The Cade talk reminded me of how poorly the 2021 draft class has fared relative to expectations. At the time, that class was drawing comparisons to all-time great drafts like ‘84 or ‘96. I’m sure some guys will emerge, but so far the top of the 2021 draft looks pretty weak. Several good players but no great ones yet.

On the other hand, the 2020 class was universally panned as a “bad draft,” but now it’s looking like one of the best of the decade. Four bonafide stars in Edwards, Lamelo, Haliburton, and Maxey, and some very high-end starters like Bane and McDaniels. Player development is hard to predict, and our ability to assess draft classes seems pretty bad.

You’re right about 2020 on all fronts but I don’t recall anyone being nearly that high on the 21 draft.

It’s possible that I just pay too much attention to twitter discourse - but I definitely remember a lot of takes like this from NBA media heads in 2021. Hollinger wasn’t as high on that class pre-draft, but by the end of the season was comparing it to ‘96. Even though people weren't out of their minds about Cade, everyone seemed to REALLY love the top 5-6 as a whole.

Are you guys ready for a mid-numbing amount of flashback footage during this year's finals, since the two teams that will be playing came into the league in the same year?

It is starting to feel like a slight not including Bane in that first group. That dude can play

Holy ****. This IND/ATL game. 155 - 152 in regulation with 30 seconds to go!!
Every Pacers game is like watching the All Star game because there is zero defense and all offense every night with them. Super fun to watch because they play with tempo and launch a ton of threes. But totally doomed if the make the playoffs as they seem to be allergic to the concept of defense.

Yeah, it really didn’t feel right including him in either group. If I was re-ranking the 2020 class I’d have him in a tier of his own. Wouldn’t quite put him on the same level as the top 4 (partially due to age), but he’s easily better than everyone else.

basketball reference VORP has it Haliburton, Ball, Bane, Edwards, Quickley, Maxey - in that order, with Haliburton a clear step above so far in their career.

Watched my first nba game of the season tonight for various reasons. It was the CLE/PHILLY game.

Two things:

1. What’s up with the floor? I noticed other venues are similar.

2. I have no idea what this in season tournament is???

Seriously though, the In Season Tournament thread has the rules and setup in it.

I’ve got all the standings and remaining games updated through tonight’s games.

That 2021 draft has been fairly disappointing. Udoka benched Jalen Green last night. I don't think he'll ever be top tier talent. Great for some flashy dunks and high scoring games but needs to do more than just score. I'm just glad the Rockets made up for that blunder by drafting which looks like best player of the draft at #16. Sengun is pretty damn good and going to be great.

Folks I regret to inform you that the Magic are good.
taps the sign
Their lack of shooting is going to catch up to them at some point though. 28th in league with 33% 3P
League best defense will take you places (the 5th seed tops). And they’re missing 2 starters.
It's almost like Franz Wagner is a good defender.
Almost
Of players that play more than 25 mpg (most starters), he is #1 in defensive rating for the season at 102.5.

I only watched their first game of the season but man they looked good. Nice balance to the team. The thing I like about great defense is that it's consistent and keeps them in games. Once they get a stud marksmen, they could be a contender. Even more amazing is that they're doing all of this without Bol Bol.

I want to start by saying I LOVE Popovich. Guy is a gem of a human by all accounts and his heart was in the right place here.

However, these guys are made millionaires for playing and coaching a game I PAY to watch and play every chance I get. I wouldn't be one of the guys booing Kawhi, but if I was, Pops insistence that I stop would mean nothing to me. I get paid one bazillionth of what they do per game to ref HS games and I get booed all the time.

Kawhi can suck it up and deal.

Makes sense if the goal was to make the fans boo even louder.
Yeah—I’m with you on this. I think Pop is great—but I wasn’t a fan of this decision or action. The timing and execution of it seemed odd. The announcer for the arena could have made a statement if the booing was truly horrible. I do feel like his intentions were good and pure—but there is something that kinda had facets of virtue signaling in it. Lastly, your point is exactly accurate. That statement resulted in more boos than it eradicated.

Some Wander Franco-esque allegations floating around Josh Giddey this morning. :sadbanana: That may put a bit of a damper on OKC’s breakout season.

Yeah—if true—definitely troubling stuff. It’s weird how Giddey had a reputation of being the only virgin in the NBA not long ago—and now there are these allegations floating around. For everybody’s sake—hopefully they aren’t true.

I think the age of consent in Australia is 16. How old is she? sophomore in HS so could be.

The age of consent in Oklahoma is also 16 so he may be in the clear legally but the PR hit is going to be massive.
I don’t think she’s from Oklahoma. I believe she’s from Newport Harbor High School—which is in Southern California (my nephew graduated from there). I believe Giddey did train in Southern California for a while either this past off season or the one before that—so there might be a connection there.

Boston-Orlando a surprisingly intriguing early-season matchup between Orlando's strong start and being a key game in the IST.

This Orlando court might be my favorite or any. Simple and doesn't distract from the play but the runner and the center-court logo really pop.
