2017 Closer Thread: Bad Day To Be A Blake (1 Viewer)

For you Bearclaw holders.......watched the mets v marlins last 2 nights and bearclaw doesn't look right.  was throwing low 90s and his hook was meh.  he actually started throwing change up after changeup on Monday.  then yesterday he gets homered off of by flores and Cabrera in the 8th to tie the game.

If you want to spec behind Ziegler, I think steckenrider is the play here.

Safe to drop Melancon?

Mark Melancon (forearm) hasn't resumed throwing.

Advice: In fact, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area writes that there's "no timetable for him to even play catch." Giants manager Bruce Bochy initially hoped that Melancon would be back "within a couple of weeks," but that's obviously not happening. The Giants' closer had pronator muscle surgery last September and was forced to begin the year on the disabled list with inflammation in his right flexor tendon.

He's still worth a DL slot if your league has them.

Angels brought Middleton in with two on and one out in the 8th, and he finished the game for the save.  Not sure if that means anything but Bedrosian and Parker have both been ####ty so...

Pick up Jarlin Garcia. Even if he doesn't close, he has a really good shot of starting down the road and will qualify as RP.
Garcia pitched 6 no hit innings in his first start yesterday and got a no decision. I guess he's staying in the rotation.

Playing for the Marlins, I predict his win-loss record at year end will be something like 4-14.

Colome is really bad. His k’s were down last year and having trouble this year, he’s throwing his cutter 75% now when two years ago he only threw it 50% of the time. 8.80 FIP, velocity is down, and hitters are pulling everything.

Almost nothing positive here.

Weren’t his walks up last year too?

Yeah. His 4 seam is a below average return pitch, but he can throw it for strikes. In his best years he was throwing a slider, a good one, but dumped that for the cutter. Seems like going back to at least having that in the arsenal would behove him.

I have some shares, this doesn’t look good at all.

Who do you think is next in line?

Whoever it is I don’t want them anyway. Gotta think Romo would get first crack but oof, his fastball is averaging 84 these days.
Big Romo fan for obvious reasons but I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole.

Jose Alvarado struck out another 2 tonight.  Being young and lefty are two reasons he won't get the job but he'll be deep league rosterable regardless if his ratios hold up.

Everybody assumes Alvarado was going to be the closer next year or in July when they dumped Colome. He looks really good. But I would also think they may use Romo this year to build trade value.

No idea if he’s next inline but Alvarado looked absolutely electric against the Sox

Back-to-back six out SVs for the Brewers (Hader and Barnes).  I don't own any shares so it's interesting to see Milwaukee breaking out of the established post-Eck usage pattern for RPs.

I've thrown down the gauntlet to my league mates that they need to throw $5 in a jar any time I beat one of them head-to-head in SV this season. I have Ziegler. That's it.

I figure I can afford to bring the beer to the draft next season. Maybe a case of Carling Black Label, if they're lucky.

It takes about 17 pitches to get 6 Reds out

Hunter Strickland definitely has closer stuff.  He has crazy reverse splits this year, lefties do not have a hit against him all year (0-19).  Righties are killing him but I'd guess those extremes regress to the norm.

I think a healthy Melancon takes the job back, but Melancon hasn't been healthy since he's gotten to San Fran.

Josh Fields got the save tonight with Jansen unavailable, MIddleton keeps trucking along, and Chris Beck got a three inning save for the White Sux.

If you're looking for a deep spec Will Smith is coming back soon for the Giants. If Strickland goes sideways he could get some saves.

You think they would be more likely to keep Watson in the Andrew Millerish role?
Boch has been using Watson pretty consistently as his 8th inning man regardless of L/R or batting order matchups.  Watson has been successful in this role.

Smith will probably replace Josh Osich who has been underperforming as a more traditional LOOGY.

Holland's only baserunner over last 3 outings has been a BB and he pitched the top of the 9th in a tied game last night. Norris' recent workload doesn't indicate that he wouldn't have been available.

Norris throws top of 8 when down 1 run. Holland gets top of 9 with score tied. Think the transition is official.

I'm adding Tayron Guerrero everywhere. He's second to Hader in K/9 and still improving. He now has the hardest  pitch recorded this season (102 MPH last night). 15 of his last 20 outs have come via K and he hadn't allowed any ER's in that time (yes, he has walked a bunch).

He'll either be Hader-lite without the saves or completely destroy my ratios. Either way should be a fun ride.

1.42 WP/9 in 338 minor league innings.
