Von: Not sure if he is over the hill.  His sack numbers were down in 2019 but his pressures were still there.  Losing Chubb in 2019 hurt Vons production: without a viable threat opposite, defenses could chip and double him all day.  All reports last pre-season were glowing - he was primed for a great year before a freak ankle injury.  Regardless, cutting Von would have cost $4M in dead money so the team would be saving $16M - pretty close to what top edge rushers made when FA opened this year.

Lindsay: I think we (FF community and Bronco fans alike) overvalue Lindsay.  I keep hearing that the Broncos didn't use him correctly.  Well, they said the same about Tebow.  You don't pay a lot of money for a guy you can only use in a few specific ways.  I love the dude, his fire and passion was incredible, but he also went down on first contact a lot.  Also, he was a liability in the passing game (not great hands, not a great blocker) and didn't contribute on special teams.  Lindsay is a guy who could turn a nice hole into a 50 yard run, but most NFL backs can turn a nice hole into a 10-20 yard run...Lindsay had value there for sure but if the hole isn't here, he's losing yards.  A guy who can eek out 4 yards when there isn't a hole is more valuable. 

I'd also say that I think Lindsay and his agents over-valued his worth.  He rejected any offer from Broncos, so the team let him go out and see if he could find another offer, and they would match - a great way for Lindsay to make market value, but for the Broncos to keep him.  He didn't find it, so he asked to be released, thinking the RFA original round tender was holding him back.  I think he will find that is not the case.  I don't think he gets >$3M/year.

9th draft spot: If you believe Broncos are OK with Lock, CB is next biggest need.  All mocks I have read had Broncos going CB at 9: Farley or Surtain. with the Darby signing and if the Broncos can acquire Kyle Fuller, Broncos could go BPA - OL, or LB.  If the Lock-trust is a smoke screen, it's a hell of a lot easier to move up from 9 than it is at, say, 15 or 20.  toss in next years #1 and that could do the trick.

look for some big moves to be made in the near future.  Broncos are in process of signing Simmons (currently on franchise tag) to a long term deal, and converting salaries of McManus and Purcell roster bonus into signing bonus (i.e. kicking the can down the road in exchange for more breathing room in 2021).  Something big is about to drop.  I'm hoping it's related to be Bears.

I agree with most of this post but had to comment on Von....he really hasn't made an impact play since the super bowl. win....seriously name one...Elway gave him a huge contract basically paying him for past performance and a nice three game stretch that ended in a SB victory....but he has done nothing since....we hear the double teaming and chipping on "every play" but that just isn't true....with the money he was given at the time (QB type money) he should be impacting every game in some way......obviously not as much, but similar to what a QB does....the only real highlight this guy has been in is when he was chasing Mahomes before the left handed pass.....he should thank Mahomes for that....the team asked him to restructure and he told them to pound sand......and then went to the media and talked about wanting to retire a Bronco and wanting pats on the back for being Mr. Colorado team guy.....if he was all about the team, he wold have restructed or taken less because his performance has not lived up to his contract and its not even close...personally I would have let him walk and have kept K. Jackson.....

agree with almost everything else here.....what they do at QB will be interesting now that most of the FA dominos have fallen and the Watson thing looks dicey.....seems like at (9) they are sitting on the edge of top 4-5 QB range....if they like one of them, they should do what they need to do to move up and get their guy.....they have to hope they aren't picking in the top 10 again....locking down Simmons and bringing Von back makes it feel like they think they are in win now mode.....but if that only means a few more wins than last year......there is no worst spot to be than the 8-8 range where you miss the playoffs but your draft pick is in the late teens.....feels like DEN keeps trying to do the rebuild dance but never fully commits to getting on the dance floor, and it shows in their record.....we will see...

Oh I understand it.  And we need to differentiate between the terms "Void" and "Voidable" here better -- because it is unclear which it is.  If the contract is automatically void after a set time frame, without any other trigger, I question the vaildity of the contract.  If it is voidABLE under certain conditions, or at someone's option, then that makes more sense.

But why even have this?  What is the difference between just cutting the player vs having a void(able) term? The signing bonus still is spread over the life of the deal and accelerates the same way as well.

They cut Duke of course but just making sure we are on right track and David's contract they recently re-stuctured which I think lowered his pay but gave him more guarantees so it's probably safe to assume he'll stick.

All 3 come off the books in a year.

Jeremy Fowler said Jets, Panthers and Patriots all got involved with Carson.

I was trying to say something along these lines yesterday but we got some solid RB wide open spots and not much left. At this point Fournette is the only RB I feel remotely confident is a starting level RB left and again for all we know he could sign with Patriots or another team we don't view as RB needy team.

