2022-23 NBA Thread: “you’ll never let me down like the Heat did”, Miami fan says to giant pile of cocaine (1 Viewer)

I love it when the Reddit sports nerds latch on to something. No idea how NBA scorekeeping is done but I would be surprised if they let a potentially invested local make these decisions.
Pretty sure that’s how score keeping is done in just about all sports. Some NFL teams routinely have high tackle numbers for their defensive players because the home scorer gives out half tackles to everyone and their brother on every play. Those players then move to another team and their tackle numbers suddenly drop.
I think the leagues will start to control this more given the growing presence of sports books and prop bets.

This product is so bad it's great. Like comical. The ref'ing in this Lakers Celtics game is unbelievably bad, on both sides, it truly is hard to believe.

Then the whining. Lebron, the King, literally on all fours after regulation, like she just fell off the balance beam. His temper tantrum prior to that is hysterical.

Oh, and Beverly goes and gets a photographer's camera to bring on the floor and show the ref (and TV SHOW) the "evidence". Technical.

So what, another missed call, but nowhere near the number of bad calls.

Traveling and flopping not included. That's a given. All of it, unwatchable.

I was at a bar, only thing on. The NBA is so bad.

I can’t stand the Lakers or Celtics but that no call against Tatum on Lebron was so unbelievably bad.

Somebody on Reddit made an interesting point. Lebron and others have gotten grief for not taking it to the basket on end of game situations- refs swallowing the whistle like this maybe justifies that a little. Insane no call.

I don’t understand how those officials can be allowed to keep officiating m after a no-call like that? Millions are bet on these games, playoff standings are on the line, and it was an easy call to see. Just absolutely insane.

Yep. It wasn’t a difficult foul to see. It wasn’t 50-50. It wasn’t some scrub backup. It was LeBron, in a clutch moment, clearly & obviously fouled. This is also why teams should get more than one challenge — because the refs botch calls like this far too often.

They pointed out that even if they had the challenge they couldn’t have used it for this play.

That’s disappointing.

Yes, James was fouled ...on his third step to the basket, amirite? But that extra step is rather standard, now, isn't it? I don't regularly watch the games.

“Euro step.” Or what old guys like me (no comment on your age Tri) would call traveling.

Was there an opportunity for the coach to challenge that play? Not sure about that rule, how often it can be used, west situations, etc.

I saw on twitter that the answer is no. Take that for what it's worth.

That wasn't anywhere near a travel.
Was it a Euro step? Or just 2 steps?
(Serious question — didn’t watch LeBron’s feet, just saw the obvious hack)

Edit: just watched it with my 14 yo son. 3 steps. Nobody would call that a travel in 2023. Everybody would have called it in 1985 (unless MJ did it).

I'm pretty sure you can't challenge a no-call

I can safely assume you have never officiated a single game in your life.

Two hardest things I've ever tried to be good at are playing golf and basketball officiating. All it takes is a slight loss of concentration or distraction or even just bad luck of being blocked off to miss a big call.

Not sure where exactly the refs had their eyes, but there were about 3 defenders near LeBron. The Lead (baseline) was likely focused on body contact instead of LeBroa's arm. The Trail would have been watching for pushes/contact in the back and the Center (opposite side) probably didn't have a good angle to see if there was contact for certain.

I do know that in a situation like that, no ref is going to guess. They have to know for certain if there was contact. No call means none of them saw it. Happens on multiple plays every game because relying on 3 guys to see everything is impossible. What I know for sure is that each of them are likely very upset that they missed it and none of them want to miss something like that.

No I haven’t. It’s not my job. Most of us haven’t played in the NBA either but we still feel ok to criticize them

It‘s the ref’s job though, and they need to get those calls right. They are supposed to be the best in the world at it.

Old guys think everything is a travel. Good thing I’m young and hip.
Because they are used to the 80s game where everything was in slow motion, and terrible.
Laimbeer would make LeBron cry in the fetal position.

Of course he would, but who wouldn't laugh so hard that end up crying in the fetal position at a 6' 10" 175 lb white guy, wearing a pair of shorts that Kim Kardashian would say are too short.

They are.

That's how hard it is.
I agree. That’s why they need to do more to help them get it right. Ridiculous that such an obvious foul couldn’t be reviewed and corrected.

How long do you want games to last?

They should review any game ending play

I just find it odd that some people are saying that today’s game is completely different than 30 years ago because of how fast/big/strong players are today while also complaining about refs getting plays wrong.

You either have to just accept that refs are going to miss a lot of calls because of how fast things happen these days and quit complaining, or allow for more technology to assist in some way which may slow games down.

How often does it take zoomed in super slo-mo in 5 different angles to see definitive proof in HD and yet we expect humans to be able to see and process everything perfectly all the time.

How do you lose concentration on the last play of the game? And the lead wasn't blocked off by anyone. To imply that an official can only focus on 3-feet of vertical space (focused on the body as you say) and not see what is going on up top really makes these guys look worse than they are. They are never calling a body foul in this situation anyway. This was an egregious missed call by the lead. We only get two man crews and I would lose my **** if the guy spit the bit like that.

It’s one bad call in one game of 82 regular season games. The focus on this and the reaction from Lebron is ridiculous.

Just my two cents on the missed call in the Lakers vs Celtics game. I don’t think that in the modern NBA that Lebron traveled on that play—but people saying that he did are further cementing the point that the refs did a horrid job on that play. If the justification is that Lebron traveled—then technically the refs would have completely missed two calls in the final play of regulation—which further supports the poor officiating claim as opposed to eroding it. I also think that the elephant in the room is the Lebron factor. A lot of people are going to justify the lack of a call just because they are just anti-Lebron. A lot of people would clown him saying that he refuses to drive the ball in end of game scenarios because he’s scared to go to the foul line in crunch time situations. He did exactly that in this case—clearly gets fouled—passionately and rightfully claims he got fouled—and gets labeled a “crybaby” for it. I guarantee you that if Luka, Tatum, Giannis or Embiid got fouled in that same situation—they would be absolutely be passionate about it—but the amount of hate towards them would be a fraction of what Lebron is receiving.

With that said—I don’t understand the notion that referees should be above criticism. It’s a very hard job that they volunteered to do. It’s a job that requires accuracy—and when anybody does a really poor job at work—they should be subject to some criticism and accountability. Sure—the refs are doing their best—but so are the players and so are the coaches. Yet—the coaches and players are subject to criticism, punishment, fines and accountability—and the refs are not. It’s more important that the games be called right than it is to blindly void the refs of all accountabilty no matter how bad they screw up.

I don’t recall videos of Bob Cousy euro-stepping.

And? I’ve seen luka complain to refs for minutes after missed calls. Are you even trying to imply that the fact that it was Lebron played no role in how a lot of people are choosing to react to this? Tom brady has yelled at and berated refs before and people praise him for that. People that hate Lebron in regard to social issues seem to find reasons to also hate him on the court imo
