On no planet in no universe in any league of any sport is CJ McCullom a better player or leader than Brandon Roy. I will die on this hill.
No you’re right. I’d say it’s:

Glide
Walton
Dame
Roy

But I’m no blazers expert.
Was going to post almost exactly this after looking at that list (which is a fan vote thing, btw).

Drexler was a stud for a long, long time but just ran into MJ. He was easily the 2nd best SG of his era.

Walton was Kareem/Wilt/Russell level when healthy. He did deliver a title, won Finals MVP and then MVP the next year. For a brief stint, he was the best player in the world and Portland has had no one else at that level.

Dame has been really good for a long time, but at his best, he was never equal that of the other two above him.

Roy was the man for a short while and CJ would never have been what he became without Dame next to him drawing all the attention.

I don't follow Portland and don't have much memory or knowledge to have an informed opinion on a discussion of their best players. Here are some stats just to bring in some additional players and some added context. (Only counting total numbers for time played in POR).

POINTS SCORED: Lillard, Drexler, Aldridge, Porter, McCollum, Robinson
PPG: Lillard, Vandeweghe, Wicks, Petrie, Drexler, Alridge
PER: Lillard, Walton, Drexler, Sabonis, Nurkic, Aldridge,
VORP: Drexler, Lillard, Porter, Wallace, Aldridge, Sabonis
WIN SHARES: Drexler, Lillard, Porter, Alrdridge, Wallace, Kersey
WS/48: Sabonis, Walton, Lillard, Drexler, Smith, Vandeweghe

I thought you were my missing someone when you said Drexler was the second best shooting guard of his era. He is good, but I don't think of all time great. The shooting guards in the 80's and 90's kind of sucked.

It did seem more of a PG and Bigger Man game. But you still had Joe Dumars, Mitch Richmond, along with Glyde. I know I am missing others.

Yeah I was comparing it with this era. Klay, Harden, Wade, Kobe. They had good players, but only a couple greats.

It was basically MJ, Drexler and then Reggie Miller, Dumars, Richmond in that era. Ray Allen was a rookie in 96-97. Jerry West, George Gervin even Dennis Johnson were done or almost done by the early 90's. Kobe & Wade were the next era as well.

I remember thinking from the all-time NBA drafts that the SG position is very thin when it comes to all-time greats. There just aren't a lot of guys that belong at the top of the overall list despite the GOAT being a SG.

I was actually surprised by Roy's #'s...not as good as I thought they would be...I think Terry Porter is the sleeper in this topic and as far as impact goes Mo Lucas has to be recognized but when I looked at his stats, I forgot he wasn't with Portland that long...if Walton does not get hurt that Blazers team had a chance to be very special...unbelievably cohesive unit and they easily could have won 3 in a row going into the Magic/Bird era.

From link (as voted on):
Clyde Drexler #12 of 130 on The Greatest Shooting Guards in NBA History
Damian Lillard #12 of 42 on
NBA Stars You Should Definitely Follow On IG 🙄

Bill Walton's ceiling was by far the highest of any Blazer (other than Sabonis when he was younger?) and he led Portland to a championship. That's tier 1.

Then I'd put Drexler and Lilliard in tier 2 with Clyde over Dame Time. The Glide was a better overall player due to his overall athleticism, positional versatility, and ability to turn up his defense against anyone not named Michael Jordan.

One of us got a steal by selecting Portland SG Brandon Roy in the 18th round. 😁

Was trying to support your claim, but I do think it backfired. Loved watching Roy play, one of my favorite non-Mavs.

You did, I'm just not all there with all this Dame drama.

Yeah, this is a logical take. People could debate the order of 1/2 and 3/4. But there is no world where 3/4 should leapfrog 1/2.

Not pure basketball related, but I was surprised to learn that the sports section of 538 closed the end of June and all analytics have been discontinued. Apparently, that was due to the fallout of the ABC / ESPN situation. Then in a different situation, the NY Times announced today they are dropping their Sports department. That one is due to them owning The Athletic.

