2021-22 NBA Thread: Bill Simmons furiously recording 2.5 hour long pod about how Boston is still better than Golden State (1 Viewer)

I don't know how you beat the Suns. I think my pick of Suns in 5 may have been too optimistic for Dallas.

I watch the game and find myself repeatedly thinking "Great defense," or "that's the shot you want," and then the shot goes in anyway. They're literally just more talented across any given five guys, even though Luka is the best player in the series. Dallas isn't even playing poor defense. They're playing pretty good defense, on a string, forcing late shot clock low percentage shots even and they still just knock em down.

I think the path for victory is limiting their threes to maintain a big 3-pt line advantage as in round 1 vs Utah (who, by the way, took the first or 2nd most threes in the regular season), and finding a way to get a bit of FT advantage. Right now the game is being reffed super inconsistently, which is hard. They'll let Bullock shove Paul up and down the court and they'll let Crowder molest Luka...but then they'll give a ticky tack touch thing off ball called on Dorian and Cam Johnson can barely touch Luka in the post and those are suddenly fouls. Makes the game very choppy on both ends.

Known defensive stopper Davis Bertans with back to back steal and charge takes. That's another way you could see Dallas winning I guess. If Davis Bertans is about to go Kawhi on people LMAO.

This game is so poorly reffed it's hilarious.

Bullock openly fouls Booker, no call.

Booker slaps Brunson on the head next drive, no call.

Ayton pivots, really doesn't make any contact, offensive foul.

Cam Payne weak moving screen foul.

Chris Paul barely nudges Bullock, charge call.

Brunson does the same thing everyone does every play...suddenly an offensive foul.

Literally 6 of the last 7 possessions were garbage reffing. Equally against the teams at least but just awful. Like #### Secaucus should call a timeout to get their guys together and get a breather it's unbearable to watch.

Can anyone tell me why Dallas, Phoenix, Philly and Miami get 1 day off for travel and Memphis, Golden State, Boston and Milwaukee get 3.

Why Dallas is probably playing their best game of the playoffs?
It's been a great game to watch. High intensity, high skill levels, good coaching, some great shooting from Dallas. Phoenix great defense was exposed some against the Pels and is being exposed here. I'm all in. Love this game.

I don't disagree with any of the bolded...but then it's soooo choppy. It's as bad as a couple of those Min-Mem games.

But it's 60 seconds of awesome basketball and then 90 seconds of crap officiating. Edit: and then another 30 seconds of free throws.

And calling this a flagrant on Ayton is ridiculous. He doesn't throw it, it's a normal move to the basket. It sucks that he connects, you live with an offensive foul but the flagrant calls are ridiculous.

I never got the Paul hate in here.  Sure he flops, etc but he's a great leader and has made some otherwise terrible teams contenders.  Hoping he finally wins one this year.  To do what he does at 37 is incredible.  Still hate what Harden did to him in Houston.

Fourth quarter Dallas offense rears its head again. They go from pinging the ball around to taking turns jacking horrible isos.

Impressive win for the Suns. Went from being a close game to a blowout within a matter of minutes.   The Mavs have a strange dynamic in regards to Luka.  Undoubtedly Luka is great--legit probably one of the best 3-5 players in the world right now.  However--it seems as though the Mavs do tend to have stretches where they go stagnant because he becomes such a focus of the offense.  When he was hurt and missed a couple games in the first round--it forced Brunson, Kleber, and Dinwiddie to play more freely and aggressively.  When Luka came back--some of that aggressiveness carried over and Dallas had a more balanced attack.  Unfortunately--today it seemed like it was completely Luka or bust--and as great as he is--I don't think he can single handedly beat this very complete Suns team.  The Mavs desperately need Brunson and Dinwiddie to go back to playing more aggressively again.

Suns

LFG :towelwave:

Brunson has been completely shut down through 2 games by Book after he torched Don Mitchell Round 1. Got to imagine he'll play better at home.

Yikes. Just saw the Simmons news.

