2021 New York football Giants (1 Viewer)

Jordan Raanan @JordanRaanan

The Giants are adding Laura Young as the team’s director of coaching operations, per @FieldYates and me. It is believed to be the Giants’ first known woman hire on the coaching side.

Young comes from the Buffalo Bills, where she was the player services coordinator.

@MikeGarafolo: The #Giants are expected to hire #Chiefs QB coach Mike Kafka as their offensive coordinator, sources tell me and @RapSheet. Deal not done yet but that's the way it's headed.

NBCSportsEDGE take:

Giants hired OC Mike Kafka.

Kafka, 34, has been Patrick Mahomes’ position coach and Kansas City's passing game coordinator since he became a starter, garnering praise from the latter on multiple occasions. It's another step towards surrounding Daniel Jones with an elite coaching tree as both Brian Daboll and Kafka were responsible for developing elite talent under center in recent years. The Chiefs ranked fourth-overall in points and passing yards per game in 2021.

- Mike Garafalo, Twitter

I should add that as of now, NBCSportsEDGE is jumping the gun. If he gets the job, Giants will have Daboll (oversaw Josh Allen's rise) and Kafka (guy who helped put together offensive game plan for Chiefs and Pat Mahomes) on offense. It's so great it can't possibly fail!!!

heh...

Doing everything to give Jones a real shot at QB.  Now all they have to do is fix the O-line - which is easier said than done.

At the very least, they'll have to fix the infrastructure for whomever is at the QB position in the future. Need to draft some studs next to Thomas (who I think will improve) that can run and pass block. Solder is cooked and the retreads can't be counted on.

Kafka is the one guy I didn't want the Chiefs to lose. We've heard really good things about him here the last couple of years.  I think the Giants may have gotten a good one here.  Time will tell of course.

Cross, Ekwonu or Neal opposite Thomas seems like the start of good OL

Well that's unfortunate. Why did he want a lateral move like that? I mean Raiders have more defensive pieces and Joe Judge gone maybe he felt he wasn't long for the organization?

Disappointing and kind of surprising to lose Graham that way.  Maybe I shouldn't be surprised. I wonder if it has anything to do with ownership and the way they handled the head coaching search.

After signing Kafka I was thinking this team had a good coaching staff in place.  DC is especially important because Daboll's expertise is more offensive oriented.  Who are the best potential DCs available?

Brian Flores is available

5 candidates to replace Patrick Graham

@MikeGarafolo
Wink Martindale is a very strong candidate for the #Giants as they kick off their defensive coordinator search.

Ian Rapoport
@RapSheet
The #Giants are conducting defensive coordinator interviews this weekend, speaking with former #Ravens DC Don “Wink” Martindale and former #Bears DC Sean Desai today, sources say. There are 4 or so others. The team now has the spot open with Patrick Graham leaving for Vegas.

Adam Schefter

@AdamSchefter

Giants are hiring Eagles director of player personnel Brandon Brown as their Assistant GM, per sources. Eagles continue identifying and grooming young talent - Joe Douglas, Andrew Berry, Ian Cunningham, Patrick Stewart - that other teams recently promoted to high-ranking jobs.

The #Giants conducted a virtual interview with #Titans assistant and three-time defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz for their DC job, sources say. The way this search is shaping up, it’s clear the team is looking for an experienced coordinator.

Former Ravens DC Don "Wink" Martindale interviewed in person with Brian Daboll and the Giants for the defensive coordinator's job yesterday, source confirms, as @PLeonardNYDN reported.

I’m told Don “Wink” Martindale interviewed in person for the Giants DC job yesterday. A couple weeks ago a separate source said Brian Daboll intended to hire Martindale with NYG if DC spot opened. Process ongoing, Steve Wilks among candidates, but Wink still high on the list

*******

@art_stapleton

Steve Wilks has his in person interview today for Giants DC job with Brian Daboll in East Rutherford, per sources. Former Arizona HC, Carolina and Cleveland DC and current DC at Mizzou is 2nd known in-person interview. Wink Martindale was yesterday.

This might be the best front office rebuild for any team in recent history. Wink Martindale is a terrific DC, and I was shocked to see BAL let him go.

I’m not sure what they expected him to do with that MASH unit in BAL, but NY is gonna love him.

Giants hired DC Don "Wink" Martindale.

