So Berry has his shot blocked and takes a hard fall out of bounds. He is not on the court. State rebounds and takes the ball to the other end with a man advantage. 7 seconds into the shot clock, the refs blow the whistle to stop play, as Berry gets up. They immediately go to an inbounds play, and Berry stays on the floor. WTF? Is there an actual rule on this?

I had it muted, but was wondering what the hell that was all about when it happened.

Huge win for many reasons - rivalry, RPI, road win, new coach...

State looks like a NCAA tournament team, something no one outside the program expected entering this season.

:wolf:    :pickle:    :wolf:

I like how the announcer kept making a big deal that NC State hadn't won in Chapel Hill since 2015!

That's literally a 2 game losing streak. lol.
I noticed that, too. He could have made the point he seemed to think he was making with other facts, given State was 3-27 against UNC under Roy Williams entering the game... 3 wins in 14 seasons.

There were about 15 times they could have folded in the last 10 minutes and no one would have thought any less of them for doing so. They have gonads the size of Texas.

That's a fun team to watch.  Three wins against Arizona, Duke and UNC going to help them big time on Selection Sunday.

Yes, they not only overcame UNC, they overcame terrible officiating. They had to win the game twice, since the refs made a phantom foul call with 4 seconds left in regulation that enabled UNC to tie.

Following the road win at Pitt, this is the first time State has won back to back ACC road games since 1987. I realize the ACC is a very tough conference, and State has been up and down (but mostly down) over the past 30 years... but that is still surprising.

If that Center could play more consistently, they'd be really tough. He disappears for long stretches.

Another pleasing State fact. This season is just the third time in program history that State has beaten UNC and Duke when both were in the top 10. The previous two times were 1988-89 and 1990-91, which were loaded teams with Corchiani, Monroe, Gugliotta, et al... and Valvano, of course.

So does GT stick with Pastner following the most recent allegations? They didn't make any rash decisions amid the talk of recruiting violations, so I'm inclined to think they believe Bell is a whack job. However, in the current climate, can they push forward following allegations of sexual misconduct ? Even if the school believes Pastner and stands beside him while this plays out through the judicial system, there will definitely be a hit to the program. It'll most certainly be a negative recruiting tool for other schools. This on top of an assistant coach's resignation for alleged recruiting violations and the earlier season suspensions of 2 players. Not exactly building on the progress made in year 1.

UGH!

There...I got it out of my system.

It's funny...at my age...I am still so affected by UNC beating Duke.

My wife saw the clip of the mom walking away from the signing table because her son put on the wrong hat and chose the wrong school.  She said, "I can see that...but how did she not know it was a possibility?"

I told her, "Seriously...I'd walk out too...I'd freaking flip the table.  Hell...I wouldn't have even allowed a damn UNC hat on the table!"

But then I realized how ridiculous I was being...my son is going to school and getting an education...etc.

Then I was snapped back to reality...NO freaking way would I wear his jersey in the stands!

I'd have to make up a generic one or something.

This thing will just never leave me...it's become as necessary as air or food.

Congrats on the win...payback is coming.

It's weird, I did not expect to care very much about the game last night.  It doesn't mean that much to UNC- maybe it gets them a shot at a double-bye in the ACC tournament or moves them up from the 6 line to the 4 or 5 line in the big dance, but that's about it. Pretty small potatoes after the last two seasons. And it's hard to muster any hatred for Duke these days considering the roster turnover and the absence of a real villain or rivalry story line (I don't feel strongly about Grayson Allen like some other Duke haters do).

But sure enough there I was going absolutely bananas for the first ten minutes of the second half, and pacing nervously all over the house for the last ten minutes.  It made no sense but I couldn't help it.

And yeah, payback is most definitely coming.  The roster matchup is a nightmare for the Heels, the home crowd spooking the young Blue Devils and Kenny Williams going crazy from deep is the only reason the Heels stole this one.

Despite all the talent, this Duke team just has major problems. Nobody blocks out  (all the O-rebounds UNC got were because Duke didn't clear out guys going for tap-outs.  Everyone just watches the ball and jumps)  Allen is beyond lost (making Singler's mediocre senior year look incredible in comparison) and Duh-val is the dumbest PG I've ever seen. (and decided to pull the genius moves of re-tweeting a video of his dunk while they were still in the post-game locker room)  And honestly, K looks like he couldn't care less. It really seems like the game has passed him.  In what world did he think the giant lineup of Bagley, Bolden and Carter was going to work?

