2018 NHL Thread: Cappy is happy while the rest of us pray to the ping pong gods for Tuesday night (1 Viewer)

sounds like Granlund is going to get moved today.  I think that is a mistake unless they get some ridiculous package back.  at least it should go a long way in stopping all this useless winning.

Sounds like a number of players getting unloaded today.  First big name to go probably Kevin Hayes.  Looking like a 1st and a prospect - which would be fine.

McKenzie:

This potential WPG-NYR deal is WPG 2019 first-round pick, Brendan Lemieux and a conditional pick in exchange for Kevin Hayes. Believe an agreement is in place but trade call not set yet.

If Hayes,  a UFA, gets you a first and a prospect - then this deal wasn't on par.
Exactly.  Holland likes to give out NTC like candy though.  He made his bed here.  It isn't a horrible get, but it could have/should have been better.  I do like the return on Jensen though.

Every time I look at CapFriendly and see Helm and Abdelkader's numbers and terms I throw up in my mouth a little.  :x

Both with NTC too.  The amount of NTCs on this team is just staggering, half the team has some sort of NTC, and it is all the older players to boot.  Stevie Y can't get here fast enough imo.

Lol

On the same day Habs recall Dale Weise from AHL,  they trade for Jordan Weal. Maybe the Flyers can unload Andrew MacDonald on them too. (Not sure if Lehtera could secure a work visa given his current problems.)

@CapFriendly: TRADE:

To Montreal #Canadiens:
F Jordan Weal

To Arizona #Coyotes:
F Michael Chaput

From DD

NYR getting calls on Lemieux pretty much as soon as he was acquired.  Likely moves on the Rangers blue line with McQuaid and Claesson expected to go.

Speaking of Cap friendly - how is WPG going to sign Hayes, Laine, Trouba and Myers for next year and beyond.
Hayes will walk. Laine's asking price likely coming down after this year. Trouba and Myers both question marks at this point, but I assume they aren't keeping both.

Kyle Connor is an RFA as well. If they can get Trouba on a long term deal, he's a no brainer over Myers but who knows if he's willing to stay there.

If they can get Fiala+ or Tolvanen+ it could be okay. Granlund would look so good on Nashville and it seems like even though they really need some secondary offense, they don't trust Fiala/Tolvanen enough defensively to play them more than ten minutes a night.

Leafs recalled Trevor Moore and don't really have a spot for him, so likely at least a minor deal coming today.

Connor Brown needs to be dealt for cap reasons at some point, won't be surprised if that happens.

I'd love to see the Leafs add Radko Gudas, not sure if he's available. Same goes for Colin Miller who has been a healthy scratch lately in Vegas.

Speculation that the Leafs are shooting high (Dougie Hamilton, Jared Spurgeon, Brett Pesce type) but for that to work cap wise, I think Jake Gardiner has to go the other way, unless they can find someone to take Zaitsev off their hands... very good chance this is just the regular Toronto media pie in the sky dreaming.

Seriously though, bring me Gudas.

I disagree with that.  They aren't getting both of them in that deal and neither will ever be as dynamic as Granlund so I don't see how you ever win with that deal.

I've never heard Spurgeon's name floated.  Brodin could be moved though

In his last six games, Montour's TOI dropped from around 22min to 16min per game.  Ducks gave up 7 goals in those 6 games.  Coincidence?  I think not.

Two-Three years from now, I think Fiala will be at the least a better offensive player than Granlund. 23 goals/48 points as a 21 year old is better than Granlund at the same age. Analytics absolutely love him, I think I saw he's one of the only guys in the league in the top 5% in both controlled defensive zone exits and offensive zone entries.

Obviously Granlund having the ability to play centre, be responsible defensively and better history of production gives him a lot more value in the immediate term but there isn't a way they trade Granlund and get better short term anyway.

will be interesting to revisit this deal in a year or two. hopefully a win/win for both teams.

They also went from having Randy Carlyle coaching to not Randy Carlyle coaching.

