2017 Raiders - how's the 2018 draft looking? (1 Viewer)

This highlights a concern that we have been glossing over: the Raiders really lack depth at many positions. In particular: Tackle, WR, LB and DE.

There is a serious drop off in talent if a key player gets hurt. Honestly, I am tempering my expectations given the lack of depth and their SOS.
There is a lot of youth in these positions with the opportunity for someone to step up and develop more.

There is some speculation that Conley's issue may be more serious than spin splints
To add to this, Gareon Conley himself said he does not have shin splints, but he isn't indicating if it's anything worse/better.

A couple tweets in a row say "Now I got shin splints lol" to which a fan replied "Ouch those hurt like a b" to which Conley replied "I don't have shin splints lol" and "Lol you good bruh I ain't trippin just a lot of people think they know what's going on when they don't it's funny to me tho"

Thanks for clearing it up bro!

Thanks for clearing it up bro!
The internet makes it difficult to tell if this is sarcasm or not.

My post was intended to demonstrate that there's some amount of dysfunction currently surrounding this situation, and it's interesting (and not in a good way) that our first round rookie, who has been under a microscope for a significant amount of time now, is directly refuting what the GM said literally moments prior.

It's never a good thing when the GM says one thing and a rookie essentially responds with "lol nah bro." Generally, I would expect a rookie to adopt a "go along to get along" mentality, and to understand that if Reggie says something is going on, even if it's not really what is happening, it's probably in the rookie's best interest to agree, for the time being, until Reggie's intentions become clear.

Not only do we have to worry about who knows what kind of injury, but it demonstrates that Conley might also be a social media moron or worse.

Happy to clear up my post for you, bro

Bro in my post = Conley.  I was pointing out that Conley didn't clear up anything after going out of his way to comment.

Sorry about that Moon.

My mistake, I shouldn't have inferred ill intent. The A/C in my car went kaput this morning, and with only 100+ degree highs on the horizon down here in Austin, TX, it put me in sort of a grouchy place, so I think I vented a little on you.

My apologies Doc.

No problem.  I can understand how my post got misinterpreted.

Good write up. I pretty much agree. Smith played so poorly he was getting beat by a 2/3rd string WR and QB combo. I don't care what time of year it is, that performance was pitiful. Conley will be starting in place of Smith very soon...
Dunno where I saw or heard it but it sounds like they are moving him to a safety LB role and tonight definitely solidified that decision.

he is definitely a liability against smaller/speedster  WRs.

Just watched the first series of last night's game and I have nothing good to say about it.  A DPI, missed tackles, a blown coverage that should have been a long TD, third down conversions, a special teams penalty resulting in a first down and capped off with a TD.  Hope it gets better from here.

3. Right tackle Vadal Alexander: The Raiders’ biggest leverage in the Donald Penn holdout is to have their line play well in his absence. Alexander, who would’ve been battling Marshall Newhouse for the right tackle job if Penn was in camp, was beat badly on a play that led to Manuel getting crushed for a nine-yard sack. The Raiders don’t want to see their QBs taking big hits like that.

Huh? I think Penn missed week 17 and the playoff game. The Raiders lost both games.

Sad thing is... Defensively, it reminds of how they played last year. Poor communication, blown coverages, RBs and TEs running loose everywhere. Other than Joseph tattooing David Johnson  (AZ promptly pulled him from the game after that hit lol.) There's not much to get excited about in those first couple of series.

Defense needs A LOT of work fellas before we start talking AFC West Champs.

They are saying if they played well the Raiders would have leverage.

If Penn wants a bump for 2017, that's easy. But I suspect the impass is probably because he wants future guarantees and after this year, the cap sich is a lot more tight. Mack and Amari deals the next two years, plus Mario Edwards if he stays healthy (big IF, I know, but it could happen.) Reggie Nelson and/or Sean Smith could be casultied though, so there is some wiggle room if we want to get creative.

Saw in another thread that Marshawn has been sitting for years, pre-Kaep controversy. I don't have a link though with "proof"

Nelson is getting near the end of his career. He still has gas but I think his time with us will be ending most likely after this year or next at the most. Both because of his $ and because his skill set will be on the decline. Add in that we have Karl and Obi and it just makes sense.

I can see Sean not making the roster this year. I am dumbfounded how badly he has played for us. I don't get it at all. We need to get Conley out on the field and make sure he can play like we think he can and once that happens then Sean just costs too much for us to keep him.

I love Penn but he is getting up there in age. Sure, we can and should pay him more but if he is looking for a long term extension- no, sorry bud.

Del Rio said Lynch told him he'd been sitting for 11 years (which I'm assuming is the length of his career) and to that I call B.S. Be easy enough to find out, I guess.

There is confirmation that he has at times sat and at other times stood during the anthem.

Does that matter?
Not to me. :) But if he's not "standing" for something by sitting then it's silly to sit when he can stand for three minutes and and not stir a needless controversy. Uh, I think that makes sense. We'll see what he says about it. Er, wait...

$9,250,000 cap hit this year with a cap savings of $250,000.

He would count $0 next year against the cap and a cap savings of $8,500,000.
Meh... I'd hope that Conley gets out of the tub and starts before season's end.  Cut Smith as soon as offseason begins.

Thanks for the info as I don't play FFB or follow all things NFL as closely as I did a couple years ago.

Cut him... According to Steve Wyche TJ Carrie has over taken the outside CB spot and Smith had been related to nickel duties.

After June 1 the cap hit is spread over two years.  So it would be about $4.625M this year, with $4.875M savings, with $4.625 dead next.  Same net effect, since we have the extra dead money next year, but more to rollover to neutralize that.

The money's spent, I would rather let it play out.  Unless it gets worse from a behavior/PR standpoint we aren't in a position to be letting guys go.  The guy has talent, we were all celebrating the signing 15 months ago, so even if he's not working how we're using him let's give the coaches a chance to see if they can't get it fixed.  We aren't going to find someone of his talent on the streets.
