really great energy in the air at the game. I hope this will be a good year for the Pack.
