You don't think Skipper would rather push a negative Duke story over a negative UNC story?  Just looking at the ESPN.com home page right now...there are 5 separate articles/videos about Allen and ZERO mention of the new UNC letter of allegations.
That is kind of amazing when you think about it. A blue blood program has cheated for decades and these new allegations are huge, but they fill their homepage with Grayson Allen articles. I guess the Duke hate really does sell big time.

I listened to the Dan Patrick interview and Dan asked him if he had witnessed the blow up on the bench would he have done anything different and K said he would have handled the situation differently (although he didn't say exactly what he would have done, but easy to infer he probably wouldn't have played at all in the 2nd half)

Oh boy. Cue the coach k jokes.

Out "multiple weeks" with back surgery.

100% confidence in Capel's in game coaching. If anything, I think he'll do a better job of managing the rotation  (won't play favorites with Matt Jones like k does)

The problem is that the team has obvious internal issues and isn't giving the necessary effort on D. K's absence certainly won't help that.

Can't believe what has happened with this team. I was 100% sure they'd breeze to like 35 wins and roll through to an ACC double and the final 4.

Better joke is Graymond probably tripped him down some stairs, right?

Feel like at this point any time he steps away, could be his last. I doubt it but who knows. Another chance for Capel to prove himself.

I admittedly don't follow recruiting that much but I'm always skeptical of freshmen now and these kids all missed important time. Maybe they round into form come March. But bigs always seem slow to begin with. Add in injuries and stamina issues and this team has essentially relied on the same guys from last year.

No true PG and defense always seems to be an issue with Duke teams.

ACC BB - Preseason Summary

While this is from a State blog, it is a good read. This author will post a few of these posts throughout ACC season to track and ultimately forecast the NCAA tournament bids, and it is interesting to follow. Right now, projecting just 3 teams as being out of the running.

Hmmm...Grayson Allen back in the starting lineup tonight.  Big 1 game suspension for him.  #### that guy and #### Duke!

I guess not Yenrub. Sounds like the conference is gonna be crazy this year, perhaps the team that wins it still has 5-6 losses??

Dennis Smith with just the 2nd triple double in NC State history

And just the 29th in ACC history. If he stays healthy, he will live up to the hype and will be a high lottery pick in next year's draft. He is the real deal.

First time State has topped 100 points in an ACC game since Feb 1991. Credit to VT, they played hard and never quit, but I don't recall when State looked as good against a quality team as they did tonight.

This State team has the most talent of any State team since Valvano was coaching. Should be a fun season.

He played like a top 3 pick last night.  He is incredibly quick for someone his size.

UNC's half-court offense has regressed to 2014ish form.  If they don't get a break the default seems to be stand around wasting 20 seconds and then run a PnR for Berry, ending in either a heroic effort from Berry or a forced shot from a lesser offensive player. What happened to the team that pummeled Wisconsin at their own game in November? That team was a title contender.  This team, not so much.

Love Dennis smith's game.  Have loved it since his sophomore highlight tape came out on youtube.  Every d1 player has a good highlight tape but some jump off the screen and make you say holy crap. Smith is one of those guys.

Interested to see his official measurements.  Could be drafted top 3.

VT with a shocking let down after beating duke....

Also this observation from KenPom is amazing to me: Syracuse and NC State are ranked as the third-and fourth-worst teams in the conference right now, and they're at 51 and 52.  Everyone has known since preseason about the conferences strength at the top, but the middle is even more impressive.

And the conference schedule is going to be a complete bloodbath.  It'll be interesting to see how the tournament committee handles it both from a seeding standpoint and a "total number of teams" standpoint.

Or they could just save everyone some time, invite Nova, Kentucky and Kansas to Brooklyn, and crown the national champion there.

Teams can just clog the middle and force them to either shot a 3 or settle for a long 2.  Johnson "solved" some of that last year since his 2-point shooting and Off Rbd was so good, but with 2 of Meeks, Hicks, Bradley in the game the lack of spacing causes problems.

Last night notwithstanding, Duke has sort of similar problems especially when Tatum is at the 3.  Some of that is "solved" since Kennard has played like a NPOY all year and Tatum can get into the lane, but the spacing has been a problem.

Don't sleep on UCLA. Yes, their D is weak and probably isn't going to get much better. But good lord they can score.

Probably not fair to omit Baylor either although I dont think they'll be a top 5 team at the end.

Except they're much better at shooting the three this year, at 36.5%.  And that's with a lot of forced shots at the end of the shot clock the last two games thanks to the aforementioned lack of activity in the half court early in the possession.  So i think it's more that they're letting teams force them into taking bad threes instead of seeking out good ones like they did in the early season.

Yeah there's a couple other potential contenders I left out (KenPom has West Virginia at 2 for example), was just exaggerating for effect.  This is the most dominant conference I can remember.  Obviously the recent consolidations make things like this more likely, but this is next level because the middle tier teams are so good.

It's still the same problem though.  The percentage is up since Berry and Jackson have shot better this year, but they're still basically playing with only 2 3-point shooting threats since the 2G isn't a threat now.  They really need Williams to continue to develop and gets more assertive shooting since that solves the problem.

State played without Yurtseven and Rowan for several games each, suggesting their rotation is stronger now than it was for most of their season to date. State is also playing with 6 rotation players who now each have 2 games of conference game experience, suggesting they will get better as they get more experience. Gott's teams have also tended to get better over the course of the season.

These factors make me think KenPom would naturally underrank State at this time, since I don't believe it accounts for likely improvement over the course of the season. Curious about your take on that, since IIRC you are a big KenPom guy.

DSJ!

Oh my.  Kid is good.  And not just selfishly good, he makes everyone better.  Going to be a fun year in the league.

KenPom is an objective system, based entirely on performance at this point I think (early in the season it obviously has to incorporate projections to some extent, not enough data).  So to the extent that a team has more as-yet-unused or underused assets than the average team, or can expect to improve more over the course of the season than the average team, that team would presumably be underranked.

I don't know enough about State to know where they fall on the spectrum. Only thing I'd point out is that every team probably thinks it has a case for major improvement as things continue.  Of the ones I know about, Duke will presumably get better as the freshmen are incorporated, and UNC would presumably get better with Pinson's return and Berry back to full strength (although they seem to be moving the opposite direction lately).

State looked good. I feel cautiously optimistic. There was a really great energy in the air at the game. I hope this will be a good year for the Pack. :wolf:

I wonder if the Carolina vs State game tomorrow night in Chapel Hill will be postponed. The snow storm is going to start tonight and end tomorrow afternoon. I think Duke has a home game tomorrow too.

FSU Duke game should be a good one next week. Hate that the State-UNC game got postponed, would have been a good way to spend Saturday night watching Dennis Smith mess around and get a triple double  :gang2:

Amile Jefferson hurt the same foot as last year... :(   Poor kid has played so well the last 2 years averaging a double double and just can't catch a break.
