2019 NCAA Tourney Thread: Nation has to watch Virginia again (1 Viewer)

Got freebies to the women’s final four tonight so we’re going to check that out. I don’t know much about any of these teams but Oregon is supposed to have a monster player. Should be fun.

I can't name many college coaches who are likable. You like them when they win. And for every up and comer who turns out to be a solid long term hire there are a dozen guys who steer the program in the desert of mediocrity. Cinci currently tied for 5th with North Carolina in current consecutive tournament appearances (9). You know how many schools would kill to go to the tournament every year for 9 straight years? Guy has had a tough go of it in March for sure but they're in the AAC. You're expecting Final Four runs every five years? Once that guy bails there's a solid chance that program takes a nose dive that it doesn't pull out of for a long, long time.

Oregon has a very explosive offensive team highlighted by Sabrina Ionescu who is the point guard and picked as the likely # 1 overall pick in WNBA draft should she choose to go pro.  They aren't the best defensive team but the have 4 starters who shoot over 40% from 3 and their post player shoots over 70% inside.  Baylor doesn't shoot many threes because they don't have to with some dominating post players inside.  

Jealous, I would love to go to the game.

Yes Sabrina sounds awesome but from what I read Baylor has just a completely dominant team. 

I want to stay for the second game but we are taking the kid so I doubt he can hang that late. Sounds like a great game also. Excited to check it out.

C'mon.  You can't name many likable coaches?  That's crazy talk.  People love their school's coaches.  And I'm not saying they need to compete for a Final Four every year.  I'm not even saying they need to make a Final Four.  I'm saying they should be making the second weekend of the tournament on the reg, minus an upset or two.  I'm saying we should be at least as good as our crosstown rival.  They aren't going out and hiring big name coaches.  Getting to the tournament isn't a grand victory.  If that's the goal, great.  But I bet if you'd ask Mick himself, he wouldn't say the goal of the program is to just make it to the Big Dance every year.  That's a stupid goal.

I agree with Nipsey. 

I've been around a lot of big-time coaches, mainly in hoops. Many can be fun to talk to or play a round of charity golf with, but almost all I've met are unbalanced (in terms of priority, if not being outright unhealthy) egomaniacs. I'd be that way, too, if I were successful and had people telling me how great I was all of the time. Most of these guys are, in short, #######s.

Fans love them when they win.

But that's my point.  I don't love Mick and he wins.  My friends don't love Mick and he wins.  Yes, people put up with jerks when they win.  That just goes to show how much of jerk Cronin is that even as they win, fans are mixed on him.

Go to the Syracuse boards and read the comments on Boeheim. They vilify the guy. Idiot fans in every fan base.

I know you don't want to hear it (since you've already said you don't), but be careful what you wish for. 

Dean Smith was hung in effigy at UNC during the '60s. Up until he won it all in '82, there was a very large contingent of college hoops fans who thought he was a failure. There were some  - even afterwards - who would NEVER give him the credit he should have gotten. That said, he was also a jerk.

No. 

I'm saying even the best have critics within their own families.  I honestly don't care enough about UC basketball to know whether Cronin is over-or-underrated. Someone above posted his numbers vs Huggins' and they don't look bad. Huggins caught lightening in a bottle (which promptly went to #### when Martin' got hurt) 25 years ago in a different world. All I know is they keep being relevant.

I think that's the disconnect here.  I don't find them "relevant" anymore.  Making the Big Dance is not a relevant basketball school's goal.  That's a mid major goal.  We can agree to disagree here on that.

Getting your name called on Selection Sunday is something that little schools look forward to.  Cincinnati should strive to be better than that.  Just my thoughts as an alum.

UC doesn't have enough "oomph" to consistently be more than that in today's climate. Neither do many of the schools from major football conferences. Best you can hope for is a Nova mini-run, and you'll need all of the chips to fall right.

I don't know man, it just seems like your expectations are a touch unrealistic. My gut says one day you'll look back and long for this era of Cinci hoops. Aren't the majority of your recruits going to be 2/3 star guys? All you can hope for is to get to the tournament and see what happens.

