Well that was certainly a fun way to finish after an up and down season. I’m most thankful that the team looked ready and motivated to play. ND has had a fog over bowl games and preparations forever, so playing well end to end was a welcome sight.

Next year’s schedule is very forgiving after a week 1 away game at College Station. Denbrock is back, hopefully learned a lot since his last stint, and this team looks poised to make the playoffs next year and then you never know.

Apropos of nothing, I would like to have my photo taken with Tony the Tiger.

I learned yesterday that the original voice of Tony the Tiger was done by the same man who sang the song "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch". Thurl Ravenscroft.

thought for sure Bailey, was the only Thurl on earth. learn something new every day.

A lot of past generation's names are being used today. Oddly, "Thurl" hasn't been one of them.

I’m usually one to not pick my own team, but ND has little excuse. Yes, like most teams, we’re missing some key pieces (Hartman, Estime), but the majority of our top 10 defense is playing.

Oregon State has been gashed by the PAC12 fallout and their coach leaving. Even Damien Martinez is now doubtful to play. Yes the Irish start Angeli and have guys like Alt out, but the backup OL looked solid and they still have Love and Price to run back there. I’d bet you see one of the WRs step up, a TE like Raridon shines as well, but Love shows why he was a top recruit as the defense gives them good position most of the day.
Thanks my friend!! If there is 1 homer assessment I’ll bet on…it’s yours.

Wait, Sam Hartman isn't playing in this because he wanted to focus on the NFL? Seriously?
Also after he told Freeman and the team that he was going to play. The Hartman era at ND ended with a thud and Freeman was not happy at his presser.

Most here probably don't pay attention to NC State, but they had a QB situation this season that highlights this new era of player decision-making.

They opened the season with incoming 6th year transfer Brennan Armstrong as QB1 and true sophomore MJ Morris as QB2. The team opened 3-1, but the offense was not performing well. In game 5, State lost to Louisville 10-13, with just 201 yards on offense. Armstrong passed for just 112 yards and 0 TDs with 2 interceptions and a lost fumble. Morris was named the starter for game 6.

Morris started games 6-9. State went 3-1 and beat Clemson and Miami back to back in games 8-9. The team was 6-3 and had some momentum. Having played in 4 games, if Morris played in another, he would be unable to redshirt. He went to the head coach and said he was pulling himself from playing the rest of the season to preserve the year of eligibility. The coaching staff seemed stunned. I know fans were stunned. I assume his teammates were stunned, and a lot of them presumably felt like he quit on them.

Meanwhile, Armstrong had handled his benching well, continuing to be a leader in the locker room and getting a handful of plays in specific packages over that stretch. He became the starter again, and helped the team to 3 wins to close out the season, culminating in a beatdown of rival UNC. He also started the bowl game, which NC State lost to Kansas State. By that time, Morris had entered the portal, ultimately transferring to Maryland.

We aren't talking about sitting out the Pop Tart bowl here. Morris willingly pulled himself from the starting QB role midseason. The only reason I can see for him to do this is to maximize another year of NIL earnings, since he doesn't seem good enough to play in the NFL.

And ND boosters paid him NIL money. Can’t believe that’s not tied into playing the bowl game.
Ehh. Short of the playoffs, the bowls are just like an early spring game scrimmage now with NIL/NFL stakes. It’s actually better for the team that the players get some audition game film whether they’re staying or going.

The real question for me is what he’d have done in a 12 team playoff year if we were in. That fun starts next year and I’m sure some top picks on the teams in that 10-12 range of really unlikely to win the title might opt out.

They always were.

I would be legitimately surprised if this doesn’t start happening more.
Was there an indication he wasn’t going to be the starter next year if he stayed?

So......

How is Miami U fan feeling about the Cristobal era so far? Are there any Hurricane fans on this website?

Is it just a matter of getting his guys in place and patience required or are is there some worry and concern there?

Mizzou v. tOSU up next. This may be a competitive game.

So far this might be the worst, most uninspired game I've ever seen in my life. This is 2008 Sun Bowl bad.
Not watching. Switched to watching the Great Lakes Invitational hockey tournament championship game at kickoff. Helluva battle.

3-0 and Ryan Day just started playing QB for Ohio State. There's been about 17 minutes of footage watching an Ohio State player riding an exercise bike. Do you like punts? Great game for punting enthusiasts.

There is an old creepy man filming the Ohio Stare player riding the exercise bike now. This is the worst thing I've ever watched on television.

:lmao:

Watching this game tonight make me realize how recruiting the talent is way more important than the actual HC. There are a lot of good coaches out there at all levels but when a couple of players are not playing at the "BIG" schools they don`t look so good. Probably why college coaches tend to fail in the NFL.

Ryan Day seems like a weasel, always sounds like he is ready to cry, and the Mizzu HC has trouble controlling his players. What a crappy game.

McCord is somewhere in NY state smiling. Man was he the scapegoat of an atrocious offense. Henderson is a talent, but with no QB the entire offense looks like eunuchs.

No clear indication. No one on the roster, no incoming highly rated freshman QB. It was seemingly his job if he didn't play terrible to finish the season.

You know bowl season has lost a lot of oomph when I don't know until today that OU played our game (against Arizona?) and lost,

I'm pretty sure this says more about you than CFB as a whole.
Yea I mean if you don’t know when your own team plays you’ve kinda just checked out.
That's the point. A formerly rabid fan and now I no longer seem that invested...and I still love and follow the other sports I've always followed (including CFB more or less up until the point OU is eliminated from the playoff!). So clearly something has changed. YMMV.

It should have been rather clear prior to this game that McCord wasn't the problem, but if not, there's no denying it now. The defense is soft, especially on the back end. I don't expect Day to turn this around either. Something going to give sooner or later.

I thought their defense was hard hitting and awesome last night. Didn’t they only allow like 10 a game this year? I was super impressed with their defense.

It’s ok if it’s not longer for you. Despite posting in this thread all the time my interest in CFB is probably half of what it was 10 years ago. And then this year happened for fsu which was exciting and a huge ball kick all at once. I think if you realize the whole sport is a sham and enjoy the stupid parts of it and the pageantry of the stadiums etc it makes it better.

Their front did a significantly better job this year than last. The back end, not so much unless it was in support of run defense. It was very puzzling why Missouri didn't go to the air sooner.

no truer words can be spoken with regard to CFB. my problem is, the stupid parts are REALLY stupid and hard for me to get past.

Yea. But it’s always been stupid. For decades we had idiot writers without full access to television voting on titles. Every hillbilly southern school would claim a share of one for 50 years. Then we had the BCS which was probably the best method of deciding teams but they only allowed two teams in. Now they have a moronic committee headed by some piggly wiggly guy named Boo making decisions based off of theoretical situations. It’s always been a sham, just nobody cared as much.
