2017 Raiders - how's the 2018 draft looking? (1 Viewer)

Never liked him in the first place.  If Carr goes down we are looking at a total collapse again.
He doesn't seem to be developing. I would say that if Carr goes down we are in big trouble but not as bad as it was last year. EJ is much better than McGloin or Cook and could keep us in the fight to win some games. Are we a contender with him? No. But we could still have some hope as opposed to last year where it was an instant pile of ash.

Agree on the backup QB point, but I was also thinking about the defense which I am not holding out much hope for.  This team does not appear to have the luxury of being able to lean on the defense at all if Carr were to go down.

Hi Raiders fans, couple questions:

- Are there any impressions of OC Todd Downing or what kind of offense he will run this year? What's his background?

- Any impressions of Jared Cook so far? Are you expecting he will be rosterable or even valuable?

I think Downing will try and get the TE's more involved in the offense compared to his predecessor.

I have been very impressed with Todd Downing so far. Him and Carr have a great rapport together. The Raiders think so highly of Downing that they didn't bring Musgrave back even though the Raiders were a very good offense under Musgrave. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a head coaching opportunity in the near future.

I also think that Downing will be more aggressive then Musgrave was.

I'm more upset they cut LaTroy Lewis. Dude was straight ballin this preseason. I'm gonna be even more upset when the Pats or Cowboys claim him.

Yea, a bit of a head scratcher. He seemed to have shown something during the pre-season in a position of need and lack of depth.

They must have really not liked something about Hood. They didn't seem to give him much of a chance in pre-season. He only played in two of the games I believe- nothing amazing but didn't fall on his face either. Maybe they are hoping to bring him into the PS?

Any word on practice squad signings? I expect a couple of our LB projects to be pulled onto the practice squad.

So they all went to waivers but we didn't get any claims. Did we make any? The link above said L Lewis opted to sign with Houston. Did he choose them over us

Also seeing we did not win any claims does that move us up the waiver rank?

No. 1st waiver team gets first pick every time

Apparently this is who we have signed so far

Signed to Raiders' practice squad today.
Two spots remain and these players below are tentatively on the practice squad.
WR Hatcher
WR Whitney
RB Hood
TE Brown
G Simmons
DL Brown
OLB Calhoun
CB Borders

How does a dude (Calhoun) who was on the roster all year last year allowed to be signed to the practice squad?

After the rebuilding project Raider fans have seen over the past few years are you really going to nitpick the cut to 53/practice squad signings this critically?

How far Raider Nation has come.

Kickoff Sunday cannot come soon enough.

Hood on PS makes sense considering he wouldn't see the field at all as long as Lynch is healthy.

What ever happened with Gabe Holmes? It seemed like they loved this guy but he didn't get his chance because of injury. He gets cut and not even on PS.

Calhoun is interesting. I guess they looked at him as still being a guy that has the tools but needs the development.

I am still confused on what the plan is at LB. I think overall Mackenzie has earned the benefit of the doubt (though his record on LB's is less than good) but I am just totally shuked here.

Calhoun and Hood go to the practice squad, so while they may be signed by other teams, at least it keeps these supposed talents closer to the team. Guess we're just giving up altogether on LB this year and going to a 5-0-6 formation?

Mike Nugent, Josh Lambo and Marshall Koehn -- all of whom were cut from other teams -- worked out for the Raiders today. Think this was following Tavvecchio's release, and hopefully not indicating any trouble in Seabass Land.

Sorry to see Atkinson go -- again. The guy has been a bubble sitter for a few years, and while he never flashed consistently, he always seemed to give it his all. Maybe he will get back to our practice squad or get a shot on another squad -- will be pulling for him.

The complicated thing is that it takes two to make a deal.
Ragland was available and was traded for a fourth rounder I believe.  Might have been worth a shot given the massive hole at LB.

Great catch as to why the influx of kickers this year.

Have to think Seabass restructures -- the guy strikes me as a "Raider for Life" kinda dude, and I know there has been some contract angst in the past, it's not as if tons of other teams will be lining up to nab a 39 year old who has been more erratic and injury prone over the last few years. Or as if Janikowski will have a shot to move to another deep playoff contender team.

That said, I think that's more wishful thinking on my part. But Reggie & Co. look like they are playing some hardball with bringing in multiple guys to workout for leverage.

I'm fine with moving on from Jano. Been a long run for him but I think some new blood at the position wouldn't be a bad thing.

Isnt Seabass one if the highest paid kickers in the league? Maybe Reggie wants to use some of that money to make Penn happy.

The timing of this Janikowski situation seems very odd to me.  Seems like this should have been addressed a long time ago.  I'm ok with moving on from him if there is a better option, but the names I've heard so far are just bad kickers other teams didn't want.

Wasn't Lambo pretty solid last year?

Been reading there's a back issue with SeaBass.

If he's not healthy, it makes good sense to save the money.  He's the 2nd highest paid kicker in the league, and has been overpaid since his first contract.  That's what, 16 years?

Per Rappaport:

#Raiders worked out three kickers today [Monday], as K Sebastian Janikowski’s back continues to give him issues. Source said he looked “awful” today.

Didn't even realize he was dealing with back issues. Losing SeaBass would officially feel like the end of an era for me.

The end of a losing era. Al's last mad hatter draft mistake.

He doesn't seem to fit what we want though, much like in Buffalo.  Everyone they have brought in has been a small/speed guy, Ragland is a thumper and probably a 2 down guy only.

Denver Kirkland and Obi Melifonwu to the IR. Both can return in 8 weeks.  Too bad, was really excited about Obi.

Raiders sign Erik Harris (S) and Xavier Woodson - Luster (LB).

Not a great sign when your second round pick is unavailable for 8 weeks, and your first round pick may or may not be able to contribute early this season due to missed camp and practices.

Agree with all of this-- maybe it was out of necessity (his back issues really only started to flare and cause problems over the last few weeks as opposed to earlier in the off-season) or maybe it is a calculated play by the brass to create a ticking clock for leverage in negotiations.

Either way, the team has, what, until Saturday midday to work this out (at that point the $4.05M becomes guaranteed) -- given Jano's overpaid status for multiple years, sounds like this may have been handled in a different way, at the least around Carr's contract signing, to bring in Jano had sell the notion of taking a pay cut for the better of the team. Now that it's forced, can see why both sides may be dug into their positions more.

Bottom line, fine with moving on from Seabass, but at this point, the options they are bringing in don't exactly seem to be at equal talent levels, even with Jano's sometime erratic performance over the last year or two.

If Jano's back is not well, it is time to move on.  This seems to have been handled horribly since waiting for the last minute is rarely a smart move.

I wonder if they waited this long dude to new roster cut down rules that didn't have anyone cut until the recent 90-> 53 cutdown?

It may have been that they believe he is a better fit as a true 3-4 ILB thumper than a 4-3 MLB and the indications I have seen is that they want a more athletic guy in the middle.

The lost era?
