I love it when the Reddit sports nerds latch on to something. No idea how NBA scorekeeping is done but I would be surprised if they let a potentially invested local make these decisions.

Pretty sure that’s how score keeping is done in just about all sports. Some NFL teams routinely have high tackle numbers for their defensive players because the home scorer gives out half tackles to everyone and their brother on every play. Those players then move to another team and their tackle numbers suddenly drop.

I think the leagues will start to control this more given the growing presence of sports books and prop bets.

Two hardest things I've ever tried to be good at are playing golf and basketball officiating. All it takes is a slight loss of concentration or distraction or even just bad luck of being blocked off to miss a big call.

Not sure where exactly the refs had their eyes, but there were about 3 defenders near LeBron. The Lead (baseline) was likely focused on body contact instead of LeBroa's arm. The Trail would have been watching for pushes/contact in the back and the Center (opposite side) probably didn't have a good angle to see if there was contact for certain.

I do know that in a situation like that, no ref is going to guess. They have to know for certain if there was contact. No call means none of them saw it. Happens on multiple plays every game because relying on 3 guys to see everything is impossible. What I know for sure is that each of them are likely very upset that they missed it and none of them want to miss something like that.

I just find it odd that some people are saying that today’s game is completely different than 30 years ago because of how fast/big/strong players are today while also complaining about refs getting plays wrong.

You either have to just accept that refs are going to miss a lot of calls because of how fast things happen these days and quit complaining, or allow for more technology to assist in some way which may slow games down.

How often does it take zoomed in super slo-mo in 5 different angles to see definitive proof in HD and yet we expect humans to be able to see and process everything perfectly all the time.

How do you lose concentration on the last play of the game? And the lead wasn't blocked off by anyone. To imply that an official can only focus on 3-feet of vertical space (focused on the body as you say) and not see what is going on up top really makes these guys look worse than they are. They are never calling a body foul in this situation anyway. This was an egregious missed call by the lead. We only get two man crews and I would lose my **** if the guy spit the bit like that.

I also think that the elephant in the room is the Lebron factor. A lot of people are going to justify the lack of a call just because they are just anti-Lebron. A lot of people would clown him saying that he refuses to drive the ball in end of game scenarios because he’s scared to go to the foul line in crunch time situations. He did exactly that in this case—clearly gets fouled—passionately and rightfully claims he got fouled—and gets labeled a “crybaby” for it. I guarantee you that if Luka, Tatum, Giannis or Embiid got fouled in that same situation—they would be absolutely be passionate about it—but the amount of hate towards them would be a fraction of what Lebron is receiving.

With that said—I don’t understand the notion that referees should be above criticism. It’s a very hard job that they volunteered to do. It’s a job that requires accuracy—and when anybody does a really poor job at work—they should be subject to some criticism and accountability. Sure—the refs are doing their best—but so are the players and so are the coaches. Yet—the coaches and players are subject to criticism, punishment, fines and accountability—and the refs are not. I guarantee you that if Luka, Tatum, Giannis or Embiid got fouled in that same situation—they would be absolutely be passionate about it—but the amount of hate towards them would be a fraction of what Lebron is receiving.

With that said—I don’t understand the notion that referees should be above criticism. It’s a very hard job that they volunteered to do. It’s a job that requires accuracy—and when anybody does a really poor job at work—they should be subject to some criticism and accountability. Sure—the refs are doing their best—but so are the players and so are the coaches. Yet—the coaches and players are subject to criticism, punishment, fines and accountability—and the refs are not. It’s more important that the games be called right than it is to blindly void the refs of all accountabilty no matter how bad they screw up.

And? I’ve seen luka complain to refs for minutes after missed calls. Are you even trying to imply that the fact that it was Lebron played no role in how a lot of people are choosing to react to this? Tom brady has yelled at and berated refs before and people praise him for that. People that hate Lebron in regard to social issues seem to find reasons to also hate him on the court imo
