2022-23 NBA Thread: “you’ll never let me down like the Heat did”, Miami fan says to giant pile of cocaine (4 Viewers)

Also Christian Braun plays like a college freshman who has waaaaaaaay too much nervous energy.

Either calm down or gtfo.
He does. But he is the energy guy and the crowd loves him. So stick him out there for a minute or two and the risk or reward is pretty low.
Agreed. CB was much more effective in the regular season when the Nuggets were prone to being lackadaisical. Less so in the playoffs now when everyone seems to be playing with great energy for four quarters.

I was out driving after the game and ESPN radio is worse than the TV ESPN. Maybe they have to try and hype things up to keep interest in the series. The Heat got to within 9 with 2:30 left on the clock! They are figuring things out! Spo gonna get a game plan together! It is just mind boggling. You would have thought the Nuggets eked out a win on the last shot or something, and not been in complete control of the game the whole way through.
The Heat did only shoot 2 FTA, but I watched the whole game, and I am not sure where all the fouls the Nuggets supposedly got away with were. This seemed more a function of the way the Heat were playing offense and the fact that the Nuggets weren't put in many positions where they were forced or needed to foul. The Heat could have shot better from three-point range but so could have the Nuggets. Jokic only played 40 minutes and still had the triple double. And just like the Lakers series, whenever the Nuggets were challenged, they came up with the plays to answer and keep control of the game. Someone on the Heat is going to have to shoot lights out like Booker and KD did for the Suns just to make this a competitive series.

Mia needs a different strategy on D. Having butler guard Jokic … Not gonna work. Butler was tired by end of Q1 dealing w jokic strength. They need to put kevin love and/ or Zeller on him for a while even if he scores more. If butler wants him out of pride in second half fine. But butler was gassed early and jokic passed over him all game. M Jordan didn’t guard Karl Malone for a reason. Same situation here and my guess is butler told spo he wanted jokic.

Joker has 27-14-10 and only took 12 shots :lmao: He’s one of a kind.

I know it was talked about last night and is mentioned throughout the year but not enough - dude sets endless screens to get his teammates open. Unbelievably unselfish for a superstar and it is so huge for their offense not to mention how massive he is and the defenders have to be worn out both defending him and getting around him.

Somebody on Twitter made a point that he has the passing vision of Steve Nash but is so tall he can see angles better. Basically can make passes nobody else has made.

No offense to the Heat, it was a nice run, but Denver is just a so much better team. I bet the Nuggets to win in 5 games, and now I’m worried how Miami wins a game here. Heck I know in the NBA things change so much from game to game, but the talent gap is just so huge here.

When people are suggesting that Cody Zeller or Haywood Highsmith need to play more it can’t be a good sign.

That cross court pass to Brown out of the double team for a wide open 3 was elite even if he made it look simple.

I don't think Heat fans realize how good the Nuggets have been this postseason. They have only lost 3 games and 2 of the games were because two all NBA players went nuclear and super efficient for 2 games. The Heat don't have two players that can do that. With the way Butler has played for the last 5 games I don't think they even have one player that can do that for 4 out of the next 6 games.

To beat the Nuggets in this series you would probably have take Booker and Durant and drop them on the Heat right now and even then it would still be a great series.

I agree but I do think the point about missing open shots is valid - although it ignores that Denver missed almost as many and shot worse from 3. I could see Miami get hot from 3 and take a game but Denver got essentially whatever they wanted almost all game and had a ton of easy buckets. Miami doesn’t have enough firepower to overcome that AND they have no answer for Joker.

It is but it could also be because Miami’s guys are turning back into the mediocre players that they are.

Sure but Struss is a decent shooter - not 0-10. I don't like the what-if game but I can see a Miami's fan logic in saying if he makes 3-4 of those 9 threes then they are right there. It's mostly wrong as Denver was never in trouble. Also, I'd say these role players are also tired and having to shoot with tired legs isn't easy. And having to defend these bigger/stronger Denver players won't help. I think game 2 tells us whether Miami has any shot at all - if they look tired and get beat soundly again then a sweep or gentleman's sweep seems inevitable.

