While that is probably true for this year, it isn't going forward. Harden is declining and I forget if it was Kev or Moops or whoever went through the 76ers cap situation and if they let Harden walk or only got back expiring deals they would have a good amount of money to spend going into next off-season.
They'll be at $76m with just Embid, Tucker and three players from the island of misfit toys on the roster. Not exactly a FA destination.

So they will have at least 60 million dollars to try to lure guys to play with Embiid before hitting the first threshold. Sounds pretty good. Plus we all know there will be a team looking to trade a disgruntled star or dump salary and giving up picks to do so or try to resign Harden to keep him happy.

Doesn't seem like a tough choice.
And we know Philly loves to trade for those disgruntled stars.

Just a clarification. They will likely be acting as a cap space team, so they will have 60-70 million to the salary cap, not the first luxury tax threshold.

If I am reading it correctly and it is the NBA salary cap so there is a very good chance I am not. The cap is 137ish million this year, they only have 70 something million on the books for next year and I don't think the cap goes down. The first threshold is after 137 million.

The cap is likely to be around 142 million next year. Generally thresholds are when you are talking about the luxury tax, which will be at roughly 172 million. Problem with clearing cap space is you are then hardcapped at the 142 million. So they will "only" have 60-70 million to fill out the entire roster

We'll see. Sixty million is one max contract and change. They probably make a run at Siakim. Then you gotta hope guys get guys for value to win a title with Tucker, Siakim, and an oft injured Embid. Not saying it can't

That's also not counting cap holds for guys they might want to retain. Big one being Harris at $45.8M My guess is they will blow thru the soft cap with the Maxey signing ($13.2M cap hold)

I didn't see any comments about Luka getting ejected. Surprised no one commented on that. He and his coach and teammates all defended it by basically saying Canada played him very physically and he was upset at not getting more foul calls. Basically seems like how he handles himself in every NBA game, but NBA officials are apparently less willing to call that second technical and eject him than FIBA officials.

I thought it was great. NBA should take the same stance.

I was shocked to see him playing again today in a consolation game that at best could get them 5th place. How were the Mavs ok with that? Meaningless.

I agree completely that the NBA should be much less tolerant of players whining, complaining, and showing up the refs. If I was commissioner, I'd make it a point of emphasis going into the season and toss out players with accompanying fines until they got the message and adjusted their behavior, and I wouldn't tolerate any backsliding on it, either.

He is going to be playing basketball anyway. It's not as if these guys just hibernate for the summer until training camp

And I think some of these consolation games have an impact on Olympic qualifying (not sure this one did).

EU only gets two automatic qualifiers from the WC and those go to Serbia and Germany as their top two finishers. Slovenia will have to qualify next Summer.

Yea there is a tournament next summer for them but they already qualified for that. Maybe it affects the pots they get put in but still that’s no reason for him to play.

He’s been playing intense international ball for 5 weeks now.
These guys play basketball regardless of whatever competitions are going on. If he wasn't half assing it in a 5th place game he would be doing similar stuff elsewhere

This team gives up an embarrassing amount of "ball watching" offensive rebounds to guys flying in untouched from the outside.

Get a freaking body on someone.

Yes but it would help if they had any bigs at all. Rebounding is the only thing this team struggles with.

Neither team missed much in the first t half. Germany had nine total rebounds
Currently 10-4 offensive rebounds for Germany. Both teams shooting well. Pretty much the difference in the game.

Oh wow just turned on the USA game. Stayed up late to watch the first semi. Assumed USA would be up by 40 points now.

I know he's been the guy so far....but I hate that 3 from Edwards. Go to the rim and draw a foul. Germany was scrambling back.

It's crazy these European teams do so well when their best player might not even make the roster of the usa/canada. I guess they've played together more and are more used to this style of basketball.

USA vs Canada should just be talent vs talent in an NBA style game, so USA should dominate that I'd think.

Why would you expect us to win this game by 40?
Somebody project the Olympic team please. Make sure Brunson isn’t on it.
For the Olympics, wouldn't all the superstars want to play? Throw Steph, etc on that team and no one would come close.
Steph, KD, Lebron may be too old and not want to do it. As for guys who weren’t here who are likely to go, I guess Booker is the best player? But then Serbia will be adding Joker to a team that is in the finals as well.
