Wait, Sam Hartman isn't playing in this because he wanted to focus on the NFL? Seriously?
Also after he told Freeman and the team that he was going to play. The Hartman era at ND ended with a thud and Freeman was not happy at his presser.
Most here probably don't pay attention to NC State, but they had a QB situation this season that highlights this new era of player decision-making.
They opened the season with incoming 6th year transfer Brennan Armstrong as QB1 and true sophomore MJ Morris as QB2. The team opened 3-1, but the offense was not performing well. In game 5, State lost to Louisville 10-13, with just 201 yards on offense. Armstrong passed for just 112 yards and 0 TDs with 2 interceptions and a lost fumble. Morris was named the starter for game 6.
Morris started games 6-9. State went 3-1 and beat Clemson and Miami back to back in games 8-9. The team was 6-3 and had some momentum. Having played in 4 games, if Morris played in another, he would be unable to redshirt. He went to the head coach and said he was pulling himself from playing the rest of the season to preserve the year of eligibility. The coaching staff seemed stunned. I know fans were stunned. I assume his teammates were stunned, and a lot of them presumably felt like he quit on them.
Meanwhile, Armstrong had handled his benching well, continuing to be a leader in the locker room and getting a handful of plays in specific packages over that stretch. He became the starter again, and helped the team to 3 wins to close out the season, culminating in a beatdown of rival UNC. He also started the bowl game, which NC State lost to Kansas State. By that time, Morris had entered the portal, ultimately transferring to Maryland.
We aren't talking about sitting out the Pop Tart bowl here. Morris willingly pulled himself from the starting QB role midseason. The only reason I can see for him to do this is to maximize another year of NIL earnings, since he doesn't seem good enough to play in the NFL.
