2018 NHL Thread: Cappy is happy while the rest of us pray to the ping pong gods for Tuesday night (1 Viewer)

I disagree with that.  They aren't getting both of them in that deal and neither will ever be as dynamic as Granlund so I don't see how you ever win with that deal.

Two-Three years from now, I think Fiala will be at the least a better offensive player than Granlund. 23 goals/48 points as a 21 year old is better than Granlund at the same age. Analytics absolutely love him, I think I saw he's one of the only guys in the league in the top 5% in both controlled defensive zone exits and offensive zone entries.

Obviously Granlund having the ability to play centre, be responsible defensively and better history of production gives him a lot more value in the immediate term but there isn't a way they trade Granlund and get better short term anyway.
FWIW, Here's the entry/exit stuff for Fiala I was talking about earlier https://twitter.com/ShutdownLine/status/1100121021741481985

@treed1919: #CBJ spokesman confirms team is done for day in regards to NHL roster. Panarin and Bob are staying.  Then again, Torts pretty much told us — and my mom — that a few hours ago.

Out: Nino Niederreiter Charlie Coyle Mikael Granlund
In: Victor Rask Ryan Donato 5th round pick Kevin Fiala

What is Fenton’s plan with Minnesota, seriously?

Paul Fenton’s mind is going to be blown when someone tells him that not every single trade has to be one for one

the idea of what Fenton is doing is fine.  like I said previously I personally would hold Granlund and move other pieces.  selling to get younger players that are close and getting cap back makes sense with their situation.  but moving Nino, Coyle, and Granlund for Rask, Donato, and Fiala and a 5th is leaving sooooo much on the table.  all three of those guys are young and have term with reasonable cap on their deals too, which makes it more egregious.  and then the one true rental, Staal, he holds.  unbelievable.  fire this guy immediately.

moving Granlund for Fiala straight up  :lmao:

I guess the positive in not getting more draft picks is that he goes off the board with those too.

Johansson to the Bs
Johansson on Marchand, after missing almost 30 games last year following an elbow to the head that caused a concussion and earned his new teammate a 5-game suspension:

"It was stupid. There is nothing else to say about it. There was no point in doing that. There was no hockey play whatsoever there. It's sad to see that there are still guys out there trying to hurt other guys. There's nothing else to say about it. It's sad and stupid. I hope it doesn't come to him ending someone else's career before it's enough. It's not why we play the game."

"There are always situations where you try to hit someone or try to make a hockey play. Things go wrong. But then there are plays like this where I think that it's got nothing to do with hockey. It's sad to see. I guess I'm unfortuntate to be on the receiving end of that."

Did Marchand elbow him from his Honda?

Absolutely the worst player in the league.

Hey they picked up the inimitable  Chris Wideman too.

Could he be fired in less than a year? I am thinking so.

Granlund for Fiala? I thought the nino one was bad, this totally tops that.

Fenton appears to have issues with valuing what he “thinks” a player can be and trades for them at that premium value he placed on them today.  that’s generally not good business.  he’s like Cav trading for all his Canes and Thornton in magic hockeys.

looks like there was a Zucker to Calgary deal in place too that fell apart.  those details should come out.

Meh...the deal is fine. Granlund never really materialized into what people thought he would.
Do you really feel that way? Or do you just feel any deal is fine as long as they are doing something?  As a wild fan I am pissed anyways.  He has 185 points in his last 220 games.  And he’s actually really good defensively.  The guy we traded for is -11 on a team where almost everyone else is a positive.

That Johnson/Gudbranson pairing is going to be lit. 🔥

Leafs typically start cold, getting outshot by the Sabres by country mile and ceding goals in the first.

Then to start the second...3 goals within 2.5 minutes.

Hutton pulled.

The Sabres shedding Beaulieu today might make Mountour feel better - seems like a vote of confidence that they got the guy they needed if they could let defensive depth go for a pick.
He asked for a trade awhile back. Wasn’t getting any chances to play. Might not play much with Winnipeg either but at least the team will be winning.

They have much better depth on the blueline these days due to guys like Dahlin and Pilut and a healthy Bogosian. Not sure why they can't play defense very well though.

That may be a fair point, time will tell.

Thought his elbow to Hickey was worse. Yet, no outcry because he's not Marchand.

Minnesota get Staal for 5 years, and with productivity for what Canes paid for 2 years.

16 million for 5 years, one of those years 40 plus goals.  Steal.

Time for the rebuild.

so watching Fenton's comments after these deals, they seem to be contradicting and he doesn't have a clear plan that reflects what he's doing.

after acquiring Rask he says he puts a premium on centers and then turns around and moves two guys who can play center for wingers, which he put a premium on.

said yesterday they are too old and slow yet he hasn't moved anyone over the age of 27 (other than Hendricks for a 7th which was his best deal to date!) and has had two deals rumored in place for Zucker (ARI before season and CGY yesterday) who is the fastest player on the team...and again relatively young.

says this is not a rebuild and these moves are for now, despite clearly moving backwards with these deals.  sure Donato and especially Fiala might be great, but they clearly aren't there yet.  the Staal contract meshes with not being a rebuild but if you want the definition of old and slow, Staal would be it (obviously has other redeeming qualities).  another good, cheap deal but if there is another no trade on it they again aren't going to be able to move him easily when they inevitably are not in a good playoff position the next two years.

worst of all he said Rask is a goal scorer with upside and the guy seems to fall in love with his opinions on players so Fiala is obviously cursed now.

he also comes off more arrogant and dooshy than my internet persona and nobody wants that.
