2018 NHL Thread: Cappy is happy while the rest of us pray to the ping pong gods for Tuesday night (2 Viewers)

@TSNBobMcKenzie: Not official but hearing the trade is Coyle to BOS in exchange for Ryan Donato and a fifth-round pick. Details to come.

Jury still is out on Donato. Obviously he has the skills to be a solid goal scorer in the NHL, but he has a lot of other stuff lacking in his game, particularly the physical side.

The B's have given him every chance to crack the lineup this season and he didn't run with it.

Obviously he's still pretty young and it's early in his career, but I'm sure the B's like Coyle's versatility as a 3C or even a 2RW next to Krejci.

We shall see.

Kind of a cool trade for local hockey nerds...Dexter/Thayer, Harvard/BU...can’t think of another like it.

Bs fans may rue it someday but if so I’ll need to remind myself to defend it as I like it today. They clearly think they can win now and this is a solid move if that’s the mindset. #### it.

Jarmo on scouting players he’s interested in:

“I like to go under the radar,” Kekalainen said during a Tuesday phone conversation. “Sometimes you might not see me on the (press box) list. I’ll be in the stands. Nobody knows me. Put a hat on, a toque on, wear regular clothes and go in the stands.”

@FriedgeHNIC

said earlier on pregame before jets game he expects Carl Hagelin to be traded to Washington for Jaskin and a 3rd round pick tomorrow

speed

@billmeltzer: The NHL has suspended Radko Gudas for two games for the high-sticking incident with Kucherov last night. He will miss Thursday night's game in Montreal and Saturday's Stadium Series against Pittsburgh.
Pretty crazy only getting 2 for that.

The Coyle trade seems to be solid for the Bs and I say that knowing full well their history of lopsided trades. Donato may still become a top goal scorer but the Bs needed help now. Good move.

rough development season and he’s already 23.  didn’t really get that much younger here.  Wild always need goal scoring upside though.

I think Coyle is going to be a good fit in Boston and I’m guessing his scoring numbers pop a bit, he’s always had the tools.  in his prime and a good two way player.  better at center.  nice get for the B’s.

pick should have been better than a 5th.  at least Fenton got something in return this time.

Whoa. Seven in a row for Boston and 4-0 on the West Coast swing and then they go up against the red hot Blues next. Can't wait for that tilt.

Nice shootout game tonight. Don't much care for them, but it was fun to watch.

hopefully Fenton can move at least two or maybe all three of Staal, Zucker, and Brodin and really get a legit shot at a top lottery pick.  Maybe Foligno too if there’s a market for him.  I think you hold Granlund especially since he shouldn’t cost as much as expected unless he has a big year next season.

free up quite a bit of cap.  several young guys on cheap deals still and Greenway, Kunin, and Ek continue to look better.  Dumba back off injury. should be able to resign Staal reasonably cheap if desired.  could be a nice reload on the fly depending on what they get back if they go that route.

I can’t make the game tonight. You want the tickets. They aren’t selling online

That should be a great game. Hate the Bruins, but they have my obvious respect given both the talent and the play the team consistently delivers. Hard not to respect them, but man does that team rub me in all the wrong places.

Unfortunately for my Leafs, there is a >80% chance as it stands right now that we're meeting them in R1 of the playoffs. They are our playoff kryptonite, and I'm eagerly awaiting the chance to take a run at them and exorcise our demons.

But let's get there first.

All of this regarding the bolded. The Bruins rub me the wrong way, and I should be their target demographic for fandom (born and raised on the CT/MA border). Marchand licking people was probably the final straw for me. That was just not sporting in any way.

Yeah, the B's are Leafs kryptonite. That comeback a few years ago in the third was a disaster for the Leafs. But things are different now, so if that matchup should be the case, we'll see what happens. Should at least be entertaining.

I would say it’s closer to 95% chance if not more. Neither team is catching Tampa and I think they are both clearly better than Montreal.

I don’t trade Zucker and Brodin but that’s me. How do you get better trading two good young guys?

Wild defense has been getting worse with Hunt and Bitetto. We need more Brodin’s not less.

We do not speak of that day.

But that's what definitely fuels a lot of the hate.

To be fair, whether the Meltdown Of Which We Do Not Speak happened or not, whether I was a fan of the Leafs or not, I think I'd still hate Marchand.

Smith-Pelley will always be a legend in DC, but Hagelin is a clear upgrade. Should provide some much-needed help on the PK. DSP has had the worst Cup hangover of any Capital, and they would have no shot at going deep in the playoffs the way he's playing.

Letting one of your Stanley Cup heroes go, two-thirds of the way through the next season after he signed a hometown discount deal to stay, is a very Patriots-like maneuver. I support that.

Edit to add: So DSP cleared waivers and is going to Hershey. So maybe there's a chance he comes back - hopefully the demotion will get him working again.

they've already begun moving backwards with the trades they've made.  Zucker and Brodin are two of the only real moveable chips they have that should have great trade value with term at reasonable hits.  plus Zucker has a no trade that kicks in soon.  the point is doing it now to maximize 2019 draft picks while stockpiling assets.

I was fine seeing them ride this out up to the all star break.  other than the first month or so they had looked like the same team.  but after this last stretch against the softest part of their schedule mostly at home and the trades/injuries, now is the opportunity to tank into a high pick and stockpile picks and prospects.  will have room to sign a UFA if desired too.

I'm wondering if the Flyers wait until after Saturday's stadium game to deal Simmonds so as not to steal any thunder.

Loads of scouts here, including Pens asst GM and once Wild GM candidate Billy Guerin

I have a season going in NHL 19 and I was only able to pry Coyle away for Donato and a 2nd.