Heat fans have a ton of respect for this nuggets team, but we are used to our guys going out and doing the improbable. Last night we had a bunch of guys go out on the big stage and miss a lot of shots. We had a lot of guys go out on the big stage and take a lot of jumpers and not get to the line. Now, some of that is definitely home cooking but we were also barely at the rim all night.

we are used to jimmy basically being nuclear for a whole month (playoff jimmy), but yeah, this is a different animal for sure. Giannis and Tatum we can handle. Thin tall guys. Joker is like embiid but with a better passing game so if this is going to be a series we have to find something to either score with them or slow them down.

we don’t need booker or Durant. We need struss and Martin to hit their open looks.

thankfully When jimmy had that clear path and got tangled up with whomever he didn’t get injured. That looked like a broken leg waiting to occur so I’ll take that as a win.

the Nice thing about Miami being in all these championships over the years is you get the perspective of which team was the aggressor. Miami was not last night. The aggressor usually wins these games. The good news with these series is the narrative cam change game to game. It may not and it may simply be Denver’s time but the on,y thing I do know about the heat is they ain’t giving up.

Charles and Shaq interview Joker after the game.

My favorite exchange:
Grant Hill - "Who are the guys you wanted to pattern your game after?"
Jokic - "I think it's Shaq."
The entire set just starts laughing.
Shaq - "Thank you, brother."

Miami has gone small over the years bc they had to and to be fair so has most of the rest of the league. How many “true” big men are left out there. 4 guys? Maybe 5. Even in the big 3 era we had some scrub guy at center to take fouls but a lot of times bosh played center when it mattered.

this is one of those “non obvious “ situations where I have no idea what spo does next. Put love back in there and move Martin back to the bench? Swap highsmith and his energy for Martin and strengthen the second unit? Bring shaq in from the booth?

When I watched it live, I thought he might have gotten away with a push off.

In slow motion, Zelleris backing up before contact and Jokic pulls up until he is gone and calmly makes the layup without any extension.

He also had a play where he got deep on Adebayo and spun twice and ended up getting fouled and I thought the same thing, that he had initiated and possibly gotten away with an offensive foul, but in slow-mo he clearly just took the space that was there and then waited until Bam was backed off a bit and went up.

His body control at that size is like nothing I've ever seen.

Bam had a fantastic game and Jokic will get his mostly every game. But they need to not let him dominate that much and figure out how to guard Gordon if they go small. I personally don't think they have enough offense to compete if they play Zeller with Bam. I don't know the answer either - I do think if you want anybody trying to figure it out it's Spo. I do have to wonder why Love didn't play at all - was he banged up or something?

Bam has the size/strength combo to guard him for short periods, but eventually he will both get in foul trouble and lose energy for the offensive end where they need him as well.

Zeller has the height and needs to play like a man possessed to even have a chance against Jokic, but he can't really do that. Highsmith is just too small to do anything but hope to swipe the ball loose. Butler/Martin/Love all are similar in that they are giving up too much in size/strength to be effective.

Would have been a much more enjoyable series if the Celtics could have gotten their crap together and been in this one because they have more options to throw at Jokic, but just didn't have a coach to pull it all together.

Come on, there was no home cooking. Denver dominated that game from start to finish minus a couple small runs which all teams have.

Martin and Strauss are who they are, those little hot streaks aren't who they are. Martin shooting 60 percent from the field and 50 percent from three isn't who he is. Butler isn't that guy either that goes on a hot streaks for a month at a time. LeBron, Durant, Curry, Jokic etc are. That is why they are the elite of elite and Jimmy is a tier or two below that.

Heat fans and most fans in general over value their own players. Could a miracle happen and they win this series sure, but the Heat absolutely need another dude if they want to win a title. The Heat fans might respect the Nuggets, but you should fear them. They are that good this year and the margin for winning this season is razor thin.

P.S. handling the thin Giannis kid. Lol

This Nuggets season is what I wish the Angels could do ever since they had Trout and now Ohtani.

Awesome to see the best players get theirs.

Remember when Michael Jordan drafted Cody Zeller 4th overall. 😂

To quote the great Alanis Morissette, "It's like beiiiiiing a bad GM, when all you have is high picks."

dont have blinders on. There was some home cooking. In Miami that butler trip is clear path. Again, Miami didn’t press and wasn’t at all aggressive but the seller fall from joker was a push off That could have been called.

you really don’t know miami fans at all. We are just as surprised as you all are that we are here, without herro this seemed impossible. That being said, struss and Duncan are streaky guys that when they go into a slump the other one kind of replaces the first one. Vincent is on his way to a big contract (sadly not in Miami). Martin has been a revelation and if he regresses a bit he is still a solid role guy for the next few years But yeah bams game needs to expand out to the three point line and Lowry has been a huge disappointment. If I were spo I put love back in the lineup just for his size and move Martin back to the bench.
Bam and the heat d solved Gianni’s for 2/3 series we’ve played them in. They swept us the year after the bubble

