2022 Philadelphia Eagles - Leave Gannon in Arizona and let’s run through the NFC again in 2023. (2 Viewers)

Why I was disappointed we didn't take an RB in the draft. Everyone was like were deep at RB no issues. Miles is hurt every year with some kind of soft tissue injury.
game scripts and usage aside, i think we were deep last year in what this team expects from the RB room. add to that Hurts' running ability and not drafting a RB was correct imo. you mentioned Howard earlier, I agree with that take and was also hoping they re-sign him or we find another guy like him, a bigger bruiser, and now we got one. I never watched Sermon play, but size wise he's a Howard clone and he's still a young prospect so very optimistic here. It's not like we ever used a RB as a workhorse even when Miles was healthy anyway, which obviously wasn't often. Between Hurts and Smith there's enough young ego here to drown out whatever chip Sermon has on his shoulders too, I think. On paper this is a great match, swipe right. Or left, I actually dunno how that works.
From what little I've read, the issue with Sermon is not being decisive enough and running north south (similar to Sanders at times). So don't think he's the bruiser back they still need, but more of a fill-in if/when Sanders get hurt.

He's more signs of them not believing in Miles or could be hurt more. Didn't see this till just tonight when I finally had down time but we signed Former Jets and Gator RB Lamicheal Perine to the practice Squad. He's 5-11 but a power back who can also catch out of the Backfield. They have Kennedy Brooks also on the PS and signed Sermon. Something is up with Miles IMHO.

I wouldn't be shocked if the Eagles like their other backs that Miles gets traded by the deadline this year no matter where the team is at. Especially if they get a higher draft pick then the comp for letting him walk.
This might be them just trying what they did with CBs over the last 18 months. Grab a bunch cheap and hope someone pans out. I'd only want Sanders back if he's getting paid like a committee member, but he's more talented than that and he'll probably get it somewhere.

I'd rather someone else pay him that money then get stuck paying a guy who won't be playing that much

Busy holiday in Eagles news:

Dillard having forearm surgery, out 4-6 weeks.

Anthony Harris released from PS, at his own request.

Jason Peters officially signed to DAL practice squad, not the active roster (yet.) How funny would it be if some team loses an OT to injury and poaches him!

Teams can protect up to four players on their practice squad each week, preventing them from being signed by other teams. The Chiefs did this frequently with Shane Buechele last season when there was outside interest. They also used practice squad protections on players they were considering elevating for a game in the event of injury or absence of another player.

I'm hoping Hurts has the kind of season that Howie has to pay him 40+ million a year to keep.
Me too. Doesn't matter the contracts Howie gives out anymore really. He'll just spin/wizard it into more draft picks w minimal cap penalties if it doesn't work out. I also hope he keeps adding star players other teams refuse to pay like Aj Brown.

Well as long as he picks the right guys I agree

Won't be perfect for sure, but at this point, its safe to say I feel confident he will make the right moves, and have backup plans in case those moves do not work. Best offseason we have had in a while on paper. Time to let the coaches and players execute the plan!

It is the best I have ever seen. Amazing. Should make the playoffs at least

If their gameplain is still the same as it was going into last year I think he's being replaced by one of the QB Prospects in the '23 draft. A good year just helps the value of Hurts trade wise the Eagles are trying to move up.

Things could obviously change but I don't think the team views Hurts as a Franchise QB and always intended after trading Wentz I think their fault process has been more Hurts is our guy till we can upgrade and as long as he can keep us competitive we're ok. Plus he has good intangibles, good teammate and HE'S CHEAP. Either way if we are replacing Hurts he's traded as Howie and Lurie don't want another Hurts/Wentz situation. So I hope he plays well as it helps his trade value. Maybe one of the top teams in the draft is desperate and would take a chance on Hurts plus a few extra picks instead of an unknown. Nick, Howie and Lurie get their guy.

If it works out you are paying cheap for a QB for at least another 4 yrs and hopefully still very competitive and top team in the League as a whole.

