The Cade talk reminded me of how poorly the 2021 draft class has fared relative to expectations. At the time, that class was drawing comparisons to all-time great drafts like ‘84 or ‘96. I’m sure some guys will emerge, but so far the top of the 2021 draft looks pretty weak. Several good players but no great ones yet.
On the other hand, the 2020 class was universally panned as a “bad draft,” but now it’s looking like one of the best of the decade. Four bonafide stars in Edwards, Lamelo, Haliburton, and Maxey, and some very high-end starters like Bane and McDaniels. Player development is hard to predict, and our ability to assess draft classes seems pretty bad.