Yeah, UNC got a little lucky with the Williams barrage, but Duke is just a dumb dumb basketball team. They're not freshman mistakes. They're dumb player mistakes. God I HATE Trevon Duval. Hopefully things will be better next year with Tyus' little brother running the show, (yeah, freshmen are never a sure thing, but his Bball IQ is obvious)  but I'm not optimistic.

How bout the Wolfpack, eh?

8-6 with 4 road wins? With a roster that was pieced together with leftovers?

Impressed with Coach KK to say the least. Never saw the kids compete/fight like this under coach Gott. Couple more wins and we might sneak in the dance! Crazy!

This team won't need to sneak in, barring a complete collapse with 4 games to go. 70 of 77 brackets at bracketmatrix.com have State in right now.

realtimerpi.com predicts State to sweep its remaining 4 regular season games, which would result in a 12-6 regular season conference record. That would be better than any record under Gottfried, who made it to 11-7 once. Heck, from a regular season perspective, that would probably rank as State's best season since 1988-89 under Valvano.

realtimerpi.com also predicts that UNC and Clemson will each lose 2 more games. If all of their predictions turn out to be correct, State would be the #3 seed in the ACC tournament! I'm not holding my breath on that, but this season has been really enjoyable, and I am very impressed with Keatts. Archie who?

Just shows you have absolutely bad Gott sucked.  He couldnt have cared less about winning college ball.

I noticed you stopped Yow bashing. Maybe you can similarly move on and not have to bring up Gottfried every time you post about State basketball.

Eff yow and eff gott.  Two peas in a pod.  She not only shielded him in his personal indiscretions but actually rewarded him with a raise and ext even after he got reprimanded for hitting on an intern in his second season in the athletic dept.  Go back and read my posts on him,  I knew he was a POS from the jump and his actions and the way Yow covered for him was despicable.  Once his results started to slide Wendall Murphy had enough and pulled the plug.  She is truly lucky to still have a job truth be told after all he did and there will be a sigh of relief when she finally hangs it up next year.

Two more wins (tomorrow at home vs BC and should beat GT to death) and they are in, IMO.  They have four wins against top 15 teams (Duke, UNC, Clemson, and Arizona).

Heh... Not taking anything for granted at this point. They *should* win 2+ more regular season games, but the stench of NC State #### is always lingering. ;)

Pretty extreme view.

The entire athletics department is performing under Yow. And that includes the money sports. Gott was not a great hire, but she has hit a home run with everything else she's done.

Obviously I'm not one to argue on behalf of Duke, but can anyone explain to me how Kansas is suddenly the consensus 1 seed while Duke is still a 2?

Duke record > Kansas record

Duke SOS >/= Kansas SOS

Duke RPI > Kansas RPI

Duke KenPom >> Ken Pom (3 vs 11)

Guessing it's just a deal where they don't want two conference teams on the 1 line or think the Big 12 champ should get a 1 seed even though the second-best team in the Big 12 is a Texas Tech team whose best non-conference win is an OT home win over Nevada.  Anyway it's dumb.

I don't know; I found his continual take refreshing in the face of a ton of NCSU fans in here who would get all yelly and shout down any attack on Gottfried no matter how self-evidently terrible he was.

I think part of it is narrative.

The Duke narrative for most of the year has been A) They've under-performed relative to talent   B) They suck on defense  C) Grayson Allen has been a disaster. And for the most part, that's all true.

They have 2 really bad losses on the resume with St. Johns and Boston College.  Kansas' losses all look ok on the surface (although the loss to OU looks worse every day)

I'm getting slightly more positive about Duke in the past couple of weeks (oddly, with Bagley out). They're up to 42 on Ken Pom defense (the zone is helping a lot), Allen is playing better and they've taken some team running responsibility away from Duh-val. They're also starting to use the bench a bit more (although that could obviously change when Bagley comes back)

If Duke wins out the regular season (obviously far from guaranteed, although I do think they'll beat UNC at home) and makes the ACC final, I think they'll end up as a 1.

