I just don't think Miami ever had the chips to make a trade for Dame.

:goodposting: This is the bottom line.
I think if MIA threw everything in - Herro, Jovic, Jaquez, three picks, Robinson - that is a better offer. Maybe
They don't have three picks

Someone said if they changed the protections they could have 3 picks to deal.
Yea they would need to work with OKC to change or eliminate the protections on the 2025 pick they owe them. Currently it is lotto protected in 2025 and unprotected in 2026. Not sure if OKC would play ball without some sort of asset being thrown their way though.
Only way it could work if it became a24 unprotected

So they could have traded have traded 3 picks if the protections were changed. Which is what we all said.
That's not changing protections, that's moving the pick up an entire year. Almost positive it is unprecedented and OKC isn't playing ball without serious considerations. This is MIA blowing smoke everyone's backside because they blew it on the last four big name players that were all forcing their way out (KD, Harden, Beal, Dame) and naming MIA as a possible landing spot.
Not sure of the details but pretty much every major NBA reporter that had previously talked about what Miami had available to trade for Lillard has mentioned that the Heat could open up a third tradeable 1st if they changed the protections on that Pick going to OKC.

Yep. OKC and MIA could have made it so the 2024 pick was unprotected and not top 14 protected. OKC would have to get something from MIA though but a 2nd round pick may have been enough to do that. If MIA had a for sure 2024 obligation then it could have trade 26,28, and 30

So you are arguing semantics. Everyone kept saying there was a way for Miami to add a third pick and you kept arguing they only had two picks to offer. No one cares that Miami blew it.

Right now, the pick to OKC is either 2025 (top 15 protected) or 2026. My understanding is that means Miami can’t trade either 2024 or 2027 so there is no chance of back to back firsts traded.

If Mia/OKC change things so it’s a 2026 pick only (with compensation going to OKC to make it happen), then that frees up Miami to trade their 2024, 2028, and 2030 picks.

They could have (see my post above), but I’m guessing they never got that far in negotiations.

If the could have they would have

You don't know that. Unless you are part of the Heat front office.

TimeLord is a tough loss. They will have to find a replacement of some kind because we can't count on Horford/Porzingis for 82 games + playoffs. Kornet is not the guy either.

You couldn't count on Timelord and Horford for 82 plus the playoffs.
I thought the 3 of them (KP, AH & RW3) would have been enough, but now we are a guy short again.

Good centers have given them fits many years now.

Mazzulla has his work cut out for him. I would have trusted Udoka in year 3 a lot more than Mazzulla in year 2.

There is going to have to be a lot of work done if they are to reach their potential by the playoffs.

Woj says the Blazers plan to keep Williams, but it seems like he might be more valuable in a trade to a contender given that they are pretty committed financially to Ayton. Also curious whether Brogdon is worth anything in a trade at this point. Last random Blazers-related thought: if Steph misses even more time this year or starts to finally start declining (and he does turn 36 this season), that 2024 Warriors pick could be pretty valuable (it's only protected 1-4 as far as I can tell).

Jrue to the Celtics for two firsts, Timelord and Brogdon.

Blazers are killing it.

Why didn't they call back the Heat?
Damn. These MIL/BOS games are gonna be something

Plus you will have Jrue guarding Dame. This needs to be the Eastern conference finals and then we all win.
Who’s guarding Giannis and Brook now?

No one guards either. Giannis is too good and Brook is a clean up guy or wanders out to the 3 point line.

Old man Al Horford has played Giannis pretty well over the years. And Lopez isn’t a guy you worry about covering but Porzingis should do just fine against him.

If Mazzulla can't figure it out with all the talent he's surrounded by, he probably shouldn't be coaching
The goal is a title, not a high seed and ECF appearance.

I believe he's good enough to do the latter, but I'm just not sure if he can coach them to the Championship.
