It certainly doesn't help him stay. 

If he starts playing up to his contract then they will keep him but if he keeps playing like poop as he has and Conley is as advertised- he will be gone.

We don't need the cap room this year as much as we do next year. 

 
Cut him.. He's got issues. Which to me, explains why he hasn't lived up to expectations on the field. Even if he was defending his sister, stomping a guy out is a whole other level of brutality as opposed to just cold -cocking someone.

Meh. Depends on what the sisters boyfriend did. I may not stomp on a guys head but I can foresee a number of circumstances where I would not hold it against a guy for doing it if they did something to the sister. Now, if he told the sister to go fix him a sammich and he went off.... that is different. 

The reality is that he has not been playing nearly on the level that we signed him to. As he has been playing then yes, cut him.

I hear ya. If there's ever a reason to go bizerker on a guy it's because he's abusing a sister /mom or any family member.  My point being, which you touched on, if you have issues outside of work, it almost always will affect your job performance. It's a huge red flag, in my mind and it explains a lot about why Smith hadn't played well, other than the fact that he just can't keep with smaller WRs. Combine those two problems and he runs the risk of getting cut or demoted.

This just happened July 4th. He did not play well last season. I am not sure if it is whatever issue going on. 

 
While I disagreed with Lynch sitting for national anthem for no apparent reason, I had to chuckle with his responses to the situation. :D

Also enjoyed his brutally frank answer to whether he missed football the last two years: "No." Think it says something about his heartfelt desire to play for Raiders since he's doing something--and putting his body thru another year of abuse--he doesn't really miss.

 
The Raiders have players on defense. Is it the Defensive Coordinator and/or the scheme? How can it be so bad year after year especially with all the resources put toward the defensive side of the ball in the past few drafts and free agency.

I'll be honest I was hoping they would have let Norton go after this past season and would have brought in a Wade Phillips type.

Real missed opportunity not going after Wade.  Norton and the scheme are horrible.  Very little creativity and very little blitzing.  I'm talking about last year, not the preseason, I know no one is going to show all their cards in preseason.

The DC was questioned frequently last season. The talent level seems similar so iwe should probably expect a weak D again.  Carr must out score opponents and never rely on the D to hold a slim lead.

When we see the same issues with miscommunication in the back end of the secondary year to year to points to the scheme and coaches. 

Outside of Mack I haven't seen anybody in their front 7 that I consider an impact player. Sure we have heard a lot of hype about Edwards, Ward and Vanderdoes, but I haven't seen that translate on to the field.

Exactly. That was my first reaction. What players? Other than Mack and Irvin on the edges and Amerson doing a solid job at corner, they have no impact players in the starting 11. Norton and Pagano are easy scapegoats but they can only work with the players they are given. 

Watching Goff carve up the defense was tough to watch. If they have to go into the season with Carrie/Smith as CBs 2 and 3 they are in serious trouble. 

Minus Mack the front 7 looked very weak. I've never seen a pile pushed so much as I did last night. Edwards, Vanderdoes and Ellis got pushed around all first half. Not good at all. And again, Lee and the rest of the LBs looked unimpressive. Bottom line it adds up to ugly 1st quarter stats. Something like 10 1st downs, 140 yds and 10+ minutes TOP. Just downright bad. 

The good news... There was good news! The 2nd team defense looked pretty darn good! For 2 weeks in a row now Luani made plays. He could be the future of the secondary along with Joseph. If we look ahead a year or two the secondary has a chance to be pretty good. Conley, Amerson, Obi, Joseph and Luani. Now that's if these guys develop, we haven't even seen Conley or Obi on the field yet so there's a lot of proving  left to do. But in my mind the secondary has a bright future. Also watch #35 Morrow, the guy was making plays late in the game. Hes kind of a tweener safety/LB but he was making some athletic plays that this defense badly needs. 

Bottom line, if one objectively examines this defense, it's very very young. There's rookies and 2nd year players in 7 of the 11 positions on defense. They've got to get stronger up the middle,  they have promise in players like Vanderdoes, Hester, Autry, Ward and Edwards but they have yet to show it on a consistent basis. At LB it's simple, they're going all in on Lee and James. For an organization run by former LBs from Reggie all the way to JDR and Norton I have to trust their judgment. They see something in these two, I don't know what it is yet, but it must be something. Guess we'll trust the process and wait and see.

Only saw his first run but Lynch looked super quick. The hilites I saw he was giving it his all. He's not just collecting a paycheck. He could really contribute with 10-12 carries a game, perhaps 15.

Can he play linebacker too?

Agreed his carries showed his intent this season. I hope the coaching staff can manage it to a degree that optimizes Lynch to Max effect on minimal touches to keep him at full force the whole season

 
I'll tell you what I hated seeing.... 

Early in the 1st the Ram running back gets stopped but no one takes him down. The offensive line then pushes the scrum an extra like 4 yards.  :rant:

To be fair, Vanderdoes is a rookie who missed all of camp. Edwards is not a true '3rd year player' either. I don't think Ward has played in the pre-season yet. 

 
Sorry C, that sounds more like an excuse. At this point hype has exceeded production for all 3 players. Particularly Edwards and Ward.

On the bright side, move up Carr, Coop, Crabtree and Cooks on yoru cheat sheets. They are going to have to score a lot of points just to remain competitive.

That is very good news. I expect Reggie to give him a well-deserved raise. Newhouse had a pretty solid game vs the Rams. If he can bring that play to the right side Carr may have the type of protection Gannon enjoyed.  :thumbup:

 
I didn't realize this was his last year of the deal, I thought he had 2 more years.  Definitely should give him a bump in that case.

 
Glad Penn is coming back soon. I focused on Sharpe some during the game and he performed pretty well (at least to my untrained eye), I'm sure he probably made some mistakes, but it looked like he held his own out there. We might already have our future LT on the team. 

 
Can Penn's return help the defensive performance somehow?!?!

Let's sign a vet LB or something. And all that money on vet DBs doesn't look like it's panning out so far (not blaming Reggie. You win some you lose some and most/all of us were on board with the DB signings last off-season).

True but Reggie is the king of cap friendly deals and he loves guys who can help young players learn how to be pros.

Will the Cowboys push the Raiders all over the field like the Rams and Cards? I'm guessing probably so.

 
Um...so when does Conley take the field?

same story again...O looks sharp. D looks like a sieve. 

I don't want any starters getting hurt in game 4 but I hope Conley gets healthy enough to get some preseason reps in. 

 
Marquel Lee is lost out there.  The secondary has all kinds of issues, in particular TJ Carrie.  Carrie was a fun story a couple of years ago but it's time to move on from him, he's a complete liability.

 
Didn't think the D looked all that terrible in the first half, no shame in giving up yards to the Dallas offense, but it looks like it's gonna be another season of "start every fantasy TE against the Raiders." I am surprised they haven't attacked that deficiency more aggressively.
