The Lakers played their assess off on D - that had a lot to do with the tough time the Pacers had shooting/scoring. I enjoyed watching that. On the other end, the Lakers are terrible at hitting open 3's, no surprise there. Until the Lakers come up with somebody who can knock down open 3's at a respectable percentage, they're not legit championship contenders
Was curious so I looked up their open three percentages

Lebron is at 58.3%
Rui 47.8%
Russell 46.2%
Reaves 37.5%

Obviously Lebron's # is sick, and Rui and Russell is good, but otherwise, yea - they can't seem to hit open threes

WNBA draft lottery is on. Can't miss TV right there
I was bummed LA missed out on Caitlin Clark and the #1 pick, but jumping up to #2 and Paige Beuckers isn’t a bad consolation prize.

You don't think they take Cameron Brink? I mean.....she's got LA written all over her.
Yeah, saw she was listed by ESPN as a top potential option. I was thinking Sparks would go after one of the biggest names. Clark and Beuckers have bigger followings and name recognition than anyone on the men’s college side (maybe Bronny is close).

This is a terrific draft class. Think I saw a mock with Angela Reese around #10 or so? That is a DEEP class of potential stars for her to be that far down....

Yes, I should have said "except LeBron." They need someone who can knock them down at a high rate when the defenses leave them alone to collapse on LeBron and Davis. Rui hasn't played a ton this year, so I don't know if his % will hold up as his volume increases. Russell seems like he's super streaky - I don't have the numbers to back that up - game to game it feels like you just don't know what you'll get from him.

Yeah, WNBA needs to expand big time. The names of the really good players that get cut each year because there just aren’t enough roster spots is just ridiculous.

I'm thinking Moops is looking at this.

If that's the case, Rui comes in at about number 130 to 140 on the list. Granted, a lot of guys on the list are getting significantly less than 1 open look per game. I.e. having your second best guy shooting 47.8% on open 3's isn't that great.

Sadly, I have no idea how many teams there even are right now. 16?

I'd love Portland to get one. The Portland Thorns are a huge draw here and I would bet WNBA could do quite well as there's very little else going on for Portland. If they could get a homegrown star like Brink, she'd be an enormous draw. Sabrina Ionescu is a rock star in Oregon.

I’ll have to see if I can find some of the studies, but I’m pretty sure their viewership and attendance is way up over the past few years and still growing.

Certainly not suggesting that the WNBA is wildly popular, but it is increasing in TV ratings and attendance. I do think players like Caitlin Clark will further increase the popularity of the sport as will the growing interest in the NCAA Women's Tournament. Unlike the Men's tournament where there are virtually no stars anymore - at least, very few recognizable stars. The best men's players are at an academy or in the G-League or overseas.....NCAA Women have some bona fide stars and that's going to help the WNBA grow in popularity too once they get there.

NEW YORK -- The WNBA once again had strong metrics this year as the league had its most-watched regular season in 21 years and its highest average attendance since 2018.

Viewership was up 21% over last year across its national television partners, and the league's average attendance of 6,615 fans was the WNBA's highest since the 2018 season. An expanded schedule to 40 games this season helped the league gain its highest total attendance in 13 years at 1,587,488.

"The significant rise in key business metrics is a testament to the captivating games being played and the WNBA's expanding appeal," WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said. "This surge in interest not only showcases the immense talent and athleticism on the court but also highlights the compelling narratives that continue to emerge about the players and the league."

Let's also not forget that professional basketball used to be impossible to find on TV and was not popular at all until the 80s.

It's not about demand. It's if the NBA wants to keep on subsidizing a league that virtually no one cares about.

I’m sure this isn’t the right thread/forum to try to convince anyone to start watching or liking the WNBA and I’m not going to regardless. The “no one cares” and “no demand” comments are way off though. It’s never going to compete with the NBA, but the league is finally getting more of a platform and is growing accordingly. That growth is why I mentioned I think expansion is needed. There’s definitely a market and an appetite for the WNBA out there.

