2017 FBG Album Poll - COUNTDOWN TODAY (Feb 22) (1 Viewer)

Pitchfork has gone a bit Tasker for my liking, but I'll give it a try, thanks.

The method I mentioned isn't a playlist, just a list of albums that are similar to whatever band you like.

I should try the spotify radio again- where they make a playlist based on a band you like. Tended to be limited in previous use.

If we were vampires and death was a joke
We'd go out on the sidewalk and smoke
Laugh at all the lovers and their plans
I wouldn't feel the need to hold your hand
Maybe time running out is a gift
I'll work hard 'til the end of my shift
And give you every second I can find
And hope it isn't me who's left behind

Review:

Jason Isbell  is often cited as being one of the best songwriters in the world. That sort of expectation can be a challenge to live up to, but for some reason Isbell continues to sally forth, upping the ante in all aspects of his craft. His new record The Nashville Sound, his first with the 400 Unit since 2011’s Here We Rest, is triumphant in its topical resonance, but draws influence from the timelessness of lyrical curiosity. Whether delivering heart-wrenching lines on the crumbling of the American Dream, or the crumbling of a relationship, each is given an equal shake, and that makes his songs unreasonably powerful.
This one dominated my listening so much in 2017, I would have given it a 50 this year if the rules allowed.

Yeah Spotify is the best- they even will make a playlist just for you of songs they know you will like based on your listening history.

I remember you looking poppier/dancier and more hip hop stuff than me... Pitchfork is more that direction than when I first started checking out.

That, and your mom.
I would agree with that, except for the part about my mom.

Honestly though, I listen to significantly less hip-hop than I did a few years ago.  A lot of what I listen to is more instrumental, jazz-tinged stuff now.  Pitchfork seems to love plenty of hip-hop these days, but I struggle to get into much of it at times, even the really critically acclaimed stuff.

I usually try to check out a band every day based on a Spotify rec.  It's amazing how accurate it is.  Today was some band called Zula, I'd never heard of them, kinda psych-rocky, reminded me a lot of Sunflower Bean or Jagwar Ma.

It's cool to see how everyone's musical tastes change over time. It's one of the reasons I enjoy these threads the drafts so much. I can't I'magine being the type of person that just listens to the same songs or even genre their entire life like it's some kind of religion.

Agree 100%.  But while I am glad to have significantly evolved my music sweet spot over the years, nothing wrong with throwing down a little hair metal every now and then.   :headbang:

if anything, my taste has devolved the older I've gotten. I've grown to like the dumbest, most straight ahead guitar/garagey stuff... just has to sound right to my ears, either guitar sound, hook or voice-wise, and I'm all in.

I don't recall any hype on this one throughout the year. It is a really strong Beck album.  Surprised/not surprised to see it this high.
Cards on the table, I've found it hard to enjoy his music ever since I found out how much he's into Scientology.   That may or may not be a bad reason to drop someone you've liked for a long time, but here we are.

LCD Soundsystem is like the ******* child of Neutral Milk Hotel for me.

I.  Just.  Don't.  Getit.

last post in here for the night, (does 3 qualify as an ***official*** hippling?) -- but this is stuff that I either missed, hadn't heard of, or only know small pieces of, and I'm going to hunt these down.  Thanks all for the ears and esp thanks to @Northern Voice for the work for this every year.

  • Slowdive s/t
  • Cloud Nothings - Life Without Sound
  • Clowns - Lucid Again
  • Marcus D’s Melancholy Prequel
  • Colter Wall s/t
  • The National - Sleep Well Beast
  • Charly Bliss - Guppy
  • The Feelies - In Between
  • The Menzingers - After the Party

ROCK ON, OLD FOLKS.

I think at some point, our personal opinion of an artist coincides with theory and religion, inextricably so. I wouldn't beat yourself up over not liking him for that. I certainly have had an interesting political take on certain artists I love. If that turns you off from him, then so be it.

