2020 (now 2021) Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Closing ceremonies 8/8 | USA finishes with most gold, silver, bronze AND overall medals (2 Viewers)

Great finish in the women's 800 free relay.  3 teams broke the world record. Katie had a great finishing leg to give the USA a silver.

I feel like I always know when the US is a heavy favorite and loses (hello, women's gymnastics).  This was the same but for the Australians.  Even the crazy-jingoistic Rowdy Gaines was only talking about the fight for the silver.

Slovenia is pulling away from Japan in men’s bball, but not by enough to matter in terms of the best second place team if they were to end up losing to Spain. US looks very likely to be in pot 1, will hope to avoid either Spain/Slovenia or Italy in the quarters. Luka is the best player in the tournament

I take it back, Slovenia poured it on at the end and are ahead of the US in terms of point differential. It’s not likely to matter as I think they’ll beat Spain (who will almost certainly not pass the US in pt differential) and the US should beat the Czechs by 20+. The knockout rounds should be pretty fantastic, 5 teams have a real shot to win.

Spoiler Alert - don’t read this if you don’t want to hear about women’s gymnastics.

I’m warning you!

Seriously.

Lee wins Gold in the All-around!!!!!

I agree. Quarters will be amazing. Rooting for Luka and the US.

i read that a german cycling coach implored his racer to catch the camel jockeys or some kind of slur like that.  but when he apologizes, you can’t say he backpedaled.

Women's team foil through to the semis.  Lee Kiefer trying to be the first American woman to win 2 medals in 1 Olympics since 2008.
Disappointing, but ultimately expected result as the US women go out in 4th place.

Ran into the ROC favorites and appear to have given them a good run, losing 45-42, before getting absolutely hammered by a very experienced Italy team in the bronze medal game.

Men's epee this evening should be a quick exit for the men.  Then the final 2 fencing team events - the US' two best chances for team medals - women's sabre and men's foil.

i enjoyed the golf coverage.  it is very interesting that so many golfers represent different countries and so many played golf at US colleges.  liked the italian golf shirt, also liked puerto rico.  without a hat, mcilroy looked more like a rodent than ever.

Every time I see fencing on, I have to ask myself: "Is it epee"?

Really enjoyed Canada v. Brazil women's beach volleyball earlier.  Never would have thought before I tuned in that I would be pulling for Canada in that matchup...

I have yet to watch a fencing match. It seems like each time I try to tune in, the stage is empty but the multicolor rave lights and EDM music is in full effect. It's like the breakdancers came 3 years early and served the fencers off the stage.

best thing is the DJ and his booth at the empty beach volleyball arena.  blaring music after every point for the entertainment of who exactly?

what if they employed this cat and his wall of cacophony at the softball games?  is he loud enough to drown out the inane catcalls from the dugouts?

Watching women's rugby 7's

  • One player for Japan is wearing what appears to be a padded helmet of some sort. I wonder if the other players tease her about it.
  • The mouthguards make everyone look like they have a massive overbite

The 2020 Olympic content on Peacock has been weak but I watched a good documentary on the app yesterday.

Olympic Pride, American Prejudice.

It’s about the 17 African American USA athletes not named Jesse Owens that competed in the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

That came on at the office and I didn't work for like 90 straight minutes.  Terrific sport!  I was riveted by this.  Great Britain vs Australia I think it was after US beat Japan?  Whoa....

Swimming's mixed medley relay is interesting.  I didn't know this was a new event.
I thought something like this already existed? Guess not.

To be clear ... it's one swimmer doing the backstroke, another swimmer doing the breast stroke, a third doing the butterfly, and then the anchor doing freestyle (the crawl)? I forget the exact order, but pretty sure freestyle is last.

Does "mixed" medley mean each team of four is two men + two women or something like that?

Yes, I believe so

Rugby forwards (the big guys) typically wear headgear or tape around their heads to prevent cauliflower ear.  Its much less common in 7's (the Olympic game) because there is so little scrumming and rucking in 7's, but I noticed several male players either wear the headgear or tape.  One of the US guys had a full stars/stripes head gear.  It does seem a bit odd to wear one in 7's, but maybe these players mostly play 15's rugby and are just used to it.  Or maybe they are just super protective of their ears.  Torn ears and cauliflower ear do suck, I must say.

When I was a youngin, the individual IM was fly, back, breast, free and the IM relay was back, breast, fly, free.  Pretty sure that order remains.  Mixed gender IM relay?  Yahahahahaha! Love it.

Is it just me or do the athletes seem extra friendly with each other this year? Kind of cool to see them all congratulating each other after competitions. I know if I just lost a race with a competition on the line I wouldn’t feel much like being genuinely happy for my competitor.

When Suni realized she won the gold for all around, the camera had a brief shot of the other American team members in the stands. It looked like only Jordan Chiles stood up to cheer. Simone, Grace (?) and "Simone's coach" (?) clapped but didn't stand up to cheer. Maybe it was a bad edit job since this was a recorded broadcast from this am.

Just watching this prelim heat for the 400M hurdles and it’s so wild to me that there is somebody who worked his whole life to qualify, then went to the Olympics, did all that prep work and then came in 8th place in the heat and it’s over in 50 seconds in front of zero people. Then go right back home.

I don’t have a point here, was just watching some guy in the hurdles finish last like 6 seconds behind the winner and was like damn that’s rough.

Yes, it's two women and two men.
I wonder how that works out strategically?

Did it look like teams tended to have women doing the same swims? IOW, were the backstroke and breaststroke generally all women, then the butterfly and freestyle all men? I assume the anchors were all the fastest freestyle men available to each team.

Sorry I didn’t notice with that one dude’s wang sloshing around in his ill fitting shorts. Good grief. Need a parental warning.

I wonder what the flipside of this is. What individual sport can you waste the most time doing?
