I commend the nba for actually trying something different but until they attach stakes the fans care about I don’t see why anybody would actually get into this. To each their own though. IMO the final lottery pick should be the carrot, along with the players getting paid.

Well, they put it up against the NFL and NCAA Football in November. Nobody is watching this when sports that matter are on TV. Do this in February when the king is hibernating.
Yea, there’s that also.

The NBA tourney had 7 games on Friday night. There were exactly zero NFL games on Friday night, and the two college football games were 4 unranked teams that nobody really cares about

Do you know what those TV ratings were per game? I'd be curious, but I'd also bet they are LOW.

On NBA TV Thursday night, Spurs-Suns — featuring Victor Wembanyama’s 38-point performance — averaged 580,000 viewers, down 12% from Heat-Warriors last year (658K).

Do you know how many people tuned in to watch Titans/Steelers? 11.5 million.

My argument is a larger one - NBA in November is an afterthought for most sports fans. It may not be for you, but for the average US TV sports viewer, early season NBA basketball isn't important. Speaking personally, my sports attention is on who the Ducks play on Saturday and what my fantasy football roster is looking like heading into Sunday. An in-season NBA tournament in November isn't making my sports' pants tight. Hell, I don't even think many of the players understand what it's all about.
The tournament doesn’t need to be more popular than football to make it successful. It just needs to slightly move the needle on fan interest during the early regular season so the NBA can make this part of its sales pitch on the new media deal.
The first Super Bowl wasn't exactly a smash. Tickets were only $12 then, and there were 62,000 people in attendance (and 15,000 empty seats). I think things turned out ok for the NFL. Not suggesting the NBA in-season tournament will grow by leaps and bounds, but it could develop into something once they figure out what they are doing.

And back then we called them 'talkies', you see. Two pence for an Ovaltine, four for a progrum.

Well, it's not going to be as popular as football. That was never my argument. That's a ludicrous ask. I'm just suggesting if the NBA wanted to draw attention to an in-season tournament, do it when football is in the rearview mirror and not in November when most sports fans are focused on football.

But if this is a sales pitch for a new media deal, maybe this was the best option for timing?
Maybe. Perhaps a small incremental gain in November, when the league really struggles to reach an audience, is more valuable for TV partners than making it a bigger part of the national sports calendar later in the year when people are starting to turn to the NBA anyway.

I think that is what the NBA is trying to solve for, but they botched the marketing if the players don't even know what is going on. The incentive seems so meaningless to them, that it is just another game. And it being so early, teams are still ramping players up from the off-season to even get minutes.
I think there has been one player, Bones Hyland, who has come out and said he doesn’t know what is going on. Every NBA team has minimum players and guys who have not made a bunch of money in their lives. 1/2 million is not nothing for those guys. Also these guys are hyper competitive. I bet when it gets to semis and finals for this thing these dudes are gonna ball
Lillard too.

I'm not a huge soccer fan, but I believe this is how those mid-season tournaments go for them, there are just random games interspersed throughout the early season that leads to a small tournament and a championship of some kind. I believe they are copying the European soccer club format almost exactly.
Those usually go throughout the season and end near the same time the season does. There could be large breaks. The NBA one is basically wrapped up in the first month of the season.

The Thunder are blacked out on League Pass in Kansas City, so dumb. I don’t think it’s possible to get a cable/streaming package that shows their games here. The Nuggets are also blacked out for good measure, so I miss my favorite team and the best team in the league. Death to RSNs. I understand why they won’t show the national tv games on league pass, but this other stuff is nonsense

Yes. I think if you have Directv you can get access to Altitude Sports, which shows their games “locally” and supposedly includes the KC market.

I don’t think you can get the Thunder here regardless. The NBA seems to think the local Bally Sports Station carries their games in KC, but I’m pretty sure they don’t

Wolves are tough.

Celtics really missed Derrick White in this one. Needed his defense to slow down ANT. Horford is a good player, but he was the on ball defender on a lot of buckets in the 4th and OT.

Boston needing to rely on Sam Hauser during important clutch time minutes is ungood.

Brown's shot at the end of regulation was stupid. Game's tied and he shoots a step-back 3 and actually left 0.2 for the Wolves after the rebound.

Happy for Frosti and his Wolves. Two nice wins against the league's best teams.

Houston winning back to back games vs. SAC surprised me as well. 3-3 is about as good of a start as I could expect after getting pummeled by Orlando. Dillon Brooks has been earning that contract. Hope he keeps up the great play.

It’s so bad. Used to get every Thunder game here but Bally ruined it. Can’t wait for the league to begin streaming directly to consumers once these RSNs croak.

I have a fairly reliable streaming site (unlicensed) that I've been using for all NBA games. Just DM me and I'll send you a link.

some may say that it’s too early to panic after 6 games, but I’m out on the Kings after those two games. Just totally embarrassing, G-league level play.

Most awesomest injury ever.

Maxi Kleber (right small toe dislocation) is questionable to play against the Raptors on Wednesday.

Nothing beats the hang nail for pitchers in baseball
They could have at least properly called it the "baby toe" or "pinky toe"
Ummm....I did this once.

It hurts like a mother and every step can be painful for a while.

I kicked a guy's shin under the net playing sand volleyball when I was spiking and he was trying to block it.

Working an early shift today and no games has luckily given me some time to watch/listen to a podcast. I have to say—I’m about 2 hours into this Flagrant podcast with Jason Williams (white chocolate) being the guest—and it’s absolutely amazing. Soo many great NBA stories and the dude is beyond hilarious. Here’s a link in case anybody is interested.

Just to update this post. Just finished the podcast—and I can say that the last 60-90 minutes is beyond hilarious. I legit haven’t laughed so hard for so long for quite a while. Do yourselves a favor and watch this—even if you need to break it down into 20-30 minute sectIons.

A few good games tonight:

Boston @ Philly - top 2 teams in the East. Hoping White is back because they missed him vs the T-Wolves
Spurs @ Knicks - Wemby's Garden debut on ESPN (teams are both around .500, so competitive game?)
Warriors @ Denver - Late game on ESPN, #1 vs #3 in the West. Hope Jokic abuses Draymond.

Excited for this one for sure. White is back playing too.

Side note... Boston is also playing Philly in MLS with the exact same start time. Not like I'm going to watch, but I got excited that the game was televised for a minute there but it was just the MLS game dammit :P

They are better. Maxey is another year improved. Melton is a better defender and isn’t a blackhole on offense. Harris is better at the 4 than 3. Oubre adds scoring.

Probably need some bench scoring though or another scorer that put oubre back to the bench.

We might be better without James.

Definitely. This is why many people in this thread kept saying he wasn't a top 30 player anymore and he wasn't worth any multi year deal worth over 25 million.

Harden should be a 6th man again. That is would be his best spot for him and his team.

Spurs playing like ***, again. I hope all these lineup experiments eventually include moving Wemby to center and inserting Domanick Barlow at PF.

They are young and this is why you wait to add pieces. They are going to be up and down this year and probably next year.

If you want to extend Wembanyama's career and keep him from missing games then he should stay a PF or even a SF. Centers get banged up and even the biggest and strongest centers take a beating. Wemby isn't the biggest or strongest.

I'll settle for Barlow as backup PF. I'm all-in on patience and whatnot, but some of these guys are looking like imposters (Zollins and Branham).

Missed the BOS/PHI game and may be glad.

Tatum and Brown appear to have been ungood on offense based on the box score.

Horford's plus/minus was atrocious as well.