It's been a couple years since I was in on all the financials, but the WNBA through at least 2020 was a MASSIVE financial loss for the NBA. It's basically a $100M+ charity write off.

Which has nothing to do with the talented players, professional product, etc. It's just a reality.

I just look at the numbers and the paltry attendance at these games. It's a real shame that Houston had the first dynasty in the WNBA, a successful franchise and even they couldn't find someone to pony up the cash to keep the team afloat. Hopefully the NBA has figured out a way to make this work but without them it would cease to exist.

It's more or less an advertising expense so that young women/girls are more likely to like basketball and become eventual NBA fans.

Pretty much dominated the best team in the West last night. :coffee: The difference? Zion wasn't playing like he was scared like he was against Lebron in the tourney semi. Watched back some of the gameplay of that tourney game and Zion was not playing the same style as he has the rest of the games this season. IDK if it was just the playoff moment too big for him, intimidated against Lebron, or what exactly, but it was clear he was playing timidly. Hopefully he learns from that for the next big moment game. And Stephen A. still saying Zion is fat apparently? :lmao: I know all that won't go away until he plays a full season tho.

honest question, is the WNBA turning a profit yet?

i feel like a couple years ago i read an article that said the league was massively subsidized by the NBA, or they would have folded by now. is the WNBA standing on its own yet?

@Instinctive asked the question already :bag:

When do you think Nola gives up and finally decide to trade him? pretty sure the wheels are in motion behind the scenes so they can extract some value. So much potential but doesn't seem to care enough to improve his game and/or stay in shape.

True, but when they beat us before, two of our best 3 weren't playing so.... WIns are wins. There are probably at least one star player per game out on average these days in the NBA.

His game has Improved a bit this year, IMO. He's not always super aggressive go to the rim every single play. He's picking his spots better, and even has a little bit of mid-range game (still needs improvement). Defense is where he needs the most work, IMO. The out of shape stuff is old and tired and media driven. He's in shape. He has been in shape for the last year. I mean, maybe not Lebron shape, and always room for improvement, but he's not out of shape. He's played back-to-backs, increased minutes, etc. since the beginning of the season. The dude is just a huge human being. I guess the media (not directed at you GB) wants him to look like Kevin Durant? lol All that said, it depends on his durability. He MUST finish a season to retain any value IMO. But there's no doubt, when he's on the floor, our team is better. Just the attention he draws allows the offense to open up. You can tell just from watching minutes he's on the bench vs when he's on the floor. I don't think they are looking to trade him at all. I've heard nothing from team reporters. He's happy in Nola. He loves the team. He respects his coaches and teammates. He wants to win. He's a young kid and he's learning to grow up a little but, health concerns aside, I like the direction the team is heading with him on it.

Sixers blowing people out of late. I know it is weak teams, but that is what you’re supposed to do and what they haven’t done in years.
However they are only 6-4 in their last 10 games.

They look better in their losses though too, if that makes sense. They probably need one more piece, but this team has bought in much more than past teams. Some guys wasting away on the bench that could contribute though, or be pieces in a future deal.

Agreed. Their losses on the year are to BOS, MIL, IND, CLE, NOP, AND MIN. Teams that are collectively 88-46

He might be "in shape" in that he's not fat but I think it's fair to say he's carrying too much weight/muscle mass to be a durable wing player and it'd be hard to argue the other side of that point given his career so far.

Zion was awesome last night.

Beginning with last night the Wolves have 16 in a row against teams with winnings records with 11 of those on the road and several back-to-backs involved. Really going to test this team. Got Jaden back finally, need Ant back. I'm excited to see what they can do in this stretch.

Draymond should get a 25 game suspension at this point. And the Warriors should be thrilled about it because he sucks and it will save them a ton of luxury tax.

Seriously...what the hell was that punch? :lmao:
