2019 Mid-Year Song Draft - Round 12 Tuesday (1 Viewer)

We are talking about totally doing away with the gimmick last year though, right? So it would have zero to do with where they went to college.
It wouldn't be college and year for sure, that would be ridiculously hard, so either a variation of last year or something completely different I think

Still a month to work it out.

I agree- I thought maybe their existed some confusion. I like a gimmick, just something easier than last year. We can talk more in a couple weeks.

Way behind listening. Below is the best Earth Wind and Fire song in 40 years. Philip Baily covers Curtis Mayfield over some... good music.

Philip Baily - Billy Jack

10? only five to go? 😢

once again I was all over the place trying to decide my next pick... #### at work has me stressed the #### out, so it was either some of the angrier/loud punk stuff to ride with it or the easier going mellow vibe to try to catch my breath... turns out I went somewhere in the middle

8- communication- disq.

9- m5- sports team

had a good ep last year or the year before... love the countdown leitmotif throughout
Sniped x 2.

Love the whole low fi vibe of the Disq tune but esp dig the drumming.

Looking forward to a full sports team album. They are another band blessed with a charismatic singer. I loved ‘Camel Crew’ from last year’s EP; top 10 song of the year for me and I discovered the song and band in one of these drafts.

Disq singer reminds me a bit Andy Partridge

For the football leeg, I was thinking something with initials.  E.g., i you draft Ezekiel Elliott, you'd need to pick an artist beginning with E.

Alright got all caught up after listening to Eephus’ last pick.

Overall thoughts: this seems like perhaps a harder rocking draft than past versions, with fewer pop/R&B/folk/Americana picks, which is probably just due to the participants this go-around. I do like the addition of some jazz that there is zero chance I would have heard otherwise.

New to me highlights that went direct to my personal playlist (in addition to previously mentioned tunes by Kid Kapichi, IDLES, Tyler, and Billy Eilish)

Faye Webster - hit me on the second pass, nice vocal performance thats strikes the right balance between affect and pathos. Plus I’m a sucker for steel guitar.

SWMRS - i can see myself nixing this one later but it stuck out on first pass, i like the mix of guitars and synths in an aggressive tune.

The Beaches - just another all girl band that kicks butt. Have women taken over rock?

Spielbergs - i get a ‘Mats vibe though they don’t really sound like them. Kind of loose but tight at the same time. Good work out tune.

Jenny Lewis - neat album cover too.

I'm the 3rd view?
I might have been the second. A while ago. I read a bit about Empath because of Eephus. They apparently arose from the ashes of the CNY punk outfit Perfect P____ and formed a band with differing influences but with a similar sociopolitical bent. That's all I remember.

Round 11

The Ocean Blue - Kings and Queens

I've been a big fan of these guys since my senior year in college---the year their fantastic debut album was released.

Coincidentally, I was listening to that debut this morning and noticed that it was released 30 years ago today....maybe this belongs in the reasons I'm old thread too...

Every mix needs a touch of reggae.

4. - Sly & Robbie (feat. Mykal Rose) - This Morning

The early 80s records with Black Uhuru are some of the best tracks Sly & Robbie cut during their long careers.  This song with Black Uhuru vocalist Mykal/Michael Rose is a conscious throwback to that sound.

It comes from an album called The Final Battle which is an old stylee sound clash between Sly & Robbie and The Roots Radics.   The two crews alternate tracks with a parade of guest vocalists.  It's a pretty solid collection from a genre that seems to have forsaken the album.

It has to happen once in every draft.

J

I can't explain why I like this outfit so much... 2 piece out of beijing, really stripped down garage/psych, very repetitive/dronish. one of the bigger revelations for me this year, so had to include a tune.

12 down quantity road- Gong Gong Gong 工工工