Remains to be seen who got the worst of the trade. Harden is on clear steep decline & will be massively overpaid. Simmons is due, what, 40m/yr for the next 3 years without a clear return anytime soon physically/mentally.

Nets also got 2 first round picks at least.

I was trying to figure out if there was other major event Thursday night or something and i got nothing. So we get a night without basketball.  dumb.

Beyond dumb.  Now you move the two series looking at a sweep in front of the two series that look competitive.  Miami and Phoenix could be resting a full week.

No rebounding is killing the Sixers. They never should have included Drummond in that trade. He was the only backup Embiid has had his whole career that was worth anything. They win last night if Drummond in is there rebounding. Sixers had no plan for the backup center and just prayed Embiid stayed healthy. Doc’s rotation isn’t helping either.

Yea. Terrible over pay. Should have called the bluff or went for a “lesser” player and kept Drummond and Curry. Most people in this thread thought it was too much at the time, but hoped Harden was good enough to be a game changer — after the first 5 games he fell off a cliff.

I’m just going to go out on a limb and say Andre Drummond isn’t worth a 16 point difference.

This.  Drummond literally had 12 total rebounds in the four game series against Horford and the Celtics.  Let’s not act like his presence is enough to neutralize Bam and the Heat.  The reason why the Sixers look bad is because their franchise player suffered a fluke/freakish injury.  Blaming Harden, or trying to claim that trading Drummond away is the reason they are down in this series is grasping for straws. I would bet that this same Sixers team (with a declining Harden) would easily be tied 1-1 with the Heat if Embiid were healthy.

This is all on Morey. He had to ask for the world. He had offers like McCollum with picks, and other offers like it, but no he has to have a star. He got what he deserved.

Is that confirmed?  Are you suggesting Portland was offering up CJ and this year's lone 1st rounder for Ben?  Would have been better than giving up CJ and Nance for Josh Hart and a Lucky's Hot Dog, even though I like Ben Simmons about as much as I do a venereal disease.

Reed and Jordan combined for 9 rebounds last night.  The Heat were crushing with second chance points.  Drummond is so much better than Jordan and had 20 rebound games this season and could protect the rim.  Both games were close at points in the 4th quarter.  Getting some rebounds could have turned the tide.  But we will never know.  Drummond isn't a game changer every day, but he was by far the best option behind Embiid that they ever had, and he did make a difference in games Embiid missed earlier in the year.

Nets also got draft picks and two great role players. Id take the Nets side every day all day.

Suns are scary good. They're definitely the title favorites. Just a complete team. Warriors will need to be on point and even then Pho has the athleticism and length that bothers the Warriors.

TV

No doubt, but is a Saturday afternoon in May really prime time? I live in Milwaukee, am a life-long Bucks fan and I'm really struggling with this due to a busy weekend with work, kids stuff and a ton of stuff I need to get done. At least I have a good excuse to send my wife to cover the all-day grade school track meet in which our 5 grader is competing in the softball throw event.

Harden certainly looks old and slow but in his defense, he's been getting his teammates a bunch of open looks in the first two games.  Not really his fault Danny Green was 1-10 from three last night and that Georges Niang can't buy a bucket.  What seems obvious to me now is that Morey should have given up Thybulle instead of Curry in the Simmons trade.  Thybulle's offense was always iffy, but his defense seems to have suffered too.  I mean Herro blew by him down the court last night.

The only good series in this round is BOS/MIL.  I think GS is pissed off and goes home and puts Memphis in their place to go up 3-1 and may even finish it in 5 in Memphis.

The other 2 series are essentially over already without much hope.  Dallas has a glimmer of hope with Luka and could get 1 game at home, but they are facing the best team in the NBA without a legit #2.  Philly can't win a game without Embiid against the Heat.

Next round though.....GSW/PHX and MIA/(BOS or MIL) will be fantastic.

I think in the Finals we get Suns vs. whoever wins the Bucks/Celtics series, but there is a lot of basketball to be played between now and then.
