2021 New York football Giants (3 Viewers)

Giants select Kayvon Thibodeaux DE Oregon at 5 AND Devin Lloyd LB Utah at 7 in Mel Kiper's latest mock draft.

Ekwonu & Neal were both gone before the Giants selected at 5
I would've went with Linderbaum or CB over Lloyd ... Giants need at least 3 Olineman and Bradberry might be traded for cap reasons and he supposedly is not a great fit for Martindales defense

I would take the CB from Cincy over Lloyd if it fell like that

Schoen says he is open to trading Saquon.

I doubt they will find any type of real value for him now (not that I want him to be traded at this point anyway)

Wonder why they think Bradberry would be a poor fit? He's basically younger Jimmy Smith.

Kayvon at 5 would be pretty great. I'd be on board with him and Cross at 5/7.

The thing I'm curious about is if Daboll falls in love with a QB. Seems likely he'll have his choice of the class if he does.

I like the idea of bringing in Trubisky as a backup / competition for Jones.  A rookie QB or any QB is going to be shell schocked if the Giants dont address the Oline.

K. Rudolph

Kyle Rudolph was scheduled to count $7.4M vs cap this year. The cap-strapped Giants save $5M with the move, even if it includes $2.4M in dead money.

Another terrible Dave Gettleman signing, especially given his foot required surgery after signing. Basically signed damaged goods.

*********

D. Booker

The Giants are cutting RB Devontae Booker, per source. The move creates $2.1M in cap savings while leaving $1M in dead money. Booker had 593 rushing yards last season, which tied with Saquon Barkley for the team lead.

7 million down, 33 left to go

Maybe it is as simple as his contract is a poor fit, no matter how well his play on the field would work. Let's face it, this is a multi-year rebuild, and with Schoen saying that he doesn't want to restructure contracts he's going to take all the pain this year. Which mean lots of dead money, most likely another high draft pick and then try to compete in 2023. That also allows the room this year to figure out if Jones is their guy without worrying overmuch if they win the games.

FWIW, I'm hoping someone else falls i love with a QB, and they can trade back to say the middle of the first, pick up another extra 1st round pick, draft Cross at 7 and then take Linderbaum with the trade back pick. Hey i can dream can't I?

Seems realistic to me

Giants are asking Sterling Shepard to take a huge pay cut

It is unclear exactly how much Shepard, 29, was asked to reduce his salary from $8.475 million, but it is expected to be close to the league minimum for a player with six years of service time ($1.035 million). Shepard has two years remaining on his deal, but players who accept pay cuts often want to reach free agency sooner as a trade-off, on the hope of recouping lost wages.

Shepard is said to be considering the pay cut as he ponders his options. It is possible he could be ready to go for the start of the regular season, but he is unlikely to be available for spring camp

Giants will hold mandatory mini-camp prior to the draft

"The New York Giants have welcomed in a new general manager (Joe Schoen) and new head coach (Brian Daboll) and because of that, their offseason workout program will begin a bit earlier this year.

Giants players will return to East Rutherford on April 4 and the team will then conduct a mandatory minicamp one week prior to the 2022 NFL draft, per league rules.

The minicamp will provide Schoen and Daboll their first on-field look at the players they are inheriting, including quarterback Daniel Jones. It will also help them reach a conclusion on Jones’ fifth-year option......"

Dan Duggan ✔ @DDuggan21

Surveying sources in Indy, the consensus trade value for James Bradberry is a third-round pick and Saquon Barkley is a fourth-round pick. I'm skeptical that the Giants will pull the trigger on a Saquon trade.

Bradberry is in the opposite position of Sterling Shepard in terms of leverage. He's still young, viewed as a high-quality player and plays a premium position. Whether he's extended, traded or released, Bradberry is in a good spot.

Watching the NFL Combine TEs ... Would love the Giants to nab Trey McBride in the 2nd if he is available. Guys going to be a stud

looks to be a deep draft for TE's.   another need for this team, amazing how many we have.   my guess is we use one of the 3rd rounders on one.

Sauce Gardner in play?

"Sauce Gardner doesn’t drink. He doesn’t smoke, not even an occasional victory cigar. He loves his mom and appreciates her sacrifices. He made it out of the mean streets of Detroit. He loves press coverage. He’s well-spoken and confident without an ounce of braggadocio. Oh, and he has a great nickname.

Listening to him speak early Saturday morning at the NFL Scouting Combine, it was difficult not to think about how perfectly Gardner would fit into Wink Martindale’s defense with the New York Giants. Also in the Giants locker room, where new GM Joe Schoen is placing a premium on “smart, tough, dependable” players..."

The New York Giants are signing OT Matt Gono to a one-year deal, per source. Released by the Falcons in January after missing 2021 due to injury, Gono is healthy and brings high upside to an O-line that needs it.