Baltimore ranked top three in points allowed in three of Martindale’s four seasons as DC, a category the Giants struggled in last year. Martindale also has previous ties to John Mara given that the latter interviewed him for New York's head-coaching vacancy in 2020. There will be a reunion of sorts in 2022 as the Ravens play at the Giants this year.

It's not often a team loses a good coordinator, and manages to get better hiring his replacement.

Giants' defensive staff under new defensive coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale expected to include Rob Ryan and Bryan Cox, per league sources. Drew Wilkins, former Ravens outside linebackers coach, is also under consideration for Giants' staff.

Former Vikings’ assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator Andre Patterson is being hired as the defensive line coach for the New York Giants, per source.

#Giants are hiring Mike Groh to be their WR coach on Brian Daboll’s staff, per sources.
The Eagles' former OC.

Roster Move: The Giants signed WR Austin Proehl.   Yes, his father is Ricky Proehl, the former Rams WR. Austin Proehl had a nice college career at UNC.

*************

Bills 7th rounder in 2018, bounced around since then but was back on the Bills practice squad in 2021.

@art_stapleton

The ties that bind Austin Proehl to the Giants go beyond Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen:

Ricky Proehl, Austin's father, was recruited to Wake Forest by Al Groh, who won Super Bowl XXV with the Giants.

Al Groh, as I'm sure you are aware, is new Giants WR coach Mike Groh's dad.

The Giants say Bryan Cox is the Giants’ new assistant defensive line coach. Last worked in the NFL in 2014-16, per team. And Kevin Wilkins has been added as a defensive assistant. Wilkins worked last season in the same position for the Baltimore Ravens.

@Dan Duggan

Giants LT Andrew Thomas underwent surgery on his left ankle in late January, according to a source. Thomas had surgery on the same ankle after his rookie season. Thomas should be 100 percent by the start of the offseason program (but the team will likely exercise caution).

*****

ugh, never good to have surgery on the same ankle twice.   this guy is literally one of 4-5 players on this team that you can build around.

Can confirm #Giants LT Andrew Thomas underwent surgery in late January. Source says Dr. Robert Anderson in Green Bay did it, and it was a similar surgery to last year, but the belief is this surgery fixed everything that’s been giving Thomas problems for a while. Positive vibes

Listened to Big Blue Banter podcast with Ravens expert Ken McKusik https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wink-martindale-xs-os-all-22-film-study-dive-w-ravens/id1387339234?i=1000550610091

Seems like Wink Martindales defense revolves around man covergae CBs, S and Coverage LBs. I wouldnt be surprised to the Giants trade Bradberry who doesnt fit the man coverage mold and draft a CB in the 1st rd even if they trade back.

There are a lot of intriguing Olineman that can be had later in the 1st rd or early 2nd that I like as much as Neal and Cross

Tackles

  • Neal
  • Cross
  • Ekownu (G/T - Nasty Run Blocking Mauler)
  • Raimann (T - 6'7" Very Athletic - 2 years ago was playing TE and now Might be a 1st rd pick)
  • Faalele - Massive Tackle with unusual athletic ability for his size 6'9" 380 (down from 400lbs)
  • Kinard (G/T)
  • Penning
Guard / Centers

  • linderbaum (PFF - Best Center Prospect ever)
  • Kenyan Green  ( a Beast who has palyed every position -C on the oline)
  • Zion Johnson  (Moving up the Draft Board - has been working as a center at the Senior bowl and doing it well)

Myarick is coming back!  championship.

Paul Sheehy
@ProStarSports
Hey @Giants fans, he's back! Congratulations to former @Temple_FB TE @cmyarick on returning to the G-Men for 2022!

*******

had to look it up but he had more TD's than Golladay and K. Toney combined.   1-0.    Andrew Thomas also has that 1-0 lead.   Even the Dante Pettis has that 1-0 lead.    can only go up from here, i hope.

Trading third and fourth round picks for a pass rusher in his contract year sounds familiar. Hey could then sign him to a big contract extension! Oh wait, we already did that and now Leonard Williams contract is a problem. Not to mention, they can't afford to fit Chubb's $13mm contract into their 2022 cap.

Giants select Kayvon Thibodeaux DE Oregon at 5 AND Devin Lloyd LB Utah at 7 in Mel Kiper's latest mock draft.

Ekwonu & Neal were both gone before the Giants selected at 5
