2019 NCAA Tourney Thread: Nation has to watch Virginia again (1 Viewer)

If you had told me before the game that it would be a defensive struggle decided by a white guy named Matt hitting a bunch of crazy 3s, I would've felt really good about that.

 
I looked at Texas Tech and who they beat to get here. I thought they went under the radar big time, especially in the media. I won alot of cash tonight.

 
My final four (from one bracket of my 4) was MSU vs TTech, VA vs UNC, TTech vs VA, TTech.

First bracket I've won in years.

 
I’ve never won a bracket. Ever. It’s a great joke amongst my friends. 

All I needed this year is for MSU to beat Tech.

That's an impressive FF.  How many in the pool?  I was able to win my one with 15, and will win my big one with 30 if VA wins Monday.  Considering hedging now and just throwing a couple hundred down on TT to win.

 
Was originally super annoyed that some yoyo in the athletic department scheduled my son's lacrosse game for tomorrow night, but now that we get TT vs UVA, I am no longer annoyed. I might be watching the higher scoring game.

 
For those knocking the UVa scoring pace(I dont blame you), we have scored the most points in the Elite 8 and Final Four games.

Double dribbling isn't a matter of degree. Either you did, or you didn't. And if you did, it should always get called.

This is an image of what I was explaining to you last night.  This is a clear foul on Auburn before the double dribble.  That's why the missed double dribble call didn't screw Auburn.  If they called that play correctly then UVA inbounds the ball with probably 3-4 seconds instead of 1.5 seconds.

And while you may be correct lots of contact doesn't get called in the flow of a game a jersey tug in the open court going for a loose ball almost always gets called.

Virginia plays a winning brand of basketball. It's slower than some others, but watching 5 guys working together like they do is something to see and I like it. It's not boring to me because they are working towards something (unlike the old Four Corners Dean used to run).

 
Also, Bennett's loosened up some. Hunter & Jerome basically have carte blanche to score if they see the chance, shot clock be damned. 

I think Texas Tech is actually going to win this thing, though. I can't believe I just typed that, but I really think it's going to happen.

Only 40. It was $250 for winner, $100 for 2nd and $50 for 3rd.

 
I think it’s going to be a great final. As we’ve learned in college football over the past couple decades, a post season tournament guarantees we get the two best teams in the country playing for a true national championship.

Wait you’re a big enough troll to say when that guy is trying to commit a foul on purpose that a ghost is stretching the jersey out?  Okay we are done here.  Sorry for the discussion.

The player was turning to go get his lost dribble, and the jersey was being grazed by his fingers. It wasn't grabbed and there was no body contact. That's "ticky tack" contact at best, and any ref who would have called it should be ashamed of themselves, especially if they called it in a final four game with seconds left. You are really, REALLY, REALLY reaching to say that's a missed foul call. I won't say you're trolling. I think you really believe it should have been called. Which is laughable.

Grazing doesn't cause the jersey to stretch like that.  Seems like the only troll here is you.

Grazing alone... no. But he was suddenly turning his body to go back the other way, Even without the grazing of the finger tips the jersey would have done that. The grazing of the fingertips just stretched it a little more.

You can see a couple of inches between his thumb and his jersey. It's just his finger tips grazing the jersey.

At best, you might find 2% of experienced basketball refs say they would call that contact a foul in a Final Four game within the last 10 seconds. Yet 99% of them would say the double dribble should have been be called. The other 1% are Virginia fans. 

 
The end of the game was well-reffed imo.  When defenders are slapping and grabbing and the referee knows they're trying to foul, its understandable he made an assumption that the ball was knocked away and the offensive player can gather the ball without losing his dribble. Unless he clearly saw it come off the calf, that's a good no-call, as is the jersey tugging (although I'd have no complaints if either were called.)  The shooting foul at the end was an easy call, no room for argument on that one.

 
It's a lose-lose for refs.  Refereeing a game at full speed is difficult and it's easy to miss/see something in a split second.  If they review the calls toward the end of the game, the call is usually correct, but then people complain about how long that process takes.

Everyone says they missed the DD and it should have been called. They missed it likely because they were focused on calling the inevitable Auburn foul as soon as one happens because everyone knew Auburn was going to foul.

So here they are focusing on calling an Auburn foul, yet despite that focus they let that Auburn contact pass uncalled... as they should. Because it's just ticky tack contact, and no decent ref would ever call it in any game, let alone a Final Four game in the last 10 seconds. 

Just so we can come to an agreement here. Refs sometimes miss calls. 100% of refs would call the DD if they didn't miss it, but 1% of refs would call that contact before the DD if they didn't miss it. 

It's ridiculous that you even compare the two.

Entirely possible that he missed it, which unfortunately is part of the game. It sucks. They obviously missed the DD call, but I think they got the foul on Guy (not Scupper) 100% right.

100% agree.  The DD should have been called.  Brutal no-call.

None of it would have mattered if the refs similarly called the shooting foul right before Jerome picked up his 4th.  It was a clear foul, and it directly led to Jerome making a dumb decision and getting his 4th foul immediately after.    That no-call was game changing.   

If you go back further, Jerome's 2nd and 3rd fouls were poor calls.  If even one of those wasn't called, the 4th wouldn't have been impactful.....because it would have been his 3rd.

So again, the DD no call was awful.  Never should have been missed.  Brutal.  But bad calls happen in games.  It's life.