Just for comparison. Daniel and Mitch's first three years:

Daniel                                                        Mitch

8,398 yds                                                  8,554 yds

I'll take anything that creates competition but I fail to see the High Upside with this guy

I am a big believer that a lot of these talented young QBs fail because of the environment and lack of talent around them. I think both of these guys could be winners in the right situation. Trubisky was 11-3 in his 2nd season as a starter before the team went to #### and Jones has been in the worst situation imaginable since he was drafted.

I like Jones but I think Trubisky is more talented ... I really hope this happens ...It's a win win

how much you think Mitch is gonna cost?   we've only shedded 7mm of the 40mm Schoen wants gone.

He was on a 1 year $2.5m with Buf last year but supposedly he is looking for $10m ... not sure how they are going to do it but I hope they figure something out.

There’s teams built to win that need a starting QB, like Indianapolis and Pittsburgh, I’d have to imagine that they’ll pay more than the Giants should given their situation. Isn’t this season about getting the cap back in shape - so why spend money on a backup/competition that at best would be a small upgrade over Jones?

Because they have to figure out if they are going to need a QB next season this year. If jones fails maybe Trubisky could be that guy.

Titans releasing guard Roger Saffold...33 years old.

Art Stapleton

Giants OL coach Bobby Johnson was Rodger Saffold's position coach at Indiana.

Market likely too steep, but worth pointing out.

The longest-tenured player on the roster is sticking for a seventh season.

Love it. Can't lose the only weapon Jones feels comfortable dumping off to. Also hearing a lot more Sauce Garder if the two big OL are gone.

Pro Football Rumors:

Riley Dixon is hitting free agency. The Giants have cut their veteran punter, reports ESPN’s Jordan Raanan (via Twitter). The move will save the Giants $2.8MM against the cap.

Dixon has spent the past four seasons in New York. His numbers took a bit of a step back in 2021, as the 28-year-old’s average punt length was at a career-low 44.4 yards. However, he did punt the ball 74 times, his highest total since 2016.

The Syracuse product was a seventh-round by the Broncos in 2016. He spent two seasons with Denver, including a 2016 campaign where he earned PFWA All-Rookie Team honors. He was traded to the Giants in 2018 for a 2019 conditional seventh-round draft pick.

10 Free Agent Names to watch - Ralph Vacchiano

QB Mitchell Trubisky
He’d be their preferred choice as a backup to Jones, but he’s likely to find more money and a better chance to play elsewhere. If not, he might be OK reuniting with Brian Daboll.

QB Marcus Mariota
Several NFL agents said the Giants are looking for a mobile backup QB with starting experience. Mariota, who hasn’t really played since 2019, figures to have fewer options than Trubisky and could be a less expensive Plan B.

G Jon Feliciano
The 30-year-old was cut by the Bills in a cost-cutting move. He’s not likely to find a big market and he has a history with new Giants offensive line coach Bobby Johnson, both from their time with Buffalo and the Raiders.

G Ike Boettger
He had replaced Feliciano in the starting lineup in Buffalo, but then tore his Achilles late in the season. That’s a tough injury for a 6-6, 313-pounder. But for the Giants that means he could be had for a minimum deal.

G Andrew Wylie
A terrific, under-the-radar player who can go between guard and tackle. New Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka knows his value from their days together with the Chiefs.

CB Anthony Averett
The Ravens’ secondary wasn’t good last year, but this 27-year-old did have three interceptions and new defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale is going to want some guys he knows and that know his scheme.

CB Tavon Young
Another Ravens cornerback, recently cut, Young had a down year last year, but it was his first returning from a torn ACL. He’s still 27 and presumably will be better when fully healthy. Martindale figures to want at least one of his old corners, especially if Bradberry doesn’t come back.

TE Mo Alie-Cox
Figure the Giants will add one veteran tight end and one in the draft. Alie-Cox would’ve been under the radar before the market was thinned by three tight ends getting the “franchise tag.” He does know new Giants WRs coach Mike Groh, who came over from the Colts.

TE Hayden Hurst
A former first-round pick and still only 28, he’s not as highly regarded as he once was, but he figures to be in the Giants’ price range. He also has a history with new tight ends coach Andy Bischoff from their days with the Ravens.

TE Will Dissly
He’s a strong blocker and an underrated receiver who was never used as the No. 1 tight end in Seattle. He should be way under everyone’s radar, inexpensive, and at 25 has a lot of upside. That’s the type of free agent the Giants will love this year.

@FieldYates: The Giants have waived TE Kaden Smith with a failed physical designation.