Some things I'll be watching this year:

On D:
  • Do something to generate pressure, especially on 3rd down.
  • What do they *really* think of Marcus Epps? Do they give him responsibilities other than inside Quarter and deep middle? This D works better if the safeties are interchangeable, do they see him as someone who can come down TEs and short zones? If not, they'll still be looking for a S next offseason IMO (assuming the scheme is the same).
  • Jordan Davis, is he going to be as big a deal as it's being presented vs the run, and what can he do in pass situations? If he can collapse the pocket and keep QBs from climbing to get away from Sweat / Reddick I'll be smiling.
  • # of games until CGJ draws a personal foul from an opponent :)
  • BG - before camp I was kind of thinking anything we got from him this year would be a bonus. Is he really going to make a strong contribution this year?

On O:
  • What's their Plan A? I expect them to lean away from the run heaviness of last year but very curious to see their run/pass ratio in neutral situations early in the season.
  • An obvious one, but where do we see Hurts improve this year. The outside the numbers reads are the simplest to make, since defenders only come from one direction. Reading over the middle you have to account for defenders coming from both directions, can he do that? Can he do a better job of catching the alerts vs zone coverage. There are a decent number of clips floating around with Quez and DeVonta open deep and Hurts not seeing it. He's good at taking the deep shots vs man, but as a running QB, he won't see man very often. He needs to be better at converting the opportunities to complete deep balls when they're there.
  • What do we get out of Miles Sanders? After a really promising rookie season, injuries and inconsistency have turned him into a bit of an enigma, but he's still incredibly talented.
  • Can the offensive coaching staff do a better job of focusing on their strengths in the passing game. Please focus on your best players, doing the things they're best at. That's all.
  • 1st down success. Early in the season I remember yelling at the tv at some point "FFS, it's always 2nd and 10." This is on Hurts, but also game planning and play calling. Can they do a better job generating 6+ yard gains on 1st down. Throw some slants to AJ, stick routes to Goedert, hitches or quick outs to Smith. Those are all things those guys do well. 2nd and 2 or 3 opens up a lot of opportunities.

So Dan Orlovsky pointed some stuff out on this during the Florida/Utah game. This convo instantly made me think of Hurts issues here. Anthony Richardson made a few very good over the middle throws. Dan was hyping those plays up not because of the success but how very little playing time ARich has had and how making some of those throws as good as he did over the middle you have to have feel for things as well as timing. He was praising how big this was for such a young QB with his lack of experience to be doing those things was. He also said it's about seeing the play as well as seeing what develops over the middle.

I know I'm confusing something in here but the point I was making is Hurts I don't know if it's a timing or lack of development issue but year 3 of a QB you shouldn't be having issues throwing over the middle of the field and being doing it consistently. He's played long enough from College to pros to know a lot of this. It's just been concerning since last year to me he doesn't see this consistently and misses the open guy.

Also I just want to mention how great of a Color Commentator Dan Orlovsky is for ESPN SEC Saturday Nights. He's a more laid back Tony Romo and will call out plays like Tony but not as consistently. Dude really should be a QB coach somewhere though. Also Dan's wife is from Philly so he's pretty Pro Eagles in his takes when on NFL live but also not afraid of going after faults. He was doing live feedbacks of Hurts playoff performance last year which was pretty cool and understand why this or that worked or didn't work.

I think we come out similar to the ATL opener last season: some signs of rust, but still handle a rebuilding team. 27-13.
Nice, I'd be happy with that. I think Detroit's offense is going to be surprisingly good this year and I think they can hang more than 13 on our Defense that might have the jitters and need a week or so to gel.

Prediction

Eagles - 31
Lions - 20

I think the Lions will start fast but I don't see many more points in the 2nd half for Detriot.

Eagles 27
Lions 14

Lions jump out to a 14-3 lead in the first half but the Eagles right the ship and settle in.

@The Noid Did you run a cool contest last year where we had to guess the team record or something? I know you did the draft one but I thought you did a reg season one too, and it's very generous and cool!

Eagles 27-20 for me.

Keys are pressuring Goff (initial typo was Goof :-)) to turn him from basically competent, to turnover prone and inefficient. On O, run the ball and feed the big 3 in the pass game. If the Eagles play to their strengths and execute, the Lions won't be able to match them

the latest Birds with Friends podcast really dissects Gannon as Def. Coord last year, i recommend the listen.

Analyzing all 53 Eagles players on the 2022 roster

Wow, you guys are stacked. Roseman has done a great job constructing this team. I know everyone is thinking the jury’s still out on whether you have the right QB, but there are no holes, no weaknesses.