Yeah I suppose it'll work itself out for them. And I agree, can't possibly deny them if they win out the regular season (which they should) and reach the final of the tournament.

You found his take 'refreshing?' That is a bit extreme IMO, but I suppose YMMV.

Bottom line, Gottfried seasons 1-4 was better than any coach at State since Valvano. A low bar, to be sure, but that contributed to fans trying to hold onto optimism. Myself included. His last two seasons were complete disaster, outside of recruiting. And he was rightfully fired.

@pantherclub has bashed AD Yow for years, basically ever since she arrived. During that time, she upgraded football coach from O'Brien to Doeren, hired Gottfried to replace Lowe and subsequently replaced Gottfried with Keatts, and upgraded other sports programs essentially across the board. State is ranked higher than ever in the Directors Cup (I realize that some people, presumably including @pantherclub, do not care). She was criticized for her financial management of the Maryland athletic department, largely unjustifiably, and she has done a fine job with State's AD budget. @pantherclub is wrong about her.

I'm a huge admirer of Yow.  But Gottfried was a disastrous retread and just as bad a game coach as Lowe was - yes, I said it.  Once his recruiting "caught up" with his inability to coach a game, he fell off completely and suddenly everyone (justifiably) wanted him fired.

I don't remember if it was you specifically, but boy, in those early years, anyone daring to criticize Gottfried around here sure was hollered down fast and loud.

That Kansas thing is ridiculous every year.  They win that weak @zz conference every year of its existence and are gifted a #1 almost every year because of it.

I'd love to see Kansas in the ACC.  That siht would end real quick.

As much as the Duke haters want to talk about Duke being overseeded and underperforming comparative of their seed every year...they really show their blatant hypocritical nature in turning a blind eye to Kansas having that #1 seed every year but never doing anything with it.

It is not disputable that Gott was an upgrade on Lowe. Again, that is a low bar, but he made 2 Sweet 16s. The last State coach to do that was V, and that was, what, 30 years ago?

Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad Gott is gone. But if his hire/contract is the biggest negative of Yow’s tenure, that tells me that she has done a great job.

That wasn't her problem at Maryland. Sure, it sort of became the official story. But her real issue at MD was butting heads with two successful, megalomaniac head coaches who happened to be fan and - more importantly - booster favorites. Gary Williams openly called her a b!tch to reporters and Fridge wasn't any better. She was caught in a no-win there, but some of her choices of battles to fight didn't help her. She was gonna lose every time against Williams & Friedgen (and Kevin Plank).

i don't think the Big12 is weak. in fact, Sagarin has it rated #1.

How we doing here?

Based on what is known so far, there is only smoke. Certainly, the smoke here makes me even happier he was fired. I don’t condone cheating, unlike some others.

Let’s say Gott was involved with money going to DSJ, which seems possible at this point. Go ahead, vacate the 15 wins with Smith, as is appropriate. Gott and his staff were already fired. To go beyond vacating wins seems unlikely at this point, unless the NCAA is planning to impose significant penalties at a huge number of blue blood programs.

All that said, I’m fine with any punishment State gets for whatever Gott and staff did, provided that the other schools who committed similar violations are punished similarly.

Only smoke.  Wow my man you have truly drank the kool aid.  Gott and his crew were neck deep in this and NCSU will be lucky to pivot out from under it without getting dinged on some level.  Whats more disturbing is that your beloved Yow has once again put her foot in her mouth and made things worse for us.  For once in her gotdang life she just needs to ####.  Be quiet and let this play out instead of running to the media showing the letter to the agent.  And then less then 4 hours later yahoo drops the bomb that Gott was working with said agent.  You couldnt write a script this good

Virginia is so interesting to me. We all know they slow it down and play crazy good D. But they don't just slow it down... out of the 351 teams rated on kenpom, Virginia is rated number 351 in adjusted tempo. They are the number one ranked team in the country and play the *slowest*. And there is a giant gap between them and the next slowest team.

I absolutely love their defensive mentality.

Game could end with 70 total points and I'm still thoroughly entertained by the battles, positioning and teamwork.