Pistons extend Beef Stew 4/64

**** no!!!

You are not a Beef Stew fan?

He is a 3rd or 4th big on a good team. Those guys don't make 16 million a year.

I think the Pistons are clearly looking at him as a 4. And I reckon - based on the money they are paying him - they think he will be the long term starter there.

He shot 33% from 3 last year on 4 per game. And he's only 22. He averaged 11 points and 8 boards. Seems like a pretty good player with room to grow. Unfortunately I don't know advanced NBA stats very well so can't really comment on those.

4th year is a team option, so it seemed like a pretty reasonable contract to me. It will be an overpay if his shot never comes around, but a huge bargain if it does.
Yeah, I think it’s a good deal too. Have to remember with these high salary numbers being committed to that that cap is expected to be going up 10% a year for the next few years. The cap is now $136m I think, and it’s expected to be above $180m in a few years.

The $16m per year for Stew will basically be equal to (or even less than) the taxpayer mid level in a couple years. Those tend to go to non-starter rotation level players.

Speaking of summer league, was there ever a more stacked summer league roster than the 2017-2018 Lakers? My buddies and I drove to Vegas to watch these guys, it was electric.

Lonzo Ball
Josh Hart
Alex Caruso
Brandon Ingram
Kyle Kuzma
Ivica Zubac
Thomas Bryant
David Nwaba

He should be a bench player worth around 10 million a year. He has been in the league 3 years he may get a little better, but not much. He is a fan favorite and that is about it. You can find players like him in the draft every year and a lot of them later on. Plus why the urgency to extend him right now? They just made him untradable for almost 3 years because no one will want a 16 million dollar bench big until he is expiring.

4th year is a team option.

And I seriously doubt $16 mil/yr makes him untradeable.

I understand the 4th year is a team option, but he is on his old deal this year, so he has 4 more years guaranteed.

16 million absolutely makes him untradable until the year before the team option. No one is going to tie up that cap space for a back up big, unless you take a bad deal back.

Why do it a deal now? He was under contract all year and I am guessing he is restricted free agent next year. Unless he is playing like Dirk during summer workouts and magically no one has heard about it then it is a horrible deal. Especially if you have to extend Cade, Ivey and Duran during in the middle of his deal.

I agree with both sides here. On the one hand, I don't think the money is that bad relative to the where the league is now, but I also agree that there was not really a need to do this now and I have a hard time seeing him getting more than this in RFA, so why give up this flexibility as the Pistons? Besides the fact that Weaver loves his big men and is probably going to keep bringing in more and more to keep the rotation stuffed. Even though Stewart has made some improvements shooting, it's just hard for me to believe that he will get to a good enough place with that to be an effective stretch 4 playing with another big. But I would agree that if he can become a legit stretch 4, then the contract could end up as a decent value.

I am skeptical on the flopping rule. Will they call it on Franz Wagner and Grayson Allen types? I think they will. Are they calling it on LeBron or Chris Paul types? I don't think so.

tf you looping Franz Wagner and Grayson Allen together for?

He has had a couple cheap shots on other players.

Plus they would get called for flopping, there are only about 40ish guys in the league that won't get called and neither of them are on that list.

Yeah, that’s a whole broader issue. It would be awesome to see them consistently apply rules to every player. No star treatment. This will be same old, same old.

I thought it was Mo that was more known for that

I thought it was Franz that had the cheap shot against the Pistons, but I may have the wrong Wagner. If I do my bad.

Supposedly Chet looked incredible again tonight, ROY odds down to +400. It’s happening
I think Wemby and Scoot will put up better overall stats than Chet since they’ll be the focal points for their teams. Chet is a long shot to me since his team is more complete.

The Kings number feels really low. I am not sure they will ever be a good playoff team, but they seem like they are always going to be a good regular season team.