Awesome win for the Nuggets last night. They just have soo much more firepower than the Heat, and they were remarkable in creating mismatches through their movement. They took advantage of Aaron Gordon early. When the Heat adjusted to slow him down, Jamal and MPJ found found spots to thrive. For Miami to have a chance in this series—-they are going to need the majority of their players to contribute on both ends of the court—and frankly—they could really use Herro this series. Last night Strus, Martin and Duncan Robinson provided next to nothing. They combined to go 1-24 from the field, and they didn’t provide much on the defensive end either. I do think that Jimmy Butler does need to be more aggressive and hungry offensively. He’s not in the position that Jokic is. Jokic and the Nuggets can win without Jokic needing to take a ton of field goals. Miami has no chance to win with Butler taking 14 shots.

I agree, I also think the Wolves were the biggest test the Nuggets faced this postseason.

to be fair, that was a horrible draft and zeller actually was a decent player when he could stay healthy.

i forgot that Bebe was drafted that high (number 16)

number 19 was the immortal sergey karasev.

of course giannis at 15 and gobert at 27 worked out amazingly, but it is crazy to look at that whole draft in the context of today's NBA.

They need to put kevin love and/ or Zeller on him for a while even if he scores more
Solid strategy here coach

You'd have to be a moron not to see how , but then again we've ... nevermind.

Jokic got 27. Let's say he scores 5 more 2 pointers. But if that's in place of 5 made 3s on the passes he dished out, then MIA is 5 points closer end of game.

And more than that, you get a fresh Butler and Bam on offense. Butler was -17 last night. He was -30 at one point. All because the Joker beat him up physically in the switches or in MIA D strategy. Let Zeller and Love lean on him for say 10-14 mins. Keep your star fresh

A few notes from last night:
  • MPJ played the greatest all-around game I have ever seen from him. He missed a lot of open jumpers, but he was an elite defender and rebounder last night. I'm not worried about the shooting, it'll come, but watching him transform from a pure shooter into an all-around player is really cool.
  • I literally counted about a dozen Heat fans that I ran into the entire game. Ball Arena usually has way too many opposing fans, but even against LA, we've shown out.
  • Like the Lakers series in game 1, I think the Heat showed too much of their hand in the 4th quarter with extended periods of zone (which did work for a couple possessions) and playing more Highsmith. I'm curious who the Heat start in game 2 - Martin is clearly too small for Gordon. I think they go a different direction.
  • I was really hoping to see more former Nuggets players/coaches at the game to honor a 50 year old franchise. The only player (and coach) I saw was Dan Issel. The Nuggets need to do better to honor the legacy of the franchise.
  • To whoever I was arguing about regarding Jokic's conditioning, we got to see it in the late fourth when he decided that the game was getting to close and took over and didn't look tired.

Jokic shot 80% from 0-3 feet this year. I will happily take him backing Zeller or Love under the hoop at an 80% conversation rate (he's also a career 83% FT shooter) as opposed to good looks from their 40% three point shooters. Obviously, there is no solution for Jokic, but putting ****tier defenders on him is absolutely a recipe for failure.

First, classy first line there.

Second, the reason MIA lost wasn't because Butler was exhausted from covering Jokic

I love when people replay games and make changes to what actually happened, but they tend to do that for only ONE team . . . and they simply assume the other team would have done the same exact thing the rest of the game as what actually happened, not making any adjustments, and being content to just lose the game. For example, if TEAM X had made a few more baskets and held TEAM Y to 5 more twos instead of threes, then they would have won. Does anyone actually think that had the Heat scored made more baskets and the Nuggets traded 5 threes for made twos that Denver would have just been ok with that? Teams go about the game based on the pace of play and what the score is. IMO, if the Heat scored 10 more points, the Nuggets would have kept pace and scored 10 more points. They didn't have to, so they didn't go 110% to max out their score.

Similar to football when a team loses, and the fan base wants to take away the interception their QB threw on their team's last drive, counting it as a TD to take the lead instead, but then count the other team's final clock killing drive as a 0-point drive and award their team the victory. That's not how it works. A team without the lead is not going to intentionally run out the clock and not try to score when they are losing.
