2018 Free Agency (1 Viewer)

Sounds like a Pats reclamation project signing.
I have been thinking that...with Lewis gone they are definitely bringing in at least 1 back...if Burkhead goes it becomes at least 2...White is the only definite right now and he has a defined role...Bolden re-signed for a year but he is much more a special-teamer who can play in a pinch...

Got a good amount less than Dion Lewis - interesting.
Lewis is the top back in Tennessee. People want to talk themselves out of it because of Henry’s previous draft stock. Unfortunately one dimensional grinders just are not viewed highly by the actual league anymore.

I respect the hell out of Peter King, but I think this goes to show that being a so called insider and being in the media means you are in fact not an insider. How many of these did he miss on?

Denver: Kirk Cousins. GM John Elway has made one mega-signing in his tenure: Peyton Manning, in 2012, when Elway was in desperate quarterback straits. To solve this problem again, I say Elway goes big. Cousins isn’t flawless, but he’s got seven or eight prime years left (he’s 29), and has put a premium on going somewhere he can win, somewhere with a good defense, and somewhere he can walk into the building every day excited about going to work. The Broncos, coming off a 5-11 year, haven’t had back-to-back losing seasons since 1971 and 1972, and my bet is on Elway, even at the ridiculous sum of something like $30 million a year, going hard after Cousins to make sure he doesn’t have to keep worrying about the position. In the last two years, Denver has employed the 23rd- and 29th-rated quarterback, Trevor Siemian. Elway’s had enough of mediocrity. One other thing that will play a role: Elway’s willingness to whack a couple of big-ticket defenders, Aqib Talib and Derek Wolfe, from a tight cap situation. It could play a role in clearing enough cap room to fit Cousins onto the roster.

Arizona: A.J. McCarron. This would, of course, break Hue Jackson’s heart. But I just think the alternatives for McCarron are these: Go to Cleveland, and risk the Browns drafting a quarterback high in the first round, and risk being in the same place he was in Cincinnati, behind Andy Dalton, for the next three or four years … or go to Arizona (or another spot that won’t draft a passer high) and be handed the starting job on a team with a playoff defense. Not a very tough choice in my mind. Of course, when you’re guessing, no choice is very hard. Also: I wouldn’t be surprised to see Arizona focus on Sam Bradford and pick a rookie in the first or second round to supplement him.

Cleveland: Sam Darnold and Sam Bradford. The reason Browns GM John Dorsey wanted Alex Smith, or even McCarron or another veteran, is because he wants to be competitive from the start this season. You sign Bradford because you know as long as he stays healthy (Ten days? Ten games?), he’s a top-12-caliber quarterback. But he’s played more than seven games in just two of the last five seasons, and so the Browns won’t be guaranteed anything except some sleepless nights if they sign Bradford. But no matter which veteran Cleveland gets (and McCarron is certainly a strong prospect here), Dorsey will backstop with a rookie, and Darnold, who needs a large dose of development, would be fine with a year or more of clipboard-holding.

New York Jets: Baker Mayfield and Josh McCown. To say that McCown made a positive impact on the Jets in his gap year would be a major understatement. He’s a selfless coach on the field, and he would love to spend 2018 doing what he tried to do in 2014 in Cleveland, when he was there to usher Johnny Manziel into the ranks of respectable NFL starter. We know what happened then, and it wasn’t McCown’s fault. Mayfield is a marvelous talent, if a bit of a wild colt. He’d be a great fit with McCown and new and imaginative offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates. And McCown can play (combined 90.8 rating over his last three seasons) until Mayfield’s ready. Now, here’s the other thing about the Jets. Everyone in the league knows they love Cousins, will hotly pursue Cousins, and could get Cousins. It would not surprise me at all. Bates would be a perfect teacher for him, because he has so much in common with his mentors in Washington, particularly Kyle Shanahan. So if I did this exercise two weeks from now, who knows? I could give Keenum to Denver and Cousins to the Jets.

SIGNIFICANT NEED

New Orleans: Drew Brees and Luke Falk. I can’t see Brees, 39, going elsewhere. I see him playing out his last two or three years (or more) with Sean Payton, particularly with the Saints being on the cusp of another competitive run. Falk? Precision passer (69, 70, 67 percent accurate in his last three years at Washington State) who could use some development. You know who wouldn’t surprise me here? Tyrod Taylor. I think Payton could do very good things with him. By the way, I hear Payton loves Mayfield too. Hard to imagine, though, that Payton and GM Mickey Loomis could move up high enough from their first-round slot (27th overall) to get in position to get Mayfield.

New York Giants: Josh Allen. It could be Darnold or Josh Rosen too, obviously. Much smarter NFLers than me told me in the last few days that they think GM Dave Gettleman will pass on a quarterback to fill another major need at number two overall, and I don’t doubt it. But the Giants have a 37-year-old quarterback who has been average at best for the past six years, and I don’t see New York passing on a good quarterback crop when the chance to get the next long-termer is there. Allen’s the kind of big, strong, developmental player (though his accuracy could be a big issue) who would be a good pupil under Eli Manning and Pat Shurmur for the next couple of years. Or less.

Minnesota: Case Keenum and Teddy Bridgewater. This is too safe. I sort of hate it. Keenum will likely be more inclined to go somewhere with no summer competition for the starting job (Buffalo?), but he also knows his team intimately here, and he knows (or should know) how he’d flourish under new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo. Bridgewater … I have no idea. What do you make of a guy who hasn’t played for two years, and who was not a sure long-term thing the last time he played? Seems the comfort-level play for him would be to stay for an incentive-laden deal.
He got exactly one of those right. And the one he got right was about as much of a no brainer as there is.

Sorry if this was covered already. I haven't gotten caught up on this thread.

Danny Amendola is staying in the AFC East... expected to sign with Miami Dolphins per source.
So the Dolphins let Jarvis Landry "walk" just so they can sign Albert Wilson and Danny Amendola for the same amount of money to replace him? Amazing.

As great as the Pats are, they are also lucky they have three of the worst run organizations in their division.

Why not play til your 45 Tom? You’ll certainly make the playoffs most of not all years.

Interesting signing...nice bang for the buck...can't picture him wanting to go there if Barkley was on his way...would not be surprised to see the Niners focus in on McKinnon...they must not of had too much interest in bringing Hyde back as they have cap space and this is not a big deal...
How do people still make these types of comments in 2018.

Hyde would play in the CFL if they gave him the best contract. There's very few players who actually, genuinely make decisions based on things outside of money. A guy like Brees for example. But just about every one of these free agents is chasing the money, no matter where it's offered or what the situation is. The only way Cleveland's RB situation would have a hint of impact on Hyde's thought process is if anyone else is offering him more or less the same money ... which, by the looks of it, I'm sure they weren't.

Especially a guy like Hyde who hasn’t made a lot of money yet and plays a position with a short life span.  It’s now or never for him to cash in.

To be fair to ol’ Pete very rarely do NFL front offices leak like that Giants have leading up to the draft the last few years. They lie through their teeth leading up to free agency and the draft and they damn well should.

I get it. Which is why I'm saying that he truly isn't an insider.

This also explains why Mel Kiper is really just an encyclopedia of 40 times and not an evaluator of talent with how far off he is year in and year out.

The #Giants are expected to sign former #Patriots LT Nate Solder, source said. They get their franchise left tackle. Huge get.

Very easy...especially if you understand pro athletes...they do not get to where they are by wanting to sit on the bench...do you disagree with that?  Now, I fully agree that $ is the top priority and if Cleveland was head and shoulders offering more I fully get it but it does not appear this contract is anything over-the-top that could not be received from another team in the current climate...if Cleveland does bring in Barkley than Hyde is looking at 3 years of not seeing the field...sorry but I don't think that is something he was eying in unrestricted free agency...

####. Sucks for my Texans.

Curious to see how much after the reported bidding war, unless its just ridiculous money I can't see how the Texans wouldn't have considered matching it. Edit: Looks like it was ridiculous money.

The #Giants are signing LT Nate Solder to a 4-year deal worth $62M, source said, with $35M guaranteed. The highest paid OL in the NFL. :moneybag:

The #Giants went all in on LT Nate Solder, especially after watching Andrew Norwell head to the #Jaguars. They priced out the #Patriots and the #Texans… making Solder the highest paid LT.

Looking at all the movement over the last couple days, I'm having a hard time finding many fantasy relevant players that have had their stock increase substantially.  Here's my short list.

  • Trey Burton (CHI) - From backup to starter on a team that should have plenty of targets for a good pass catcher.
  • Jerick McKinnon (SF) - PPR gold (Bump Dalvin Cook as well)
  • Dion Lewis (TEN) - Should have a more defined pass catching role
The rest are meh at best.  Anyone I'm missing?

Allen Robinson to the Bears with Mitch Trubisky and Sammy Watkins to the Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes.

Ah yes, Allen Robinson.  Out of WR purgatory.

I debated adding Watkins to the list.  I can see the situation being better from the standpoint that Hill may take some of the attention from him.  I'm just not sure if there is enough targets to go around.

Hyde in cleveland if they dont take barkley

Robinson averaged 77-1141-10 with the Jags.  I would say Trubisky isn't putting him in that territory.

Watkins is an upgrade over his Rams situation, but it's a downgraded over what was anticipated a week ago.  He's got to fall behind Hill and Kelce in pecking order.  Mahommes productions remains to be seen.

Not a chance in ppr.  Many will argue Crowell was the better back.  Duke Johnson will still be there and Trod loves to run.  Likely looking at a rookie QB mid season.  I don't see him topping last years numbers enough to be considered an upgrade situation.

I don't feel like these guys all had an increase in stock. They all saw their stock go up after the season with free agency anticipation, but I didn't like the landing spots for Burton or Lewis. If I had owned Burton, I'd have been hoping for Seattle, GB, or New Orleans. Detroit would've been intriguing, as well, assuming they trade Ebron. I think Burton will be the leader of the TEBC in Chicago, but I don't expect the passing attack to be nearly as potent as the other situations I listed and I do expect Shaheen to provide more competition than he'd have faced in those other situations. I mean, even signing in Oakland and releasing Cook would've been better than Chicago, IMO.

As for Dion, after hearing SF and Indy were possibilities, I feel like Tennessee is a letdown. Clear RBBC whereas there was hope he'd be the lead back or at least the majority shareholder of a RBBC.

McKinnon's contract does make him a big winner of free agency, though. It shows a commitment to him on a team without a running back. Still concerned they'll draft someone. Wouldn't shock me if they drafted Barkley because, well, it's San Francisco and Lynch is doing... unconventional things.

AR15 was linked to SF and GB, so signing with Chicago is lukewarm to me.

Watkins going to KC with a totally unproven QB doesn't give me warm fuzzies, either.

I think Jimmy Graham is pretty close to washed up, but if anyone can squeeze value out of a slowing receiver, it's Rodgers. So Graham saw his stock increase, IMO.

John Brown is a forgotten man, but I like him taking over the Wallace role in Baltimore. Nice bump for him.

I'm not a big Cousins fan, but he went to the place with the best WRs so he should see a bump.

Also a very realistic chance the Browns draft a RB in the early 2nd

Your average numbers are wayyyyy off....what you going with some ppg averaged out or something???

Agree with basically all points.  I was strictly looking at the comparison of last season to this and is kind of my point.  I don't think there is one player on this list, outside of maybe Cousins, that went to the preferred spot.

Trubisky's value has gone up immensely.  Added ARob, Burton, and Gabriel in addition to getting White and Meredith back (I know that's not FA - but instead of those guys being 1-2 now they are 3-4).

Mahomes basically traded Albert Wilson for Sammy Watkins, so I think he has seen a rise as well.

Crowell's value didn't go up a lot...but McCown/Bridgewater is actually a huge upgrade from the drecht he has had for his entire career in Cleveland.  2018 Cleveland may be better than 2018 NYJ, but 2018 NYJ should by all means be a better spot for Crowell than he has ever been in.  Sadly.

Here to encourage all non-Bengals fans in this thread to call and urge your team to immediately sign Russell Bodine.

Has anyone been keeping up with OL signings? I haven't been. Just trying to do a little cursory research...

  • Solder - huge loss for Pats, huge gain for the Giants... who now have one offensive lineman.
  • Hubbard - loss for PIT, a downgrade from Joe Thomas for CLE but still a solid player
  • Norwell - huge loss for CAR, nice upgrade for JAX who seem to be trying to replicate the Rex Ryan/Sanchez Jets formula from 10 years ago
  • Also, Cleveland signed blocking TE Fells
Anything else notable?

Interesting, was pretty decent as a backup C for the Chiefs. Nice payday for a former 6th rounder.

The #Texans are the favorites to sign former #Chiefs OL Zach Fulton to a multi-year deal worth more than $7M per year, source said. He should play center for them. Other teams are in the mix, but Houston is the likely landing spot.

9:42 AM - 12 Mar 2018
Updating this as it's being made official $7.5M per, John McClain reporting Fulton will play as a guard.

Was listening to some media folks going on about Cousin's contract being fully guaranteed.

It really is not that big of a deal.  It's only a three year contract.  Every 1st round rookie's first three years of their contracts are guaranteed at least for skill and injury.  Don't have a list but this isn't the first time all or the bulk of the first three years were guaranteed for someone.  A quick google pulls up RB Chris Johnson way back in 2011 as having $30m of the $31m he made in his first three seasons fully guaranteed.

If it was a 6 or 7 year deal that was fully guaranteed, that would be newsworthy.  Hopefully the NFL never goes that route.  While it would be fantastic for the players, it would suck for the fans.  I'd much rather see the players and NFL make sure the handling of injury settlements is appropriate, and stay away from full guarantees.

Gotta assume Florio is taking out his incantation book in the hope of jinxing one of the pre-announced trades into a breakdown.
