Recognizing that was probably Ellis's best game of his career to date, he looks like a huge upgrade on Huerter for this team. He looked to be one of those rare defenders that is as effective on ball as he is off ball plus he actually brings the 3 to 3 and D.

They are in kind of a tough place this offseason. The team as constructed is obviously nothing more than a bottom tier playoff team in the west - behind them in the standing this year, Memphis will certainly be better next year, the Rockets are on the rise, Wemby could lead to a quick rebuild in San Antonio. They won't have the ability to easily reload either, because even without Thompson and Paul's salaries, they don't have real cap space. And next offseason, Kuminga and possibly Moody are going to get paid.

If I were them, I would initially take a look at a reshuffling to bring more athleticism and defense around Green and Curry (while keeping Pods and Kuminga, maybe Moody). See what a sign and trade for Miles Bridges would cost, see if Bruce Brown is going to get more than the mid-level, how much do the Bulls want to keep Patrick Williams, is Dallas going to give Derrick Jones Jr more than the mid-level. Grab a couple other dudes on the cheap that either provide shooting or defense (Dennis Smith Jr, Haywood Highsmith, Josh Okogie, Gary Harris, Bol Bol, KJ Martin).

If they can't really find a way to bring in some more athleticism, run it back and at least the fans love all those old dudes that won them titles.

In today's NBA, aren't teams a lot more willing to hand out crazy contracts, as teams will need high dollar contracts for salary matching in trades? Didn't they eliminate the ability to trade multiple player contracts for one player? Meaning, you can't trade three $15M contracts for a $45M contract anymore?

That's a restriction for teams over a certain luxury tax threshold, but the Warriors are going to cut enough salary this offseason that they won't be in that range any longer. And they'll still have Wiggins, maybe Payton and Looney too if they need bad salary to send out in a trade.

If he was still a passable defender at the 2/3, I think he would be worth it to somebody because he is still a great shooter, last night notwithstanding. But he's probably a slight negative on that end against primary ball handler types and he has never been an especially positive defender off-ball. He's still a better off-ball offensive player than most of the other shooting specialists because of his ability to hit shots off the move, but he's worse off the dribble than many of them. I think he's on the same tier as guys like Buddy Hield, Duncan Robinson, Grayson Allen, or Malik Beasley, but on a steeper decline going forward.

I went as far back as the 1980 draft, and the 2000 draft class was the most barren of deserts. The only player to eclipse a career VORP score of 20 was Michael Redd at 21.4. The 1980 draft class wasn't much better, as the only player with a career VORP score over 20 was Kevin McHale at 34.3. For those that were wondering, the draft with the most players with scores of 20+ in that span was the 1999 class with 10 players. To give a little perspective, there's been 239 players with scores of 20+ since they started tracking it in the 73-74 season. Since 1980, there was a tie for second with 7 players in a class of 20+ . . . 2001 and 1987. It's harder to gage the recent drafts, as it takes a while to accrue VORP points.

That draft still did a decent job of making rotation players beyond the lottery - Hedo Turkoglu, Michael Redd, Mo Peterson, Quintin Richardson, Jamaal Magloire (he made an All-Star game! maybe the worst AS this century though), Eduardo Najera (best Mexican NBAer of all time), Desmond Mason... If you were drafting past 15 or whatever, those all would have been decent lands, with Turkoglu and Redd being legitimate high end starters.

Side note - those 00s Magic teams were so fun and ahead of their time. Four legit shooters around the best defender in the NBA. Transplanting their 08-09 team that made the finals to 2024 would be a trip - that team had Howard, Lewis, Turkoglu, Nelson, Courtney Lee, Reddick, Pietrus, Gortat, Rafer Alston... The PGs are a little small, but otherwise that is a sick modern team.
