2018 NHL Thread: Cappy is happy while the rest of us pray to the ping pong gods for Tuesday night (3 Viewers)

In nearly 38 years of following University of Denver Hockey I have never seen the Pioneers face a gauntlet like they are looking at in the next several  weeks

At #2 - St. Cloud State this week

#1 - and Defending National Champion - University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs - next week

#4 - and big favorite in Hockey East - Providence - over Thanksgiving

#11- and most hated foe - always a war - the Sioux of North Dakota - first week of December

Going to find out how good the young guys are - and how good the youngest coach in Div I, David Carle is running this team.

Get the job done Pios!
Unfortunately, the Friars got swept by your new No. 4 team, the 8-1, Hockey East-leading Cale Makar-men!

cap move for Kings.  Pens rolling the dice on a young winger with a pedigree who is getting weak usage and needs a change of scenery.  decent move both ways.
Cap is equal. Pens retaining money to even out. Last year for Hagelin contract though so maybe LA flips him at deadline.

Would have been great to have the Pioneers play the Minutemen in Denver this season - tons of people would have been watching that game. I watched the Minutemen against Harvard a couple of weeks ago and Makar is doing whatever he wants out there - it was amazing in the difference in talent. Going to be between the Friars and Minutemen I guess - I haven't seen a UMass-Lowell game yet(DU plays at Lowell later).

Pioneers got swept by the Huskies - in identical 4-3 scores both nights. They looked a little lost on the bigger ice for a while but fought back and played well enough defensively to keep it close - but SCSU was the better squad. Maybe in the NCHC tourney we can meet up again and the new guys will be better initiated into the action - and a smaller ice surface might help. Also we are playing with our 2nd string goalie right now(maybe a 1B goalie) and he's doing great. Pios take on UMD at home this weekend - the matchup with the Bulldogs is starting to turn into a war in the NCHC. Then it's the Friars and then the Sioux.

Cap move is to get rid of cap for a strapped team that is circling the drain.  Hagelin goes UFA.

UMass remaining non conference is weak but they should still even out a bit.  they aren't going to run away with it.  Providence will be there like you mentioned.  Northeastern looks like they will be decent and one of BC or BU should be in the mix as well IMO.

SCSU had 64.9% of the shot attempts and 60.3% score adjusted.  one goal games, sure.  but that is pretty lopsided.

Kings obviously get more speed in that trade.
I love it for the Kings. Add some speed and get out of Pearson's contract. He's a fine player but paying $4 million for middling wingers isn't a great plan in the NHL salary structure.

Pearson's never taking the step forward people were hoping for but maybe he clicks and gets back to being a 45 point player in Pittsburgh.

No one ever runs away with Hockey East, but having a sweep of PC already and a split of Ohio State (both on the road) is huge at this point.

UMass also has played only 3-of-9 games at home so far, so they've had to grind out a few games on "smaller" (NHL-sized) ice, as opposed to their 200-x-95 sheet.

(On the flip side, check out Penn State ... 8-of-9 games at home, and the only road game is their only away non-B1G game, which was at Robert Morris.)

agree with all of that.  and like I said at the start of the season I like them as a tourney dark horse and this start will go a long ways towards that.  just saying that from what I’ve seen so far doesn’t make me think any different that they’ll be alone at the top in HEA with Providence and there won’t be a couple other teams in the mix.  UMass is good but not a top 5 dominant team or anything and they’ll still drop games here and there to the middling Lowells, UConns, Merrimacks, and Maine types.

In the Harvard game the play on the ice without Makar was a pretty big drop off - hopefully they have him in bubble wrap going about campus. By the time we get to the tourney it may be all Hobey Makar 24/7 and the horse may not be so dark. I'm trying to remember the last one-horse team that did some damage in the tourney - it does take some balance nowadays.

yes, and he missed a long stretch last year when he got banged up too.  though iirc they did okay when he was out.

LA Kings AHL affiliate Ontario (California ) Reign signed a goalie

@reallisa: Forgot to mention this earlier, G Michael Leighton signed to a PTO in Ontario, per Blake.

Doesn't do anything for the Kings other than salary dump.  They are terrible now.  I would much rather have them play some of the younger guys than a guy like Hagelin.  Much rather of gotten a pick back.

I heard today that they're actually keeping Makar off the ice on Wednesdays for maintenance, whenever possible. Have to wonder how that goes with some of the rest of the team.

Makar and Leonard (Sharks pick, he of the toe-drag goal against the Fightin' Ruds last March) are tied for the team in scoring. They're still ridiculously young, but have been very resilient so far. And it helps that their "veteran" goalie Matt Murray has been among the nation's leaders so far across the board.

So the Caps had Holtby scratched last night and lost Kuznetsov to possible concussion.

Now Lightning take a hit

@DarrenDreger: Tough break for the Lightning. No pun intended. Sounds like Andrei Vasilevsky fractured his left foot and will be out for awhile.

If they deal Hagelin at deadline you still might get your pick.

I don't see him having any value after being in the anemic Kings offense for the next two months.  I guess someone might be willing to take a chance and that is probably what the front office was thinking but why do it the hard way?  Take out the middle move and just move Pearson for a pick.  He is still young and has shown some skills - although he has never really gotten back to form after he broke his leg.

probably because there wasn't a market for two more years of that contract.  it was a dump.  Hagelin was just to even out the cap hit for PIT, he has little to no value.

I agree it was a total dump but the timing was curious to me.  The Kings are a complete mess right now and should be in total rebuild mode but of course that won't happen.  They will piddle around in no mans land.

they have their hands tied with NTC and NMC in several contracts.  nice work, Lombardi.  too bad they gave Kovalchuk a NMC but you probably don't get him without it.  he may want out anyway.

Carter doesn't have one, but probably too late to move him without keeping a big chunk of that deal unless he does some Staal rejuvenation act between now and February.

Very true.  Lombardi built the Cup teams but then tried to keep them too long with too much money.  Crippling for the future.  It will be until 2022 before things are cleared out unless Blake continues to try and win now (which they won't).  Then it only extends the "rebuild"

It didn't help the went with Stevens to follow Sutter.  Needed to go a totally different direction.  The play is stagnant...the PP is absolutely terrible (no movement at all) and for some reason the defense has forgotten how to play defense.  They have almost given up as many goals this year as they did all of last year....and it's not because of Quick being injured.  Defense is terrible.

thought the offense was solid last year with Turgeon in place. very productive years for Kopitar and Brown and Doughty anyway

Brown went back to what he did best.  Crashing the net and hitting people.  He got a lot of tip in goals and Kopitar played like he is being paid.  This year is a totally different story.  The talent is there to be a borderline playoff team they are just playing uninspired and look like the bottom of the league.  They can't stop anyone and they can't score.  Too slow and no puck movement.  It is really hard to watch.

maybe it's not a coincidence that the offense thrived under Pierre Turgeon and went to crap right after he left.

I have no doubt some of that is true.  However, their PP has been terrible for years.  No creativity and no puck movement.  Very predictable.  Right now the PP is a break for the other team and a total momentum kill for the Kings.  It is that bad.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has "an upper-body injury" and will not play against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night, coach Mike Sullivan said.

The Pens did not announce any details about the injury, except to say that Crosby does not have a concussion.

Pens are so bad & matt Murray is even worse. Not sure what happened to him but he is toast. Should have just kept starting Casey desmith. When Murray plays you need 5 goals minimum to have a chance.

#CantWinWithElliott

@charlieo_conn: Welp, Flyers got very good Brian Elliott for about two weeks. Now, it's time for hurt Brian Elliott.

That was the craziest come back I've ever seen as a Flyer fan (in a regular season game). Down 5-1 with like 9 mins left. Now we're going to OT.