And you may be right, GB.  Maybe my expectations are too high.  My time there was peak performance, so that's just what I was used to.  But honestly, I'd be ok with taking a swing to be better even if it means striking out a couple times.  

Again, in the Nati, there are two teams.  Xavier and UC.  We at least want to be better than Xavier.  And we can't even do that right now.

Curious of some teams you think they should be on par with that are not in a power 5 conference.  

 
The games tonight were fun. Kid was beat so we left after the first period of second game. You can’t beat the pace of play. First game took an hour and 50. I get that cbs has some extremely expensive bills to pay for the men’s tourney but it still made a noticeable difference tonight. I’d go again.

Very few reviews. Significantly fewer fouls. No hook and holds. 

Baylors star 6'7" center only had 78 fouls all year. There are multiple backup guards playing tonight(men's) that had the same amount of fouls.

The lack of fouls is amazing. At one point late in the game I thought there haven’t been many free throws. Looked up and Baylor had 2 team fouls. :lmao:

The Stanford signee, Belibi is 6'1 and can dunk.  Like real dunks.  Not sure what her measurements are now but she had a 6'8 wingspan two years ago and allegedly has bigger hands than Anthony Davis.  Met her HS coach over the summer and he jokes about how he told her to not even try out for the team as she had never played before 9th grade.  Also a state tennis champion in CO.

I look forward to the final games of the women's tourney every year. It is very entertaining. The regular season is mostly unwatchable though, outside of a handful of games. 

The difference from the top programs to even the 4 and 5 seeds is just absurd. Just look at Baylor's margin of victory prior to last night.  You still see teams with players that basically have two handed set shots at those levels.

Even baylor has a player that you can tell used to shoot that way but jumps now. One of Notre Dame's best shooters mostly shoots from her chest. But those are mostly the exceptions when you get to those top teams. You see tons of really good form. The play is super clean, which I really like. Not as much grabbing. Not as much pushing off. I feel like the refs are mostly more "fair" too. There was a play last night where the TV announcers were complaining that sabrina ionescu got hit in the face and the refs didnt call it. Well she blatantly pushed off right before it was happening. If that was a men's game, they would have called the slap to the face and probably would have even reviewed it and ignored the push off that happens pretty much every time in the men's game.

This is far cooler than the dunk contest charades that have happened over the years. She made 14 in a row at one point and 77 out of 100 total. That is simply amazing.   

They gave Belibi four perfect scores in that powerade dunk competition and she drew back iron on every dunk. When candace parker won it was just a novelty show. Had Nelson-ododa not missed her two handed dunk she would have beaten Zion in the finals. Have them do some exhibition dunks. Its fun to see the ladies dunk. It is patronizing to give them trophies for clearly and obviously inferior dunks though.

I bet in 10 years you start to see more parity. I’m impressed 2-3 teams have caught up with UConn. It was just a few years ago they were destroying everybody.

UCONN is done.  Geno's arrogance in recruiting is finally going to get him.  They have zero size in the last two classes and their top signee was ranked 33rd in the class.  They just signed the best 2020 player in Bueckers, a Nash type with length and appear to be the front runners for Fudd (2021) but there is a huge void down low.

Yea from what I could tell Baylor would’ve beat the hell out of them. It was cartoonish how much bigger they were than oregon.

Yeah, size is a tough thing to overcome and there is just less of it to go around in the women's game.  UCONN will hang around but it will be tough to draw big recruits in that conference if they aren't dominating in March.

Loved how Baylor adjusted to Oregon's one-in-one-out defense.  Flashed the high post and either went high low or drove the back side with numbers.  Surprised the HC didn't get T'd up on multiple occasions.  No way a dude gets away with those antics.

 
That was a pretty cool rendition of the National Anthem.

My rooting interest in the first game is UVA. Mainly because I've had family go there and I've followed them much more closely over the last few decades than I have Auburn. Auburn winning, though, won't break my heart.

I have zero connection to Texas Tech, but I hope they beat MSU by a million.

 
Reminding me a bit of the Kentucky game - it looked like they were struggling and yet you look up and it's close
