The fans of Magic, Blazer, Wolves, Pelicans, Pacers, Thunder and Jazz have all spent decades rooting for their teams and spent a lot of time and money and have never had the joy of winning it all. I don't think this is a participation award they have earned it, their teams haven't cooperated.

There’s a ****ing line here!

-Hawks fans

I want to start by saying you are awesome , extraordinary even AAA, love your posts in here they are funny and witty and I never skip over one of them, but in my very limited experience watching
/reading about the Braves, Hawks and Falcons the average Atlanta fan kind of sucks.

Obviously it could be my small sample size, but I don't have anything else to go off of.

Yeah, Atlanta fans have a well deserved reputation as fair weather and not giving great support. There’s no excuse but there’s some reasons for it.

1. It’s really a college town despite being a big city. College sports are king around here (with the Braves) - UGA is beyond huge and Auburn, Bama, Tennessee, Clemson, South Carolina and UF/FSU are all close and well supported.
2. We are front runners - give the city a winner and they show up. The Braves sucked for years and had horrible attendance even with the SuperStation but once ‘91 rolled around I’d imagine the Braves are close to top 5 in attendance the last 30 years.
3. To go along with 2 - the teams have sucked. The Hawks and Falcons have been around like 110 years combined and had 2 championship appearances (lost to the Broncos and of course the rip your heart out and stomp on loss to the Patriots).
4. And there’s been little in the way of superstars to root for. Deion, Michael Vick and Dominique are the 3 that come to mind. Deion could only do so much as a CB, we all know Vick’s downfall and Nique was great and highly entertaining but was overshadowed by Bird and then MJ.
5. There’s also logistic (horrible public transportation) and racial elements at play too.

also no one is actually from atlanta it is all transplants 37 percent of the city is not from georgia so they dont give a rip take that to the bank brohans

Yep - meant to include that but you are right there’s a lot of transplants. Most people I talk to are shocked to find out I’ve been here my entire life - there’s not a lot of those, especially inside the perimeter.

The metro area has been growing rapidly for decades. Metro area population by year:

1950: 513,000
1960: 776,000
1970: 1,182,000
1980: 1,625,000
1990: 2,184,000
2000: 3,522,000
2010: 4,544,000
2020: 5,803,000

That’s a crazy growth rate. We’re talking in the 30-50% range for most decades. So it isn’t that most people are going anywhere — it’s that they are predominantly migrating from somewhere else and relocating to Atlanta. Small towns in the south looking for employment and northerners escaping the cold.

How did Atlanta United become such an instant massive success with all these built in issues?

I listened to Mike & Mike often on my way to work for a number of years. I thought it was one of the best things ESPN did. I liked both of them together on that show, but I actually liked Golic better. Since Greenberg moved on, I have had no interest in the lousy sports programming he is a part of, like Get Up and First Take. :x
honestly, does anyone watch that dreck? ESPN's radio arm has also been killed with the loss of Mike and Mike and Lebatard being gone. Honestly if ESPN disappeared tomorrow I would not miss it. Other than the Manning brothers MNF alternate cast I can't name a single thing I watch on there that isn't just live sports. The sports "agenda" they push is worse than fox news in terms of how little it aligns with reality. Hey, lets talk about the Lakers or the Yankees and then its 5 minutes of commercials. Wow, the Knicks and Stephen A wants to chime in and heres another 6 minutes of commercials. Now greeny wants to beg Aaron Rodgers to come to the jets and you guessed it, MORE COMMERCIALS!!!!

The only thing I watch is PTI and I do that via some Thai YouTube stream and skip the commercials.

I don't really follow MLS so I looked this up because I was curious. Last year Atlanta United averaged 47K. Which is 12K more than the next highest. That 47K is the same that the LA Dodgers averaged. Crazy
Yeah, it is insane.

And even more interesting is most people just assumed it was going to struggle due to the issues previously mentioned but from day 1 they have been crushing it.

Soccer is big in the area and there’s a large Hispanic community that they draw from. Additionally, they were and are still relatively new - I’ve noticed the shine wearing off a little and I guarantee if we turned in to the Fire over night for 3 years some folks would stop showing up.

Tickets are also not too bad. I think I pay $1700 for my season ticket - front row club level with free food and drink (including beer and wine). We end up paying about $100 a game for that seat. I have no clue what that same seat and amenities would be for the Falcons but I imagine it’s at least 3-5 times more. That prices out a ton of fans (including me).

Yeah, PTI is still a guilty pleasure that I'll watch occasionally despite Tony's horrendous takes. It's like the guy doesn't watch sports and just spouts the popular opinion of the day but for some reason I'll still watch. Kudos to those two for being on 20+ years.

Wow and I thought Austin FC was doing well. Impressive numbers.

Q2 stadium in Austin is gorgeous but in hindsight they probably could have built it much bigger. I read just recently they have sold out 44 straight games.

Yep. Austin is a smaller city so I think they were playing it safe being how small Houston's stadium is. They definitely underestimated the demand as they're really the only sport in town outside of UT. Love the energy in these smaller more intimate stadiums but probably not the best business decision.

So the zombie Heat got a puncher's chance tonight?

They took 2 free throws. IIRC, they were missing some absolute cookies around the rim as well. I guess they got a punchers chance; but they need to be almost perfect. I don't know if they should just let Jokic eat in regards to getting points and try to prevent his teammates from getting fired up. To me, his passing and those guys knocking points down is just a dagger thru the heart.

I agree but I do think the point about missing open shots is valid
It is but it could also be because Miami’s guys are turning back into the mediocre players that they are.

Sure but Struss is a decent shooter - not 0-10. I don't like the what-if game but I can see a Miami's fan logic in saying if he makes 3-4 of those 9 threes then they are right there. It's mostly wrong as Denver was never in trouble. Also, I'd say these role players are also tired and having to shoot with tired legs isn't easy. And having to defend these bigger/stronger Denver players won't help. I think game 2 tells us whether Miami has any shot at all - if they look tired and get beat soundly again then a sweep or gentleman's sweep seems inevitable.
I agree. Tonights game is a true backs “against the wall” moment for the Heat.

Look I am a super Heat homer but I also can see we don’t match up well with Denver. They have so much more size than we do and they have the best player in the series.

Jimmy and Bam have to be on point and 2 of these role players (Vincent, Martin, Strus, Lowry, Love) need to pour in some big buckets. Otherwise we go down 2-0…..and if we don’t compete in getting down 2-0….yeah it’s most likely lights out.

We win tonight….it’s a series again heading to Miami.

Mark Jackson saying maybe the smartest thing he has ever said on a broadcast

it's great for Adebayo to get that 12 ft. jumper in the paint, but Denver is going to let him take that 30 times if all he does is fade away and not put Jokic under stress.

Just a better, deeper team.

It is nice though. If this FInals is a representation of the upcoming post Lebron/post Warriors years, we might actually have a nice variety of teams in the Finals.

Another underrated reason to root for the Nuggets is to see Jeff Green get a ring. Guy looked like he might be a rising star in the league and then had that heart surgery. Came back and has had a pretty solid career.

I don’t see how that’s a foul

The announcer said it perfectly, wrong place at the wrong time.
Dude dove for a ball. Other guy grabbed it and jumped over him, while taking a shot. That’s not a foul.
Straight from the NBA rulebook:

Defenders must give airborne shooters the opportunity to land safely. Whether intentional or not, this is a dangerous play and it will be penalized.