This is really setting up IMO to enhance the value of  some mid to later round one rookie picks as I I think potential has increased a great deal one of the non-Big 3 RB's lands well. I mean if someone like Gainwell or Sermon end up going to a place like Jets, Steelers or Falcons anytime on day two they stand a good chance of being first round picks, likely really, and I'm talking non-SF. And I just answered a question in the trade thread about the Big 7 holding, one of these go top 75 to one of those teams I think in most leagues of mine they are bumping one of those big 7 back.

Miami could be another (they have a lot of picks) as could Arizona.

Texans have done a lot stupid stuff but these are mostly roster churn with a new GM. Pretty much almost every one of these is one year and low money except Tyrod which given the Watson news makes more sense now. They are mostly depth signings or special teams and paired with cuts or trades of BOBs guys that were overpaid.

Forrest for the trees right here. Texans appear to be readying for a Watson trade and then a total rebuild. These bummy 1-yr deals will improve their own draft stock for 2022 to get their new QB and then reload for real with a fresh and fruity cap and a bounty of picks from Watson's next team.

Free Agency could not have been much more of a letdown so far for sure, you kind of alluded to that before it started and you were dead on.

But I keep saying this in a few threads, the  one good thing about FA is it's left a lot of RB openings which should make the draft potentially more exciting.

Yeah I agree with the take on the RB openings. When combined with the expected amount of unexpected turnover due to injuries and normal turnover, I have to figure at least a couple of those next tier guys after the big 3 will land in good spots. 

My premise for FA being boring had little to do with cap situations. I don't even pretend to know anything about contract nuances. I just didn't think there were any real game changing names at WR or RB. I feel like you and I are the only Juju fans on this board and I have been a vocal Golladay hater. RBs have been devalued for years and you can throw a dart at this board and probably find a comment about how foolish it is to pay for RBs. So that kind of only left TE and QB. Bill cornered the best two TEs and QB was lukewarm at best. 

The story of FA seems to be the OL and DEF players. If I am reading it right.

Yes. Exactly this. I've sort of been dreading it as I have four second-round picks and most of these guys (Sermon, Chuba Hubbard, Jermar Jefferson) might not be around by the time I get to pick them. Hindery has said that the real value in this draft lies at the end of the first round, actually, and he'd seem to be right the way things are breaking. But that'll all change depending on where they go in the draft. It would then seem that there's no use making concrete moves up with capital for earlier picks until then, though once we have the draft, the value of those picks will be through the roof.

I thought we'd see a lot of trades, not counting the two QB trades we knew before. With all the teams struggling to get under the cap just thought we'd see activity but virtually nothing fantasy related.

RB's-not a great FA class and what I think most would view as top two (Carson and Jones) returned to their teams. This is were FA could have been fun, Jones or Carson leave and then Dillon and Penny become something of value. A middling guy like Fournette or Drake end up in places like Pittsburgh or ATL and then get some form of value spikes. Instead the biggest free agency post RB value change was probably Josh Jacobs further nosedive.

TE-Top two sign on same team with a current QB who can't throw anymore.

WR- again a few of the top players returned to their teams, Golladay is still lingering, but for me what I like most about FA is middling type players jumping in value and this did not happen. No WR landed as say that #2 in Green Bay. We came close here at least, if JuJu had accepted the Chiefs offer that would have been exciting but close is really worthless here.

So for me a big letdown due to lack of trades,  almost non-existence of middling type players gaining tangible value and really when you think about FA on a whole it's really hard to come up with anyone who really won in terms of value. At best we are left labeling the "wins" as players whose teams did not sign anyone to compete with them, not any player actually going to a much better situation. So far anyway, just a few left.

Just to comment on this...

Perriman landed in Detroit and the “current” WR1 there.  Not that he’s a “good” talent but he could surprise if Detroit doesn’t do much to address it in the draft.

I’m also curious to see where Mike Davis goes.  Again, not a great talent but if he falls into a good situation he could end up with some value.

I bumped Perriman for sure. I would hope they would draft at least a couple WRs.

I'd say he was the WR1 last year as well. Not a bad shot to take on him but health seems to be a bigger factor for him then his spot in the pecking order.

I think he's due one more year with hopefully healthy weapons before we say he's a bust. He has flashed a few times. But he has to cut out the fumbles/turnovers for sure.

His contract was structured very very well for him, I mean he did pretty great considering the market, almost no way he does not see $54M over first 3 years of the deal and if he's halfway decent should actually see the whole contract to to the end.

I think what he had going in his favor, in fact I feel pretty strongly about this is both the FA class of WR's and the draft class of WR's is filled with smaller WR's, slot types and #2's.  WR may be deep, prototypical #1's WR's are not.