@RVacchianoSNY
This move leaves GM Joe Schoen with $27.6M to go to reach his goal of clearing $40M off the Giants cap.  That doesn’t include Sterling Shepard’s paycut. I’ll factor that in when the details are clear.

Blake Martinez agrees to pay cut.

"The two sides came to an agreement on a salary reduction that will greatly decrease what was scheduled to be a salary cap cost of $14 million. The Giants, in need of relief – new general manager Joe Schoen said he wanted to find $40 million in cap savings – did not want to part ways with Martinez but they would have if Martinez did not agree to rework his deal. He was scheduled to make $8.4 million this season......."

Jordan Raanan

Through conversations w/sources over past few days...

Giants told everyone they have no $$$

The $5M range for a TE? Probably too expensive.

A mid-range ($8M) OT? Nope. Too much.

One of top or mid-range guards at $6M-10M? Not likely. Out of their price range.

Looks like Jordan needs better sources.   I like this signing.

Ian Rapoport
@RapSheet

Former #Colts OL Mark Glowinski has agreed to terms with the #Giants. He gets 3 years for $20M with $11.4M fully guaranteed.

Dan Duggan
@DDuggan21
Figured the Giants would make one mid-level interior OL signing like this. Glowinski has been the Colts’ starting RG for the past three seasons. Eighth-year veteran turns 30 in May.

Based on last season's PFF overall grades he is a clear upgrade over Will Hernandez. Will was 55.9 this guy was 70.1

I wonder why the Colts let this guy go, he seems productive and I think they have plenty of cap space.

Jon Feliciano former Bills C signed

SOURCE: Former #Bills offensive lineman Jon Feliciano will rejoin Brian Daboll and Bobby Johnson in New York. He'll play center for the Giants. It's a one-year deal. Could hit market again in 2023 after big year.

*******

Ralph Vacchiano

So the Giants' offensive line for 2022 could (could) be:

LT Andrew Thomas LG Shane Lemieux C Jon Feliciano RG Mark Glowinski RT Matt Gono.   I'd still bet on a tackle in the first round and multiple linemen in the first two days. But that's a much-improved start.

*****

Art Stapleton

@art_stapleton
Juice. Swagger. Killer instinct.

That's how former Bills teammate Dion Dawkins described what Jon Feliciano brings to the table:

I think they don't want to have a bunch of OL on long term deals. Glowinski is decent, but was probably their weakest starter. Upgrade for the Giants though.

you want to know why we suck.....

Tom Rock

@TomRock_Newsday
Evan Engram's departure makes it 11 straight Giants first-round picks who didn't get or play a long-term second contract with the team. ELEVEN! Last one to do so was Kiwanuka (JPP pieced together a few short term deals and Odell was signed then traded). That's a loooong stretch.

Those 1st round picks:

Aaron Ross
Kenny Phillips
Hakeem Nicks
JPP
Prince Amukamara
David Wilson
Justin Pugh
Odell Beckham Jr.
Ereck Flowers
Eli Apple
Evan Engram

Those 1st round picks:

Aaron Ross
Kenny Phillips
Hakeem Nicks
JPP
Prince Amukamara
David Wilson
Justin Pugh
Odell Beckham Jr.
Ereck Flowers
Eli Apple
Evan Engram
Aaron Ross - he was ok but not great.
Kenny Phillips - Didn't want to pay him, also not great
Hakeem Nicks - Injury killed his career
JPP - Declined during later Giant years + fireworks accident
Prince Amukamara - Not great
David Wilson - Injury killed his career
Justin Pugh - Wasn't bad, just got paid elsewhere
Odell Beckham Jr.- Attitude basically cost him his NY tenure
Ereck Flowers - Bust
Eli Apple - Bust
Evan Engram - Promising start, *Disturbed finish

EDIT: I'm not posting that link. Giants fans know what I mean.

If I recall properly Phillips’ had some injury issues.

Ross actually came back to the Giants after leaving and won a 2nd Super Bowl

Prince had a decent career after leaving, not a great player but productive.

Jordan Raanan

@JordanRaanan
Sterling Shepard's cap charge in his reworked contract for 2022 is $6.3 million.

His original cap charge was $12.5M for this year. So savings of $6.2M. #Giants

If the Giants straight cut Shepard (non-June 1), they would have saved just $4.5M. So this is a win-win. They get the cap savings + the player. Shepard gets to stay in New Jersey, which is where he wanted to be.

Of all the guys mentioned as possible QB’s for the Giants this offseason (Trubisky, Mariotta etc.) Taylor was my favorite option.

Taylor is an experienced guy who is mobile and competent. He isn’t a turnover machine.

The Giants shouldn’t have to change their offense much (whatever that may be under Daboll) if/when Jones gets hurt.

Hate this move. It is something I would expect Gettleman to do.