Michael Del Zotto has taken most of Montour's ice time, I guess he gets the credit for them only giving up those 7 goals in 6 games?

it makes sense for a struggling team who fired their coach to focus more on defense. Kind of silly to blame it all on Montour when a team is as atrocious as the Ducks have been this year.

I'm guessing Hampus Lindholm and Josh Manson haven't played up to expectations this year either.

Granlund came along slowly, the age comparison is irrelevant to me.  but I guess if you want to make that comparison, Granlund had a higher PPG at .65 to .60 at age 21.  Fiala didn't really step up when they had injuries to their top line this year but his upside is still decent.  but I don't think he has anywhere close to the two way game and playmaking ability that Granlund does.  they will look bad if they move him because his numbers have the potential to go way up in another situation.  like Brent Burns deal bad.

“I would have liked to see a decision made on Montour during next season’s trade deadline,” Samuels-Thomas said. “This season has been too messy for an accurate assessment. Like most of the Ducks this season, his season has been up and down, but you still saw stretches where he looked like he could be a 50-plus point producer from the back end. I think some of his ups and downs can be attributed to the former coach not knowing how to properly use his skill set.

“I believe he is around a 50-point guy in the NHL and because of that, I thought it was too early to move a right shot defenseman of his caliber. That being said, the team that drafts you usually knows you best, and maybe his risk wasn’t worth the reward. Montour’s playing style is the future of NHL defensemen. I wouldn’t let that go. Not at 24. Especially when you lose Shea Theodore to protect some of the other defensemen.”

I was trying to match your ridiculous comment about Montour having massive upside.   He's a decent offensive D man, that doesn't hit and makes a lot of bad decisions that led to a lot of 2 on 1's this year.  LOL..  Burke just ripped him on NHLN for being too unpredictable and it's hard to find the right D partner for him.  That's spot on.

Manson has not been great either.   I'll put a lot of that on Carlyle for trying not to be physical this year, which is a lot of Manson's game.

what was your favorite Cliff Pu in Carolina moment?
wow. they just dumped him already? I lost track after the Skinner trade. Wonder what happened to him.

EDIT: looks like just 1 goal and 6 points in 44 AHL games this year. "Ouch." Thanks for Skinner though!

Well, the opposite side of Brian Burke is usually the side you want to be on. His extended Don Cherry replacement audition is viewed as a farce by most people up here.

The Ducks don't have the best history of keeping the right defencemen.

Brassard to Colorado for a third, sounds like

A 2020 3rd from what I'm reading. Just need to avoid a stupid extension - which Super Joe usually struggles with.

Looks like Avs get back a conditional 6th per Pierre - not sure the condition yet.

This should work - looks like they are going to keep the big line separate from here on out - Brassard would look good with Landeskog line as 3rd. Not that line designations on the Avs mean anything now.

Refreshing Twitter with no new posts makes me sad
I was ready to sit down for a nice early afternoon with NHL Network before heading to work, but the power went out around 11:15 a.m. because we're getting 50-60 mph winds all day across Massachusetts, and it hasn't come back on yet.

Laptop and phone still alive, for now. Don't let me down!

And the Blackhawks are doing.................................NOTHING?!?!?! How does Stan Bowman still have a job? Even if they snuck into the playoffs, there was no way they were getting out of the 1st round with that defense. So how did he not have a plan in place in case they lost the 2 weekend, divisional games (which they did). Make a move Stan.......the Hawks need more picks next year!!!

Who do you want them to trade? All the big guys, aside from Kane have no trade clauses and negative value because of their brutal contracts. He turned Schmalz into Strome like 6 weeks ago and that was brilliant. Jesus #### Hawks fans are spoiled.

Hopefully they are trying to move Anisimov and/or Saad. Anisimov has a limited no-trade clause and would be good depth for a playoff bound team. They should have been trying to move him ever since they landed Strome like you mentioned. Bowman should still be fired because of all of those ridiculous no-movement contracts he game up. 5 more years of Seabrook?????? Oh joy.