Exact same for me.

Still love Sea Change when I'm in the mood

In addition to release radar and discover weekly, I like the Spotify playlist New Indie Mix. You will miss out on Jewels the Kendrick on this playlist; you can decide if this is a pro or con.

Posting my ballot, which for the first time for me in this annual event did not use up all the allowable points.  Feel like I went to an auction draft and left money on the table, but these were the only albums that really resonated with me in 2017.

30 points - Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit - The Nashville Sound
20 points - The Menzingers - After The Party
25 points - Dave Hause - Bury Me In Philly
20 points - Chris Stapleton - From A Room, Vol. 1
20 points - Margo Price - All American Made
25 points - Robert Randolph and The Family Band - Got Soul

Thanks for doing this again NV, always appreciate these threads, gives me a lot to check out. I've submitted lists before but didn't this time, because over the past couple of years I just don't find myself listening to that many full albums. Spotify makes it so easy to pull up playlists and hop around to different artists that I rarely go through an entire album by one artist. Plus the fact I mostly listen at work, so the headphones are coming on and off in between meetings. It makes me a bit sad - I think back on some of the amazing albums I've loved from the past, and it would be such a shame if I hadn't discovered them due to low attention span. I need to refocus on digging into some promising albums and not just hopping around singles.

case in point- I genuinely think/feel/want to like Father John Misty. it always sounds almost there for me, but the too-clever lyrics and song arrangements turn me off in the most irrational, yet profound way. makes me want to punch him and his music in the face.

This was from me. Granted, I'm a huge Toadies homer, catching all of the Vaden acoustic shows locally and see the band fully 3 - 4 times a year, but I feel like this album sounds as much like Rubberneck as anything they have put out since.
Ah, yes, Texas. I think Rubberneck and Hell Below Stars Above are really underrated '90s albums. I personally love a bunch of songs off of those albums. It's not so local to me, but definitely enjoy them.

Thanks, @Northern Voice!

This was my first year.  Typically don't post much but I have been listening to a lot of albums recently so I figured I'd pitch in my preferences.

I'm already enjoying some of the albums that I overlooked but got good scores here (IDLES  ).

Stellar job again, as usual, @Northern Voice I appreciate the time you put into this every year.  Thanks
:goodposting:

One of my favorite threads every year - I need to give back next year and submit a list but I never seek out new music so need to change that this year.

Thanks NV.

I may have to rethink my egalitarian 10 points for everything approach next year although 7 out of 20 made the countdown (8 if you count my negative points for IDLES)

Not you too
No joke - but that’s part of why I love this thread.  I’d never listen to that music in a million years so it’s awesome getting other people’s takes on what they consider good music.  Don’t get me wrong, that album is horrible but I’m still glad I listened to it.

Not sure about where you guys live but around here we are getting bombarded with threats and hoaxes, etc. So many schools under lockdown, administration working like detectives chasing leads, kids being arrested in school. It's wild.

so pathetic.

I'm glad my kids are out of school and my parents (56 combined years of teaching in Milwaukee Public Schools) aren't around to see it.

Looks like NYC picked a good week to have off. Can't imagine having to go though all of that... hopefully as a nation we'll be putting it behind us soon.

It sucks but I actually was a junior in high school when Columbine happened. I remember shooter drills and we got bomb threats and had to evacuate so sadly to me it doesn't too bizarre to me.

We had air raid drills when I was in school :bag:

So back to the tunes...

It's probably due to an aging electorate but this year's poll was pretty nostalgic.  LCD, Spoon, Isbell & WoD are all veterans.   Lorde has been around for five years although Melodrama was only her second album.  I liked all five but to be honest, a few of them have had stronger material in the past.  But I loved that Beck album and should have given it more than 10 points if only to put it above IDLES in the final standings.

IDLES was the only debut album anywhere near the top so I'll grudgingly give them credit for that.
