2021 College football thread - Auburn’s gotta Auburn. (1 Viewer)

@wilnerhotline: Pac-12 finishes 0-5 in bowl games (plus UCLA cancellation) and has not won a bowl game since the 2019 season

I will say again: McElroy is a money analyst.  Really a bummer he's saddled with fake-enthusiasm-Tessitore as his pbp guy.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit criticized players who opt out of bowl games to prep for the NFL draft and thinks "this era of player just doesn't love football.” All but 1 of this year’s bowl games is an ESPN production. It has a vested interest in stars playing.

Likely first-round quarterback senior Matt Corral for Ole Miss is getting carted off the field with a major injury in the Sugar Bowl this is why a lot of players opt out of these bowl games.

The fan in me would like to agree with Herby but reality is, the upper tier guys need to protect their futures. I love it when a guy chooses to play but don’t blame him for sitting out a bowl game.

100% agree.  I loved that the Iowa 1st round center played...then he got hurt.  I LOVED that Corral played.  Then he got hurt.  Sigh.

[religious joke to follow]

Have you guys heard why Baylor discourages their students from having premarital sex?

It might lead to dancing.

:lmao:  I wish it were earlier in the season so I can keep ya filled in. He has takes all year. I’ll keep updating as he goes along.

If he does other college ball, anything would be great, whatever it is.  Homer stuff is the best.  Like, his take on women's volleyball, that would be better than any SNL ever done before.

If it's only football for college, then let's ride along in the Tide Car with him, or whatever's next.  Bowling maybe?   Well then, F any bowler from, or even around, Ohio right??!!  I'm in.

You're lookin at the #1 fan of Capella's Crazy Cousin right here, pal.

I actually pretty much agree with Herbstreit.

If you're so concerned about your NFL future, there are two options:

1. You need to play well against a good team to bump your stock

2. You probably should opt out after like 4 or 5 games so there's tape out there and then you're protected

And you can get insurance if you're actually a guy who's pretty locked in to a high pick.

The real answer is to pay them. The NIL deals for now I think technically don't allow paying based on performance, but I wonder if "per game played" would get around it somehow.

This will happen soon.  If a sure first rd pick is playing on a team that won`t make the CFP why even play after 5-6 games?  Quit by November and just rest up and prepare for the draft.

When MSUs Kenny Walker opted out of the bowl game it made sense, but was suprising that he even played against PSU in the last regular season game.  MSU was just blown out by Purdue and OSU so they were not going to the CPF.  Walker played on a sloppy field the last game and had been already banged up in the Purdue game.

Same thing with Pickett of Pitt.  Why just sit last game?  Why not last 2 or 3 ? Odds of getting injured are random and probably pretty much the same going into every game.

People making ridiculous amounts of money off of these kids are always the loudest complaining when they make an actual business decision for themselves.

If I were a GM setting up my draft board, I think I might consider which players chose to literally quit on their team.
Easy to say, but I don't think it's the reality.  If you're a projected 1-10 pick scheduled to play in a non-playoff bowl, the GM would probably advise you not to play.      It's just a business decision.  I don't think the Dallas Cowboys are regretting picking Micah Parsons after he sat out a whole season.

Depending on the extent of their injuries, you probably also wouldn't have a problem moving the Ole Miss QB or Iowa center down your draft board.

ETA:  The average NFL career is pretty damn short and you have a better shot at sticking around if you're drafted in the top 2 rounds.  Have to make that money while you can.

I don't have an issue with any player or coach doing what they think is best for them and their families.  Wanna play or coach good.  Wanna opt out or go to another school and coach...good.   But, calling these players less passionate because they are making a business decision for themselves is simpleminded.    Herbstreit got hammered over his comments last night on twitter  "I think this era of player just doesn't love football'  from former players, current players and families.    What does Herbstreit and his ilk want from these players?  Can you imagine if Herbstreit had his way and the players were forced to play in these meaningless scrimmages?  Players giving 50% effort at best and turning these "bowl" games into a further watered down NFL Pro Bowl.

Play if you wanna play, opt out if you want.    If the NCAA doesn't expand the playoffs it is only going to get a lot worse with 3rd and 4th stringers having to play the majority of these bowl games.

Hey, it's almost like these "student athletes" learned to make smart decisions while in school.  Should be a point of pride.  ;)

I agree it sucks from a fan point of view, but everyone should get over it.

I'm sure Ryan Day won't bring up the names Olave or Wilson and their draft potential the next time he's talking to a 5* high school WR.

Jamar Chase and Jevon Holland as well. CMC and Deebo both skipped bowl games too just off the top of my head.

Why?  He's parroting non-sense that should have been out of fashion years and years ago.  I agree with your larger point though.

If I were a GM setting up my draft board, I think I might consider which players chose to take on such unnecessary risks (injury, loss of money) for absolutely nothing (a non-playoff bowl game).

if i were a GM i'd only draft guys who played at Wisconsin. but only if they also grew up in Wisconsin. and also only in the 1st round. i'd trade all my picks to get more 1st round picks so i could draft Wisconsin guys and pay them big money. because they're good guys and they deserve it for being loyal to Wisconsin.

and also i'd only be GM of the Packers.

At least your team would have correctly selected Chris Chambers and TJ Watt when available. 😀

Report on XM was that Corral should be ok and his draft status unaffected.  Good news but not a big surprise...it happens but the chances are slim on late season/bowl injuries affected drafts i think...Tua is a good example.