This is what Detroit is trying to accomplish. Not sure if Dan Campbell is the right coach, but like everyone I hope he’s successful. I have no doubt about Brad Holmes, though. Two strong drafts, low cost FAs, decent contributions from UDFAs, taking the Dead Cap hits & moving on, in sync with the HC on the vision. Build from the inside out.

Unlike the Eagles, we have major holes. Can’t throw a deep ball and the defense cannot get off the field. Maybe Hutchinson (Edge) and Rodriguez (LB) are difference makers. IDK, still looks like a 5-7 win team to me.

GL rest of season after Sunday. Should win the division and who knows what will happen in the playoffs.

kind of agree about not being able to throw a deep ball, but Lions got a great grab with DJ Chark on the 1 year prove it deal. i think he is still only 25, if he shines, the WRs are pretty stacked there in Detroit if Jameson Williams rehabs his knee well. about 85% of the way to a prolific explosive offense, just need that QB if Goff doesn't all of a sudden change his game

It will help that they have a really good young OC in Ben Johnson. When the Lions put Anthony Lynn on the shelf after 6 games last year, MCDC took over play calling. We found out later that behind the scenes it was the TEs coach who was actually implementing the offense making adjustments on plays. He got promoted and spent the offseason looking at all the 2017-2018 tape to find plays they felt they had the personnel for, and he got a lot of input from Jared. Basically we've given him everything he needs to succeed: scheme, talent, buyin/comfort. If he doesn't then I trust Holmes (GM) judgment on what to do in 2023.

looks like the Eagles are up to their usual shenanigans to assist with cap mgmt. makes sense this year since they have the arrow pointing up and can open up some room if they need to add any pieces:

Eagles restructured OT Lane Johnson's contract.

The Eagles converted $5.88 million of Johnson's base salary into a signing bonus in a move that freed up $6.9 million in cap space for the season. Johnson started 13 regular season games for the Eagles last season, allowing just 10 pressures while not surrendering a sack -- earning Second-team All-Pro honors. Since 2019, Johnson has allowed just two sacks in 32 games. Philly also re-worked the contract of kicker Jake Elliot, converting $2.175 million of his salary to a signing bonus as well.

2022 Eagles Regular Season Prediction Contest is back, with a world-famous menagerie of Eagles swag as the top prize!

Same rules as last season:
  • Using the format below (and my official entry) as a template, indicate these 3 things about the Eagles 2022 season: overall record, total points scored, and the outcome of each game: W/L/T (make sure your Wins and Losses match up with your overall record!)
  • Number of correct W/L outcome predictions by game will be the first tie-breaker if multiple entries have the correct overall record, and total points (closest, over or under) will be the second tie-breaker, if needed.
  • Entries need to be posted in this thread by noon EST on Sunday, September 11th. Open to all FBGs, even Cowboys fans from the Philly area that, deep down like Anakin Skywalker, still have some good in them.
Good luck!

great, thanks for doing this again. 2 quick questions:
1. the total points scored is the total points scored by the Eagles right, not both teams? Looks like you have the Eagles averaging about 22 points a game, which makes some sense :).
2. Total points is simply who is closest, not something like Price is Right rules with not going over, correct?

Yes and yes.

From a Rams story on The Athletic, seems we were pretty deep into getting Allen Robinson before the Rams pivoted in their offseason and made a last-minute run at him. We likely don't make the AJ Brown trade if this didn't happen, so I'm happy with how it turned out:

McVay was nervous about his receiving corps. Beckham, playing on a one-year deal, tore his ACL in the Super Bowl en route to what may have been an MVP performance. The Rams wanted (and still want) to bring Beckham back but knew he couldn’t contribute until November or December. No. 3 receiver Van Jefferson had just undergone the first of two knee procedures. Woods was still recovering from his torn ACL and so was considered by staff as an “unknown” for 2022.

The energy in the room started buzzing as the group turned on film cut-ups of Robinson. Still, the Rams were cautious. They knew they couldn’t offer him more than the framework they had set aside for Kupp. They also figured he had a couple of suitors already. Would he consider them?

Late that Wednesday night, the Rams called Robinson. He was deep in talks with the Eagles, two sources told The Athletic, but the Rams asked him to postpone his final decision long enough to get on a video call with McVay and Stafford. The coach and quarterback showed Robinson clips of Beckham that they had hustled to put together for the occasion showing how the passing offense eventually evolved around him and Kupp.
